Origin & Berlin Packaging partner on sustainable PET bottle caps

Fibre2Fashion06-08-2025
Origin Materials, Inc. ('Origin') (NASDAQ: ORGN, ORGNW), a technology company with a mission to enable the world's transition to sustainable materials, announced a strategic customer relationship with Berlin Packaging, the world's largest Hybrid Packaging Supplier, for sustainable PET bottlecaps.
Under this agreement, Berlin Packaging has agreed to purchase PET 1881 caps from Origin Materials for sale and distribution to its broad customer base, which includes many of the world's major beverage companies. The partnership brings together the innovative Origin PET cap product portfolio, beginning with the 1881 beverage closure, and Berlin Packaging's global value-added distribution capabilities.
Origin Materials has partnered with Berlin Packaging to supply sustainable PET 1881 caps, marking a major step in eco-friendly packaging. The caps, made via thermoforming and 100 per cent recycled PET, offer recyclability and shelf-life benefits. This strategic deal expands Origin's market reach and supports Berlin's sustainability goals in the $65 billion caps and closures market.
The PET 1881 caps represent a technological breakthrough that can enable lighter packaging, improved shelf life, and "mono-material' containers that enhance recyclability and promote circularity. The caps can be made with 100% post-consumer recycled PET and used in food-grade applications, unlike many PP and HDPE caps, and are made by thermoforming instead of traditional injection molding.
Berlin Packaging is the world's largest Hybrid Packaging Supplier that continues to build their reputation as global stewards dedicated to cutting-edge innovation, technology, and design. With 1,700 global suppliers, over 55,000 SKUs, and over 100 locations across the globe, Berlin combines the best elements of packaging manufacturing, distribution, and value-added services for their customers. Their commitment to leading the future of sustainable packaging is outlined in their 2024 Sustainability Report.
'When we first connected with Berlin Packaging, the potential, vision, and strong degree of alignment was obvious,' said Origin CEO John Bissell . 'Their broad and deep distribution footprint not only immediately extends our market reach for 1881, but also opens the door for all our forthcoming formats across all closure applications globally. As a strategic customer, Berlin was exceptionally attractive because of their expertise in connecting closure products with brands to unlock the highest value opportunities. We look forward to working together.'
Balaji Jayaseelan, VP of Sustainability at Berlin Packaging, commented: 'At Berlin Packaging, our sustainability strategy is focused on innovation, collaboration, and measurable impact. We are driven by the belief that Anything Is Possible, and we see that belief in Origin as well. We're excited to partner with Origin to bring their world-changing PET caps to our world-class customers.'
Bissell added: 'We believe this strategic customer relationship is a turning point for Origin. We've announced our plans to ramp supply quickly, and today we've provided insight into our first publicly named customer. The sophistication and reach of Berlin Packaging is welcome alongside Origin's growing list of prospective customers in different stages of our pipeline. It is an honor to work with Berlin Packaging as we begin to address the $65 billion global caps and closures market.' Indian-origin man fired by Elon Musk makes a comeback with ₹260 crore AI startup

Former Twitter chief executive Parag Agrawal, who was dismissed by Elon Musk following his $44 billion takeover of the platform in 2022, has re-emerged with a bold new venture. The Indian-origin technologist has launched Parallel Web Systems Inc., a Palo Alto-based startup building infrastructure tools for artificial intelligence companies. Agrawal, who began his career as a Twitter engineer before rising to CEO in 2021, kept a low profile after being removed when Musk.(ICPC News) A ₹ 260 crore bet on AI infrastructure Founded in 2023, Parallel has already raised $30 million (around ₹260 crore) from prominent investors, including Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital, and Index Ventures, according to Bloomberg and TechCrunch. The startup's mission is to help AI systems conduct large-scale research across the web, a core challenge as demand for real-time, high-quality data accelerates. Mobile finder: Google Pixel 10 series launching later this week Agrawal, who began his career as a Twitter engineer before rising to CEO in 2021, kept a low profile after being removed when Musk restructured the company, now rebranded as X. His return with Parallel marks a significant shift, from leading a social media giant to building the digital backbone for AI research. Parallel's focus on 'web intelligence' In a recent LinkedIn post, Agrawal described Parallel's goal as enabling companies to harness 'web intelligence' for their products. He noted that the platform already powers millions of research tasks daily for startups and enterprises. One unnamed public company, he claimed, has integrated Parallel's system to automate workflows previously handled by humans, achieving results 'exceeding human-level accuracy.' The company's tools are designed to plug directly into AI platforms and agents, giving them the ability to retrieve, organise, and analyse online information at scale. This functionality is increasingly vital as chatbots, virtual assistants, and enterprise AI products rely on dynamic web data rather than static training sets. A comeback in Silicon Valley's AI race For Agrawal, Parallel is more than a business, it's a comeback. His short and turbulent tenure at Twitter ended abruptly in late 2022, when Musk dismissed top executives after completing the acquisition. With Parallel, he is repositioning himself as a founder in one of the fastest-growing segments of the AI industry. Still, competition looms large. Parallel will face rivals offering retrieval APIs, as well as AI model developers building similar capabilities in-house. Yet, with strong investor backing, early traction, and Agrawal's technical reputation, the startup has already drawn attention as one of Silicon Valley's most ambitious AI bets in 2025.

U.S. Markets Slip on Mixed Economic Data; Asia-Pacific Gains, Europe Mixed

Wall Street ended mixed as retail sales rose but consumer sentiment weakened, inflation expectations jumped and sectoral stocks showed sharp divergences. The Dow inched up 34.86 points (0.1%) to 44,946.12, the S&P 500 fell 18.74 points (0.3%) to 6,449.80 and the Nasdaq slid 87.69 points (0.4%) to 21,622.98. The broader markets weakened after a mixed batch of U.S. economic data created uncertainty around the economic outlook and interest rates. The Commerce Department reported that retail sales rose 0.5% in July, matching expectations, following an upwardly revised 0.9% gain in June. However, sentiment took a hit as the University of Michigan reported an unexpected deterioration in consumer confidence for August. This contrast between steady retail activity and weakening sentiment has added to market caution. Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers, retail sales rose by 0.3% in July after growing by 0.8% in June. The increase in ex-auto sales also matched expectations. Meanwhile, the University of Michigan said its consumer sentiment index fell to 58.6 in August from 61.7 in July. The year-ahead inflation expectations jumped to 4.9% in August from 4.5 in July, reflecting increases across multiple demographic groups and all three political affiliations. Long-run inflation expectations also surged to 3.9% in August from 3.4% in July, rebounding following three straight months of decreases. Labor Department released a separate report showing import prices in the U.S. increased by more than expected in the month of July, while the Federal Reserve released a report showing a slight pullback by industrial production in July. Semiconductor stocks turned in some of the market's worst performances on the day, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index tumbling by 2.3%. Banking stocks were considerably weak, as reflected by the 2% slump by the KBW Bank Index. Oil service and steel stocks too became notably weak while healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotechnology stocks strong moved to the upwards. Asia-Pacific stocks moved mostly higher. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index surged by 1.7% to a record closing high while China's Shanghai Composite Index advanced by 0.8%. The major European markets turned in a mixed performance on the day while the French CAC 40 Index climbed by 0.7%, the German DAX Index edged down by 0.1% and the U.K.'s FTSE 100 Index fell by 0.4%. In the bond market, treasuries are extending the downward move seen in the previous session. As a result, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note which moves opposite of its price, rose 3.5 bps to 4.32%.
