Selangor MMEA detains boats off Selangor for licence violations

The Star26-05-2025

PORT KLANG: The Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained two passenger boats on Sunday for licence violations by not naming the vessels' skippers in their documents.
Selangor Maritime director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the boats were detained separately by agency patrols conducting routine operations.
The first boat, sailing from Westport waters towards the Royal Selangor Yacht Club jetty, was detained at 6.08pm.
"The boat was detained 0.3 nautical miles south of Tanjung Harapan, where two men were found on board," said Captain Abdul Muhaimin.
The men are aged 37 and 39 and are Malaysians, with one serving as the vessel's skipper.
The second boat was detained 14 minutes later nearby, en route from Pulau Angsa waters to Westport.
"Preliminary investigations revealed the boat was operated by a 30-year-old local man acting as skipper," said Captain Abdul Muhaimin.
The names of both skippers were not on the boats' valid registration documents, breaching legal provisions.
"Both boats were escorted to the Marine Police jetty in Pulau Indah and handed over to the Selangor Maritime Malaysia investigating officer," said Captain Abdul Muhaimin.
The case is being investigated under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO 1952) for failing to update the skippers' names and not adhering to licensing requirements.
Captain Abdul Muhaimin then said that it is important to comply with licensing provisions to avoid legal action.
"Maritime Malaysia will not tolerate individuals who breach maritime rules. A boat's licence is a responsibility for everyone's safety," he said.
The public can report maritime emergencies by calling the Selangor Maritime Operations Centre at 03-31760627 or through 999.

Aidiladha weekend sees uptick in illegal crossings at Sungai Golok

RANTAU PANJANG: Droves of Malaysians, especially from Kelantan, have illegally crossed into Thailand via Sungai Golok, during the long Hari Raya Aidiladha weekend. It is understood that a large number of people — many of them young adults — would use the illegal jetties nestled between riverside houses along Sungai Golok, which runs along the border between here in Kelantan and the southern Thai town that bears the river's name. "It cannot be denied that a majority of Malaysians go to Sungai Golok to visit relatives, but some might take the opportunity to go there for entertainment," said the sources. A local parking attendant, identified only as Pak Lah, sadi the festive period saw a surge of people illegally crossing into Thailand. "They usually come in groups and will cross late at night or before sunrise. "Some return before dawn, while others stay until the next day," he said, adding that many are drawn by the nightlife and entertainment in Sungai Golok. Pak Lah said the risk of arrest or being fined did not deter them. "These people know the risks, but they are still willing to take the chance. "They believe if they go at the right time, they can avoid the authorities," he said. Checks at several illegal jetties here today found many groups crossing at night or in the early morning to avoid detection by the authorities. Many cars could be seen parked near jetties, where boats were moored waiting for customers. Authorities had warned that illegal crossings not only had legal consequences but also posed safety risks.
