PHOTO: THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK Boy, 3, among three dead as boat capsizes off Malaysia's Port Klang PORT KLANG, Selangor - A three-year-old boy was among three people who died after a boat capsized at sea on June 6. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the tragedy occurred 0.3 nautical miles west of Tanjung Harapan. The recovered remains include the boy, Darren Gan, and two others, Mr Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Mr Fong Yong Sen, 29. The child's parents, Mr Gan Hon Tat, 32, and Ms Careen Man, 29, from Klang Utama, are still missing. The sixth passenger, Mr Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17, was rescued alive. 'Selangor MMEA is currently conducting a search and rescue operation for the couple,' said Captain Abdul Muhaimin, adding that the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Johor Bahru activated the rescue mission at 5.15pm on June 6. A search and rescue operations centre has been set up at the Selangor MMEA office to coordinate efforts. The Marine Police, MMEA, and Fire and Rescue Department are involved in the operations. Capt Abdul Muhaimin stated the Fire and Rescue Department would continue rescue work as Mr Gan and Ms Man may still be in the boat, which is partially covered in mud. 'The boat has been towed to the Selangor MMEA's floating jetty,' he added. Initial investigations suggest the boat may have capsized after losing control. 'Maritime Malaysia reminds the public to prioritise safety aspects when engaging in activities at sea. 'The use of safety jackets, monitoring weather conditions, and expertise in handling boats are essential considerations. 'Maritime Malaysia urges the public to pray for the safe rescue of the missing persons,' he added. Capt Abdul Muhaimin urged anyone with information about maritime emergencies to contact the Selangor MMEA operations centre at 03-3176 0627 or call the emergency line at 999. Meanwhile, Sekinchan Fishermen Association adviser Chia Tian Hee recently told The Star that the sea has become unpredictable. He noted that big waves now appear without warning, causing havoc for fishing boats. 'In the past, waves would start small, warning fishermen that the sea was about to become choppy, allowing them to return ashore. 'But now, big waves emerge suddenly and aggressively. There have been instances where fishing boats capsized, but luckily there were no fatalities,' Mr Chia said. MMEA detains Malaysian-registered vessel crewed illegally by foreigners
KLANG: A Malaysian vessel, illegally manned by Indonesians, landed in hot water after it was caught flouting maritime and Immigration regulations by the Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). Selangor Maritime director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the vessel, which was operated by a skipper and two crew members, aged between 38 and 48 years old, was detained Tuesday (June 3) some 0.16 nautical miles south of Tanjung Harapan near here. He added that the boat was apprehended during the MMEA's enforcement patrols around Klang waters. 'An inspection found that the vessel had breached its licence condition under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 with various offences,'' said Captain Abdul Muhaimin. He added that the offences included the skipper's name not being the one stipulated in the licence as well as failure to provide the 500GT Domestic Trade Voyages licence. 'Not only that, the cargo boat's crew members' names were not found in the licence and the vessel's Automatic Identification System (AIS) was also inactive and finally, one of the crew members did not have a seaman's book,'' Captain Abdul Muhaimin said. He added the cargo boat had also flouted the Immigration Act 1959/63 as one of the foreigners did not possess valid identification documents. The Malaysian vessel had also breached maritime regulations by hiring foreigners. The vessel and the trio were taken to the Marine Police jetty at Pulau Indah to be handed over to the Selangor MMEA investigating officer for further action. 'Maritime Malaysia will not compromise on any individuals who carelessly or purposely breach the country's laws in the Malaysian maritime zone,'' said Captain Abdul Muhaimin. He added any complaints, information on maritime crime, or emergency incidents at sea can be channelled to the authorities by contacting the emergency line 999 or the Selangor State Maritime Operations Centre at 03-3176 0627 for immediate response.

Selangor MMEA detains boats off Selangor for licence violations
PORT KLANG: The Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained two passenger boats on Sunday for licence violations by not naming the vessels' skippers in their documents. Selangor Maritime director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the boats were detained separately by agency patrols conducting routine operations. The first boat, sailing from Westport waters towards the Royal Selangor Yacht Club jetty, was detained at 6.08pm. "The boat was detained 0.3 nautical miles south of Tanjung Harapan, where two men were found on board," said Captain Abdul Muhaimin. The men are aged 37 and 39 and are Malaysians, with one serving as the vessel's skipper. The second boat was detained 14 minutes later nearby, en route from Pulau Angsa waters to Westport. "Preliminary investigations revealed the boat was operated by a 30-year-old local man acting as skipper," said Captain Abdul Muhaimin. The names of both skippers were not on the boats' valid registration documents, breaching legal provisions. "Both boats were escorted to the Marine Police jetty in Pulau Indah and handed over to the Selangor Maritime Malaysia investigating officer," said Captain Abdul Muhaimin. The case is being investigated under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO 1952) for failing to update the skippers' names and not adhering to licensing requirements. Captain Abdul Muhaimin then said that it is important to comply with licensing provisions to avoid legal action. "Maritime Malaysia will not tolerate individuals who breach maritime rules. MMEA detains container ship for anchoring illegally off Sekinchan
PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) Selangor beanch detained a container vessel that had anchored illegally in Malaysian waters. Selangor Maritime director Captain (Maritime) Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the vessel was detained 22.5 nautical miles southwest of Sekinchan at about 1.20pm Friday (May 16). He added the ship was detained following information from the Klang Area Control Centre's Sea Surveillance System. "The ship's suspicious position was detected at about 9.20am and a check with the central region Marine Department found that the container vessel had anchored without permission," said Abdul Muhaimin. A maritime patrol boat was sent to the location and initial inspection indicated that the the ship, which was registered in Liberia, was managed by a 44-year-old Russian captain with 23 crew members of various nationalities aged between 32 to 50 years old, added Abdul Muhaimin. "All of them had complete identification documents. "Further investigations found the ship's captain had failed to provide any documents showing permission to anchor and hence had commited a breach under the Merchant Ship Ordinance 1952 for docking without the Malaysian Marine director-general's permission," he added. According to Abdul Muhaimin, a detention order was issued while the captain and second engineer of the vessel were taken to the Selangor Maritime Department headquarters for further investigations. "If found guilty, they could face a fine of not more than RM100,000 or a jail term of two years or both," said Abdul Muhaimin. Abdul Muhaimin added the MMEA would continue to strengthen monitoring and law enforcement in Malaysian waters, especially off Selangor. Cargo vessel detained in Selangor waters
PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a cargo vessel, which had raised suspicion of being involved in undesirable activities in Malaysian waters. Selangor MMEA director Maritime Capt Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the ship's AIS (Automatic Identification System) had transmitted two different names with the same MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) number. 'Investigations are being conducted under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952," he added in a statement on Friday (May 9). According to Abdul Muhaimin, the state MMEA had detained the vessel on Friday at about 0.23 nautical miles east of Pulau Che Mat Zin during a routine patrol under the agency's OP EHSAN and OP TIRIS 3.0 in Selangor waters. 'The ship, which was heading to SouthPort, had appeared on the radar with two different names and hence was detained for inspection. 'Initial inspection found that the ship was operated by a 63-year-old skipper with two crew members aged 26 and 35. 'All of them are Malaysian citizens," said Abdul Muhaimin. The vessel was taken to the Marine Police jetty at Pulau Indah near here to be handed over to the Selangor MMEA investigating officer for further probe. Abdul Muhaimin said the MMEA would continue to strengthen monitoring and law enforcement in Malaysian waters, especially Selangor waters.
