Marine pollution threatens blue economy
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has warned that marine pollution poses a severe threat to Pakistan's blue economy. It harms biodiversity, fisheries, and tourism while also contributing to climate change, economic loss, and public health risks.
According to an official statement, the minister issued this warning while chairing a meeting of the Marine Pollution Control Board. Representatives from all relevant ministries and departments were present.
To address the crisis, two committees were formed to identify key issues and submit reports within 20 days. These will focus on the Sewage Treatment Plant-III (STP-III) and the Combined Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP), both aimed at treating industrial and municipal wastewater.
The minister expressed displeasure over a 15-year gap in board meetings and directed that regular sessions now be held. He also called for a comprehensive public awareness campaign and urged stakeholders to engage the public in tackling marine pollution.
He stressed the need for strict enforcement of environmental laws under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance and the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act, with heavy penalties for violators.
Chaudhry advocated expanding SEPA's powers to ensure effective regulation. He stated that up to 90% of land-based marine pollutionmainly untreated sewage and solid wastecould be prevented with targeted measures.
He highlighted the far-reaching impacts of pollution, including contaminated seafood, declining fish stocks, lost tourism revenue, and erosion of coastal infrastructure. He also warned of marine habitat destruction and possible species extinction.
Sea-based pollution, such as ship waste, ballast water discharge, offshore drilling, fishing operations, and shipbreaking, contributes about 10% to overall marine pollution. The minister urged the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and maritime authorities to enforce stricter controls.
Officials briefed the minister on Karachi's alarming pollution levels. The city releases over 472 million gallons of sewage daily, including nearly 100 million gallons of industrial waste. This flows into the Lyari and Malir rivers, eventually reaching the Arabian Sea.
Solid wasteincluding plastics, recyclables, and biodegradable materialsis dumped near coastal zones, worsening marine degradation.
Proposed solutions include installing nets on stormwater drains, fencing rivers, and removing floating trash from harbours. The statement also urged expediting the completion of the Sewerage Treatment Project and building new plants in critical areas like Manora, Baba Bhit, Kalri, and Phitti nullahs.

KARACHI: The Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) signed on Tuesday a letter of intent (LoI) with Chinese firm Xinning Enterprise to 'stimulate major industrial and commercial investments at Gwadar Port and its Free Zone', the Ministry of Maritime Affairs said. Located in Balochistan, Gwadar Port is a strategically important deep-sea port and a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a massive infrastructure project aimed at boosting regional trade and connectivity. Last month, the government unveiled a strategic plan to expand Gwadar Port's operational capacity by introducing new shipping lines and launching a ferry service connecting Pakistan with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. 'The initiative is part of the government's broader strategy to enhance regional connectivity, boost maritime trade, and position Gwadar as a major hub in the Arabian Sea,' Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said then. 'We aim to transform Gwadar into a strategic transhipment and logistics centre, benefiting Pakistan and the wider region.' The LoI signed on Tuesday by Yi Jiang, representing Xinning Enterprise, outlined plans for diverse ventures and received by Umer Zaffar Shaikh, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs on the behalf of Chairman Gwadar Port Authority while Chairman Gwadar Port Authority, Noor-ul-Haq Baloch joined the event through Zoom. 'These ventures include developing Gwadar Port as a regional transshipment center, launching new industrial projects, optimising existing facilities within the Gwadar Free Zone, and relocating industries,' the ministry said. 'They also pledged continued good-faith discussions to identify investment opportunities, finalise operational details, and establish mechanisms for cooperation.' Chaudhry reaffirmed Pakistan government's commitment to transforming Gwadar into a global maritime gateway and industrial powerhouse, emphasising that collaborations with reputable international enterprises would accelerate Pakistan's maritime and economic ambitions. On Monday, the government approved its first-ever ferry service licence to an international ferry operator, Sea Keepers, authorising the company to operate routes connecting Pakistan with GCC countries, according to a statement. The new ferry service is expected to serve hundreds of thousands annually, particularly pilgrims travelling to Iran and Iraq, alongside workers and tourists bound for GCC states.

Fight against terrorism: Minister urges KP, Balochistan to fulfill their responsibilities
ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry on Monday issued a stern warning to the provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, urging them to fulfill their responsibilities in the fight against terrorism, and cautioning that continued 'irresponsible conduct' would no longer be tolerated. Speaking at a Youm-e-Shuhada (Martyrs' Day) ceremony held at the Islamabad Police Headquarters, Chaudhry said that while Pakistan's security forces are fully equipped to combat terrorism, a successful fight requires strong political support. 'Security forces are fulfilling their responsibilities, but I want to tell the provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where terrorism is on the rise, to fulfil their political responsibility,' he said, adding that this cannot happen that on the one hand, our security forces and ordinary citizens are offering sacrifices on a daily basis and the provincial governments do not fulfill their responsibilities. The minister warned the governments of both the provinces to fulfill their responsibilities as their 'irresponsible conduct' would not be acceptable any further. Chaudhry said that at present, terrorism is again on the rise in the country. 'Pakistan has suffered 90,000 casualties, including security personnel, citizens and people from every walk of life,' he said, adding that these 90,000 sacrifices were made for ensuring peace and security in Pakistan. He said that Pakistan is fighting terrorism as the frontline state, and if Pakistan failed to combat terrorism, it would have broader implications for regional and global security. The minister further said that the Iranian president assured Pakistan that they will fight terrorism jointly, and this will help in improving the situation in Pakistan. He said that Pakistan is holding talks with Afghanistan regarding terrorism; therefore, Afghanistan also needs to fulfil its responsibility as a neighbour. He said the present government has ended the disparity of salaries between different security forces. Further steps will be taken for improving the capacity of the Islamabad Police and Federal Constabulary (FC), he said. Chaudhary has assured to provide all necessary resources, including modern weapons to the police force. He paid tribute to the services and sacrifices of the police personnel. There has been a reduction of over 50 percent in heinous crimes in the federal capital territory due to the efforts of the police, he claimed. First ferry service licence for Gulf approved
While a large number of pilgrims on their way to Iraq have been stranded due to the ban on land travel to neighbouring Iran, the government of Pakistan has approved the first ferry service licence. Applications of ferry operators had been pending approval since 2017-18 and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, while taking a fast-track route, approved the first licence on Monday for an international ferry operator. UK-based company Sea Keeper will run vessels on routes connecting Pakistan with Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries. The government is under serious pressure from around one million pilgrims, who attend Arbaeen (the Chehlum of Imam Hussain) in Karbala, as land travel to Iran has been halted recently without any prior notice. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry led the move by fast-tracking approval of the ferry service. He emphasised that the passenger shipping service would not only offer pilgrims going to Iraq and Iran safe and secure travel but would also provide an opportunity for boosting regional connectivity and economic activity via sea routes. "Initial operations will commence from the ports of Karachi and Gwadar using modern vessels equipped with essential amenities to ensure safe and affordable travel. Expansion of routes and port calls is planned based on demand and bilateral agreements," said the minister in a statement. The launch of ferry service forms part of Pakistan's broader strategy to develop its blue economy, improve trade logistics and promote maritime tourism, reflecting a renewed commitment to sustainable regional sea transport infrastructure, he stated. Sources in the Ministry of Maritime Affairs confirmed that more ferry service licences were expected to be issued in the near future as a licensing committee was scrutinising the applications. The licensing committee comprises officials of maritime affairs ministry, defence ministry, foreign affairs ministry, interior ministry, representatives from Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) and port and shipping authorities. PNSC will be the regulator of ferry service providing companies to keep a close watch on the technical aspects of ships and vessel services. Meanwhile, a senior official of the Karachi Port Trust said that a ferry terminal had already been established at the port. As soon as relevant formalities are notified, the terminal will be handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency for handling immigration matters. Other relevant departments including the Customs and security divisions will also depute their staff at KPT and Gwadar Port terminals.
