TUI announces extreme day trips to Lapland from major UK airport

Summer isn't over yet, but TUI is already looking ahead to the festive season with the launch of its 'ultimate Christmas day trip'. Announced as part of the 2026 winter schedule, the travel company's 'Search for Santa' package is back, and this year, travellers from Cardiff Airport can get in on the fun too. The 'extreme' day trip — which costs £750pp and runs from 11 airports across the UK and Ireland — offers families the chance to jet off to Lapland, meet Santa Claus, and be back in their bed by evening. Travellers land in Kittila in Finland around midday before heading to the Snow Village, with its ice hotel, which features igloo-like rooms and an icebar. Then its time to hop on a sleigh ride, led, of course, by Rudolph. There'll be husky rides, snowmobiling, and storytelling ahead of the main event: meeting Santa and his elves in the snowy woodland. Flights depart from London Gatwick, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol, East Midlands, Cardiff, Glasgow, Birmingham, Stansted and Dublin. Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. A route from Bournemouth Airport to Lapland will also resume in Winter 2026 after it was suspended in 2019. It's a whirlwind winter adventure, but these day trips aren't without criticism. While a quick jaunt might be a chance to squeeze in a holiday without knocking your annual leave balance, there are environmental consequences to consider. A Facebook group called 'Extreme Day Trips', which boasts over 240,000 members, is a hub for advice on flights and itineraries, and whether making it there and back in 24 hours is even possible. Some UK travellers have made it as far as Dubai and New York in under 48 hours, while others have dashed to Cairo to see the pyramids in less than a day. Many more have taken advantage of Britain's proximity to Europe for a quick getaway. But Matt Phillis, travel expert at Polarsteps, previously told Metro that th trend is not without risk. 'A flight generates 100 times more carbon dioxide per hour compared to a train or bus ride,' he said. 'But short-haul flights, covering less than 1000 miles, contribute disproportionately more to carbon emissions. This is because take-off and landing are so energy-intensive.' For a more sustainable approach, Matt suggested taking the train or bus instead of flying. 'Taking the train from London to Paris instead of flying cuts your CO2 emissions by a whopping 90%,' he said. 'You'd be surprised by how easy it is to do a day trip to Brussels or Amsterdam if you catch an early Eurostar out of London. If you are flying, however, he recommends doing your research and using a sustainable airline. He said: 'British Airways is the highest-ranking UK-based airline due to its roadmap to net zero. 'When it comes to short-haul airlines, Easyjet ranks top with its emissions intensity being almost 18% lower than the global average.' Metro previously spoke to extreme day trippers about their fast flight turnarounds and jam-packed itineraries. Lauren Brogan became an accidental extreme day tripper after she calculated that a quick trip to Geneva would be cheaper than staying overnight at a hotel in Glasgow, near where she lives. Lauren found cheap flight tickets to the Swiss city on Skyscanner and paid just £52 for a return from Edinburgh, staying at a hotel by the lakefront in Versoix. She said she loved the 'spontaneity' of the trip, adding: 'It was a city I'd never thought about visiting before, but there were loads to see and do and it's absolutely stunning.' More Trending She organised a full itinerary, which included visiting the United Nations Building, Botanical Gardens, The Flower Clock, Favarger Chocolate Factory, the Broken Chair monument, Mont Blanc Bridge and Lake Geneva. Lauren said she would recommend an extreme day trip to anyone. She said: 'It's a great way to maximise annual leave and visit more places around the world on a budget.' However, there are some downsides, the most obvious one being time. Lauren said it was 'difficult' trying to fit everything into the trip, admitting that there wasn't enough time to see anything and that she 'still needs to go back to see more of the city'. Eloise Skinner, author and psychotherapist, warns that with extreme trips, 'people might be less concerned about the quality of the experience, and more about the ability to display the trip online'. She added: 'Another factor could be the sense of achievement or adrenaline as a whole – quick trips can feel thrilling, exciting and non-stop – all emotions that we can crave, especially if our daily lives start to feel routine and predictable.' These trips, she says, could result in negative health effects. She said: 'Exhaustion and a sense of being drained might be a result of extreme day trips. 'We might feel and bit disorientated since we don't spend long enough in a particular place to get our bearings or a sense of comfort within the environment.' Eloise advises that spending time researching may help 'reduce feelings of overwhelm and exhaustion'. She also advises 'finding ways to stay grounded during fast-paced trips' – such as scheduling moments to rest or 'move to a slower pace'. Do you have a story to share? At 38, I almost gave up on love — until I met a local love in the Caribbean

Welcome to How I Do It, the series in which we give you a seven-day sneak peek into the sex life of a stranger. This week we're talking to Carla*, 38, who is straight and lives in London. After almost giving up on love, a chance encounter while on holiday in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) led to romance. Carla was sunbathing on the beach when local tour guide Daniel*, 38, offered to show her around. The chemistry was instant and a one-night-stand led to something more. Now the pair are embarking on a long-distance relationship, with Carla flying out to the Carribbean every few months. She tells Metro: 'It was so unexpected. I haven't been in a long-term relationship since my early-30s, and I was pretty much resigning myself to the fact that I'd be single forever. 'But from day one, we both knew this wasn't just a holiday fling. When I came back home, we were FaceTiming every single day, and we naturally fell into a relationship. 'I was nervous about telling people as it's all a bit cliche – a white woman and a man from the Carribbean – but people have been supportive.' So, without further ado, here's how Carla* got on this week. X Factor icon Diana Vickers and Metro's dating expert Alice Giddings dive into your wildest sex, love, and dating dilemmas – every Tuesday. Listen wherever you get your podcasts or watch on YouTube. Financially, Daniel can't afford to come to the UK – but to be honest, I'm more than happy to visit him in the BVI, it's paradise. I do all the body admin before I leave: pedicure, manicure, eyelash lift, and I get a full body wax – facial hair, armpits, full Hollywood and thighs. I've probably spent about £250 before I've even left. Daniel picks me up from the airport armed with food – he knows I'll be hungry, but also it means I can eat in the go, so we can have sex as soon as we get to his. We rip each other's clothes off and do it in missionary, which is our go to position. It was quick – which it always is the first time we see each other. I notice that Daniel hasn't bothered to do any manscaping down there, and I roll my eyes thinking about the effort us women always put in. After a break, who do it again. We start with missionary, but Daniel loves doggy. He's massive though, so we have to build up to it. Daniel's taken the day off so we can spend time together. We wake up, and before saying a word to each other, we're having sex. Later, he asks if I want to go for a walk 'somewhere private.' He knows I like having sex outdoors, and even though he finds it's a little nerve-wracking, he's willing to indulge my fantasy. We go to a secluded beach, and have sex in the sea. I feel like I'm way more flexible in the water – I can bend in ways I never knew I could! We come home and have sex a few more times. The sex is quite loving now, where as the first few times are a bit more feral. We wake up and have sex again in the morning. I'm realising I much prefer sex first thing – I get too sleepy at bedtime. We're doing it so often but I don't feel sore down there, as I'm always so turned on by him. Daniel drops me off at the beach while he's at work. Sometimes I can be here from 9am to 5pm – I while away the time reading or scrolling on Instagram. It isn't until Daniel picksme up though that I realise I'm terribly sunburnt. I'm literally red raw across my chest, belly and legs. He gets a cold flannel to soothe my skin, but it' was's drying out within a few seconds because my skin is so hot. He quite rightly suggests we shouldn't have sex so as not to irritate my skin anymore. As we fall asleep, I think about how lucky I am. It might sound like the bear minimum, but just a few months ago I couldn't imagine that there was actually a kind, thoughtful man out there who would want to take care of me like this. Daniel takes me to a different beach this morning – before he leaves, he insists I sit under an umbrella all day. My skin is blistering now which once again is putting a stop to any sex. That evening, I think about offering to give him a blow job, but I'm too lazy. Our relationship isn't all about sex though. We have great banter, he makes me laugh so much, and most importantly, he thinks I'm hilarious (which I am). It's always been so easy between us. I wake up and my skin is still really sore. There's a part of me that feels quite panicked. I've flown all this way and I want Daniel to feel some love from me. I don't think our relationship is dependant on us having sex – I know it's deeper than that – but after years of dealing with men who lie, cheat and are emotionally unavailable, it's hard to break those thought habits. So, I initiate sex. We had to go very gently, but it feels loving and I'm glad we had that moment of closeness. After my day at the beach he picks me up. We have a routine where we come back home and shower together. It's always fun and Inevitably, this leads to sex again. If I'm honest, I don't really like shower sex. I hate the confined sex and I always feel like I'm going to slip and break something. But he loves it and after the outdoor sex the other day, I'll do this for him. I wake up with a strong desire to pee, and immediately feel that familiar sensation of cystitis. F*CK. This always happens when I have a lot of sex after a dry spell. Last time I came to see Daniel in the BVI, I took some herbal tablets every day that were recommended to me by a friend who also suffers with cystitis. Obviously, this time I forgot them. Daniel doesn't quite understand what's going on, but he's very sweet and takes me to the pharmacy. I've been drinking as many litres of water as possible, and I've been peeing in the sea which is somehow less painful. Tonight we come home, shower and have sex again. It hurt, but I'm horny. I still have a touch of cystitis but it feels much better today. We have sex in the morning, and again when we get home. Then that night I have a special request: I want him to wake me up with sex. It's a fantasy I've had for a while (as long as it's totally consensual, of course). I'm vaguely aware in the night of Daniel starting to finger me, and I'm instantly ready for sex. We shag in missionary, with a bit of spooning sex thrown in, and when we both finish, I instantly fall back to sleep. Heaven. More Trending It's that time of the trip where I start to feel that knot in the pit of my stomach, as I know there's only a few days left before I have to leave him to go home. There are always so many tears, and I hate not knowing when I'll see him again. We've been together for less than a year, so it's too early to talk about relocating. If we lived in the same city, we wouldn't be talking about moving in together. View More » It's hard, but I trust Daniel 100%. I want a future with him in it, we just don't know what that will look like yet. Do you have a story to share? I was Jet2 and Virgin cabin crew – here's 3 'secret' European destinations

Metro journalists select and curate the products that feature on our site. If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission – learn more Most of us can only dream of being paid to travel, but for Helana Jackson, it's a reality. Working as cabin crew for Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic, the 30-year-old spent the early days of her career jetting off to destinations like New York, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, Canada, and Switzerland. These days, she works as a TikTok micro-influencer, having built a loyal following by sharing tips on hidden gems and adventurous locations. At Metro, we're passionate about promoting off-the-beaten-path destinations. We support sustainable tourism and want to do our part to put places actively seeking visitors on the map. We asked Helana to give us her top three European destinations that have lots to offer and a manageable amount of tourists. And spoiler: two are in Spain, one is in Italy. Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. As she tells us: 'We're only here once. If you can, you've got to get out there and see the world.' La Manga is synonymous with the La Manga Club, a sprawling luxury resort and a playground for the rich and famous. But Helana says there's more to this region, if you're willing to scratch the surface. Located in Murcia, Spain, La Manga is a narrow spit of land that divides the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor, Europe's largest saltwater lagoon. While huge numbers of visitors descend on the region for its white sandy beaches and clear blue sea each year, this paradise still has many unspoiled corners. One of these, Helana says, is Calblanque Beach, which is regularly featured in 'best Spanish beach' roundups by The Telegraph and Condé Nast. For Helana, the best time to visit is spring. She says there are fewer crowds, and the weather averages around 23°C to 27°C. In the summer months, La Manga sees highs of 34°C. Paddleboarding and windsurfing are popular there, but if you haven't got the time (or the funds) to complete a windsurfing course, wing surfing is a great introduction. It uses a handheld, inflatable wing to propel you and your board across the water. A 90-minute wingfoil class costs €70 (£61). Further down the coast in Cabo de Palos, the Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve is considered one of the best diving spots in Europe. When it comes to food and drink, Helana says La Manga is generally quite affordable. She recommends Fanático Beach, a beach bar with sunbed hire and live music, and La Mestiza, a beach restaurant with sunset views. Here, a draught Heineken beer is €3.60 (£3), while a glass of wine is €5.50 (£4). Looking for a twin break? La Manga is a 20-minute drive from Cartagena, Europe's sunniest city. Helana went to Cogne by chance. She searched for the cheapest flight available, booked a seat, and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful places she's ever visited. The village, in the Aosta Valley region of northern Italy, is flanked by snow-dusted mountains and forested slopes. On a clear day, Helana says you can see Mont Blanc. It's less than two hours from Turin, which Helana describes as Milan without the crowds. And it's cheap to get there; on Monday, August 25, a Ryanair flight from Stansted to Turin is only £18. Helana's highlights include Cascate di Lillaz, an 'otherworldly' waterfall that can be reached by an easy hike. She also recommends renting a bike and exploring the trails of Gran Paradiso National Park. But her favourite moment from the trip was her time at Hotel Belvedere, a chalet perched above the village. The journey there was breathtaking, along a winding road through the valley, and the food (homemade ravioli and local wine) was delicious and affordable. Back to Spain for Helana's final recommendation: Guadalest, a mountainous village in the Alicante province with 240 residents. There are plenty of reasons to be fascinated by this tiny patch of paradise. It may be a 30-minute drive from the infamous party town of Benidorm, but Guadalest is worlds away from the boozy mayhem. Forget Sticky Vicky — life is slow here. You'll be kayaking, hiking, and exploring ancient ruins rather than revelling on the strip. Helana's recommendations include a hike to the reservoir and the walking trail from Guadalest to Beniardá and Benimantell. The climb to Guadalest Castle, a 12th-century Moorish fortress, is a good choice for a combination of hiking and history. It's challenging, but your reward is a panoramic view of the whitewashed village below. Entry to the castle is €4 (£3.46), which includes access to the San Jose Castle ruins, the Alcozaiba prison, and the bell tower. There are plenty of museums in the castle grounds, such as the Micro-Gigantic Museum, Salt and Pepper Shakers Museum, and the Ethnological Museum. Though Guadalest is traditionally a day-trip destination — from Alicante or Benidorm, you can spend six to eight hours exploring the Valley and the Algar waterfalls for around £69 — Helana recommends staying the night. 'We were able to experience a slower, more authentic side of Spain.' Helana stayed at Casa Oliveta, a rustic guesthouse just a six-minute drive from the main village. Prices per night range from £130 to £160, depending on room type. In Guadalest, the evenings are calm and peaceful — perfect for watching the sunset and enjoying a relaxed dinner. More Trending The best spot for all of the above is Restaurant L'Hort, a traditional Valencian eatery nestled high up in the mountains. Helana concludes: 'Guadalest gave us a taste of mountain life, with natural beauty, culture, and tranquility all in one spot.'
