Mahindra looks to use its EV playbook to strengthen foray into electric bus space via SML Isuzu acquisition

Mint29-04-2025

Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd is looking to borrow from its electric vehicle playbook to strengthen its foray into the electric bus market by acquiring commercial vehicle player SML Isuzu Ltd.
The Chandigarh-based truck and bus manufacturer introduced the Hiroi.ev platform for developing electric buses in January at the Bharat Mobility Expo. The new e-bus portfolio was slated to be launched between April and June.
'SML is in advanced stages of developing its electric buses. We believe that the expertise we have through presence in multiple EV segments can strengthen the proposition and improve costs," Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director and chief executive officer (CEO), auto and farm sector, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, told reporters at a briefing on Monday.
Mahindra is present in the electric passenger vehicle and three-wheeler segments. The entry into the electric bus space will see it compete with
Tata Motors
Ltd,
Ashok Leyland
Ltd,
JBM Auto
Ltd and
Olectra Greentech
Ltd.
Mumbai-based Mahindra's entry into the electric bus space would come when the e-bus segment's growth has hit some speed bumps. In FY2025, e-bus sales in the country fell 6% to 3,314 units.
However, Mahindra's entry into the space through SML and buoyant commentary by major players present in the segments suggest that hopes are high for the segment to grow.
'The EV bus market in India is doing exceptionally well. Switch India is likely to achieve Ebitda breakeven in FY25, and is hoping to treble volumes in FY26, on the back of 1,800+ e-bus orders in hand," Shenu Agarwal, managing director and CEO at Ashok Leyland, said after the announcement of discussions to withdraw from the UK's electric bus market.

The Mahindra group's foray into the electric bus space is part of its broader strategy to strengthen its position in the higher than 3.5-tonne commercial vehicle space. As part of this strategy, it acquired SML Isuzu for

555 crore to increase its market share in the trucks and bus segment to 10-12% by FY2031 from 3% in FY2025.
Through this acquisition, the company's market share in the light commercial vehicle bus segment has increased to 21% from 5%.
In the less than 3.5-tonne vehicle segment or small commercial vehicle space, Mahindra has a more than 52% market share.
'We expect the bus segment to grow with time as there is going to be a greater movement of people as the economy grows," Jejurikar said.

In FY2025, SML Isuzu sold more than 12,000 buses and trucks, as per Vahan data. Between October and December, the company's net profit had fallen 80.2% to

53 lakh.
'Post these two combined segments, we will become the 4th largest player in the trucks and buses segment. We see a lot of opportunities around cost, platform synergy, network and supplier synergy," Jejurikar said.
Industry observers remain bullish about the prospects of the two players.
"The collaboration between Mahindra Buses and SML Buses can help develop more affordable and reliable electric buses. The two can leverage shared technology, which can increase the range and operational efficiency," Sanyam Gandhi, whole-time director at Chartered Speed, said.
Mahindra's share price ended 2.3% higher on Monday, while SML Isuzu's share closed 10% below its previous closing price, against a 1.6% surge in Nifty Auto.

Lumpsum vs SIP: Is caution killing the case for lumpsum?

With mutual fund SIP inflows reaching record highs in May amid a market rally, a key question arises: Why are investors moving away from lumpsum investments? An expert explains that geopolitical tensions, trade concerns, and fears of a global slowdown—along with muted earnings and valuation worries—have made investors more cautious about lumpsum investing. 'A combination of geopolitical uncertainty, trade wars, and fears of a global slowdown have made investors less confident about investing in lumpsums and more inclined towards SIPs in the current environment. Additionally, the slowdown in corporate earnings and concerns over the valuations of mid- and small-cap stocks are pushing investors to prefer SIPs as their investment strategy,' said Vishal Dhawan, CEO of Plan Ahead Wealth Advisors, a Mumbai-based wealth management firm, in a conversation with ETMutualFunds. In the current financial year so far, total SIP contributions by investors stand at approximately Rs 53,320 crore. For the calendar year to date, total SIP contributions have reached nearly Rs 1.31 lakh crore, up from Rs 98,571 crore during the same period last year. Live Events The benchmark indices—Nifty50 and BSE Sensex—are down about 4% from their 52-week highs. With markets hovering near record levels, is the fear of buying at the peak discouraging lumpsum investments? Addressing the trend, Dhawan noted that investors often anchor to index highs, and their past experience of corrections from those levels tends to impact their willingness to invest in lumpsums. According to the latest monthly data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India ( AMFI ), equity mutual funds witnessed a 22% drop in monthly inflows, receiving Rs 19,013 crore in May compared to Rs 24,269 crore in April. Debt mutual funds saw an outflow of Rs 15,908 crore in May, a sharp reversal from the inflow of Rs 2.19 lakh crore in April. Meanwhile, hybrid mutual funds attracted higher inflows than equity mutual funds in May, with inflows rising 46% to Rs 20,765 crore from Rs 14,247 crore in April. Overall mutual fund inflows dropped by 89% in May. However, total assets under management (AUM) grew 3%, rising to Rs 71.93 lakh crore in May from Rs 69.73 lakh crore in April.

INDA & EDANA approve formation of Global Nonwoven Alliance

The Boards of Directors of INDA and EDANA have officially approved the formation of the Global Nonwoven Alliance (GNA) and have concurrently agreed to become its founding members. Both Boards have also approved a motion authorizing each organization to appoint six representatives from each founding organization – current chair and 5 additional representatives. INDA and EDANA have officially formed the Global Nonwoven Alliance (GNA), each appointing six board members. GNA, a US-based non-profit, will unify global efforts to boost innovation, efficiency, and growth in the nonwovens industry. Both groups remain independent but will align leadership and programmes to address global challenges collaboratively. This move marks a major milestone in the collaborative vision outlined in the organizations' jointly signed Letter of Intent from September 2024. The Board votes follow extensive planning and consultation and includes the recommendation to formally establish GNA as a non-profit association under the laws of the United States. By aligning strategic resources and deepening collaboration, the GNA will provide a unified and coordinated approach to the key opportunities and challenges facing the global nonwovens industry. The Alliance is designed to accelerate innovation, improve operational efficiency, expand international reach, and foster long-term industry growth—all while strengthening the services and support delivered to members at both regional and global levels. Under the GNA framework, INDA and EDANA will continue to operate as independent legal entities, maintaining their regional focus and advocacy efforts. As founding members, however, both organizations will participate in aligning leadership, staffing, and programmatic initiatives to advance shared objectives and cross-border priorities. In the immediate term, INDA and EDANA will focus on laying a strong foundation for GNA, including establishing the organization and solidifying its governance structure. Looking ahead, Allied Membership is expected to be open to any not-for- profit trade, industry, or professional association whose mission aligns with that of the founding members—offering an inclusive platform for broader collaboration across the global nonwovens value chain. 'The formation of GNA is a milestone for our industry. By working together across regions, we can accelerate innovation, speak with a stronger voice globally, and deliver even greater value to our members,' said Tony Fragnito, President of INDA. 'This is not a merger—it's a strategic alliance built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to the future of nonwovens.' 'With the creation of GNA, we are positioning the nonwovens industry to meet global challenges with greater unity and impact,' said Murat Dogru, General Manager of EDANA. 'This collaborative structure allows us to scale our efforts, strengthen our influence, and pursue solutions that benefit our members worldwide.' GNA will be governed by a Board composed of six members from each founding organization –five appointed representatives plus the current Chair–, ensuring balanced representation and a regional perspective. This governance structure will promote transparency, long-term strategic alignment, and organizational stability while guiding shared policies, priorities, and programs.
