Two teens arrested on weapons charges in Danville
DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were arrested in Danville Wednesday night after police found guns in their possession, one of which was stolen.
Around 6:30 p.m., Danville police officers were patrolling in the Holiday Hills area. Police said officers tried to 'make contact' with two people walking at the intersection of Westview and Holiday Drive, but they ran from the officers.

Eventually, both were taken into custody, and police identified them as 18-year-old Dakiy Keys and a 17-year-old juvenile. After investigating, talking with witnesses, and using a Danville K9, the officers found two guns.
One was defaced because the serial number was scratched off, and the other one was stolen, police said.
Keys was taken to the Vermilion County Jail. He has been booked on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, being under the age of 21, possession of ammunition without a FOID card, and defacing identification marks on a firearm. The juvenile was brought to the Vermilion County Juvenile Detention Center and was booked on charges of possession of a stolen firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, being under the age of 21.

‘Went all out for everything'; Remembering Trooper Corey Thompsen through running
ST. JOSEPH, Ill. (WCIA) — Ryan Thompsen sat on his parent's patio Thursday afternoon. Last summer, he was in the same spot for a shared birthday party for him and his brother, Corey. 'He had hung up this huge screen for us to watch a movie,' Ryan said. 'He had the whole sound system set up for it, he had the projector set up for it, the screen set up — he just went 110% for anything that involved our family.' Thompsen family speaks out after Trooper's death The Thompsen family of five became a family of four back in October when Corey was killed in the line of duty. The 28-year-old Illinois State Trooper was hit by a truck when he was finishing up a traffic stop. Nearly eight months without his brother, Ryan said he holds onto Corey's attitude and determination. 'He went all out for everything,' Ryan said. That drive carried Corey through college, the police academy and the Illinois State Police Academy. It also helped the stand-out athlete cross finish line after finish line. The day of Corey's accident, Ryan had just gotten home from coaching a cross country meet. 'I had a text from my dad to me and my youngest brother, 'Hey you need to come home. Corey's had an accident,'' Ryan said. Fallen ISP Trooper Thompsen honored in press conference Corey was one of three boys, four years and nine days apart from Ryan, who said the loss is still surreal. 'It's never seemed like he's gone,' Ryan said. 'Sometimes it just really hits you.' Ongoing events and efforts to raise money for a memorial scholarship help his family feel closer to the 28-year-old. '[It] doesn't matter that he's my younger brother, that's somebody I can look up to for the rest of my life,' Ryan said. The Trooper Thompsen Memorial 5K is the family's latest way of keeping Corey's memory alive. 'He and I shared plenty of passions, especially running together,' Ryan said. 'We want it to be an event that everybody can show up to and feel like their community is together and just experiencing a really fun time.' Fallen State Trooper remembered by helping others through scholarship Ryan said he feels Corey's presence everywhere and all the time. He hopes people walk away from Saturday's race feeling the same. The event is Saturday, June 14 at the Woodard Family Park in St. Joseph. In addition to the 5K and kid's mile, a silent auction and 50/50 raffle will also be going on. Champaign woman to host event for gun violence, drug abuse awareness
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A Champaign woman is helping the community come together to honor gun violence and drug abuse victims. It's personal for organizer Shanna McGuire, whose brother died of drug use and her nephew was shot and killed. 'Went all out for everything'; Remembering Trooper Corey Thompsen through running She's held an event, the Hill Celebration, in their honor since 2022, but said it's especially important this year in light of recent gun violence. Two teenagers were shot near Oakwood Trace Townhomes on Sunday. Back in March 31-year-old Anthony Miller was killed in the same area. Wesley Park sits right alongside the Champaign home complex — which will be the backdrop for McGuire's event. 'There's a saying it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to come together and to combat gun violence, combat even the drug use, so coming together there's unity and power in numbers,' McGuire said. The man arrested for shooting Miller was found guilty of murder on Wednesday. This comes after he was acquitted of a 2023 murder this past summer. There are a few weeks until McGuire's event on June 28. She hopes people resonate with the stories of older community members and families who have experienced gun violence like herself. Danville man sentenced to 9 years for 2023 armed robbery
DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A Danville man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for an armed robbery that happened in October of 2023. Court records show KeShawn Stapleton, 23, was facing five felony counts for crimes including armed robbery and mob action and a misdemeanor count of obstructing identification. On Monday, he reached a plea deal with prosecutors that saw him plead guilty to a Class 1 felony count of armed robbery; the other counts were dismissed. Acquitted, accused again, convicted: Champaign man found guilty of murder Evidence presented in court showed that on Oct. 26, 2023, Stapleton was one of five Black males who approached a person walking to a trash dumpster near Lewis Street. The group held the victim at gunpoint and stole his backpack, which had an Xbox inside, his cell phone and the shoes off the victim's feet. The crime was recorded by a security camera. As detectives were speaking with the victim, Danville Police received a call about robbery suspects running toward Moore Street. When officers responded to the area, they saw several Black males exiting a car on Moore Street. Stapleton was arrested during this police encounter. The State's Attorney's Office said Moore was identified as one of the perpetrators based on his clothes; what he was wearing when he was arrested matched the clothes of the suspect who was recorded on camera taking the robbery victim's shoes from his feet. The shoes and the victim's cell phone were subsequently found inside the vehicle Stapleton exited on Moore Street. Sangamon, Menard Co. Crime Stoppers seeking tips in theft at Springfield church 'I commend the Danville Police Department for quickly identifying and apprehending these violent offenders. We are grateful to the victim for coming forward,' State's Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said in a news release. 'Armed robbery is a dangerous crime that threatens the safety of our entire community. My office remains committed to working with the police to pursue justice and protect victims of violent crime.' Stapleton was given credit for 592 days he's already served in custody, and his sentence will be served at 50%. Once out of prison, he will spend one year on parole. Two other people have been charged in connection to the robbery. Alvin Daniels, charged with the same five felony counts as Stapleton, pleaded guilty in February to one of them and was sentenced to five years in prison. Another person, who is a juvenile, has been charged, but the State's Attorney's Office did not go into further detail.
