Prasarana rolls out 310 new diesel buses to boost Klang Valley, Penang services

The Star14-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) has deployed 310 additional diesel buses to enhance public transport services in the Klang Valley and Penang starting Monday (July 14).
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that this marks Prasarana's final procurement of diesel buses, aligning with the government's shift towards a more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and low-carbon public transport system.
"As the country's primary public transport operator, Prasarana plays a crucial role in delivering safe, efficient, and reliable bus and train services. With the addition of these new buses, I am confident that service quality will continue to improve, offering greater comfort, safety, and accessibility to the public," he said on Monday.
He added that the initiative under the 2025 Bus Replacement programme is part of Prasarana's long-term strategy to replace aging assets and enhance operational capabilities, in line with the ministry and the Malaysian government's vision to strengthen the country's public transport system.
Loke said this in his speech at the launch of the new diesel bus ceremony, which was also attended by Land Public Transport Agency director-general, Datuk Azlan Shah Al Bakri; Prasarana Group president and chief executive officer (CEO), Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah; and Rapid Bus chairman, Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali.
Loke said that all 310 diesel buses, manufactured by Higer, will be deployed in stages on selected routes, particularly in densely populated areas with high passenger demand, to provide more frequent and user-friendly services.
He added that Higer was chosen following a comprehensive evaluation, based on technical performance, safety, and reliability.
"Although these buses are imported from China, all components are fully assembled in Johor, supporting the government's technology transfer agenda and contributing to the growth of the local automotive industry. Beyond the technical advantages, this move also helps build local expertise and create job opportunities for Malaysians," he added.
"These buses comply with Euro 5 emission standards, one of the world's strictest benchmarks for controlling pollutants such as nitrogen oxide (NOx). This will contribute to improved air quality, particularly in major urban centres.
He added that his ministry is preparing for a full transition to electric buses by 2037. The introduction of these diesel buses, he noted, not only expands the current fleet but also signals the start of phasing them out, in line with the country's sustainability goals.
Loke also reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to advancing Malaysia's public transport sector through environmentally friendly initiatives and sustainable technology.
He said that this aligns with Prasarana's efforts to support national policies, such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) 2021-2030.
"I am very proud of Prasarana's strong commitment to supporting these initiatives in a strategic and effective manner, including the development of charging infrastructure, technical training, and maintenance, all of which are actively underway," he said.
He also urged both public and private sectors to continue collaborating to elevate public transport as the preferred choice for Malaysians.
In addition, Loke expressed his appreciation to Mohd Azharuddin, who concluded his term of service today, acknowledging his significant contributions to the nation's transport sector, and Prasarana's transformation.
"Over the past two to three years, we've seen many improvements, particularly in train operations under Rapid Rail and bus services under Rapid Bus," he added. - Bernama

MACC to seek forfeiture of over RM169mil from Ismail Sabri

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court has set 1 October to hear an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to forfeit more than RM169mil in cash belonging to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Sessions Court Judge Suzana Husin set the date during case management on Tuesday. Lawyer Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, representing Ismail Sabri, told the court that the respondent needed more time to reply to the application. The court instructed the respondent to file an affidavit by 13 August and the prosecution to file an affidavit-in-reply by 3 September. Deputy Public Prosecutors Ifa Sirrhu Samsudin and Alis Izzati Azurin Rusdi appeared for the prosecution. On 7 July, the MACC, represented by the deputy public prosecutor as the applicant, filed the application naming Ismail Sabri's former political secretary Datuk Mohammad Anuar Mohd Yunus and the former Prime Minister himself as the first and second respondents. In the application, the Commission seeks a court order to forfeit cash seized from the first respondent for the Malaysian government. This includes RM14,772,150 in Malaysian currency; SGD6,132,350 in Singapore Dollars, USD1,461,400 in US Dollars, CHF3mil in Swiss Francs, EUR12,164,150 in Euros, JPY363,000,000 in Japanese Yen, GBP50,250 in British Pound, NZD44,600 in New Zealand Dollars, AED34,750,000 in Emirati Dirham, and AUD352,850 in Australian Dollars. The application was made under Section 41(1) of the MACC Act 2009 after it was determined that the money kept by Mohammad Anuar belonged to Ismail Sabri and was linked to an offence under Section 36(2) of the same Act. The MACC also applied for any other court orders deemed suitable by the court.

Egg subsidy cut saves gov't RM135m over three months

KUALA LUMPUR: The government expects to save RM135 million over three months following the reduction in egg subsidies from 10 sen to five sen per egg, effective since May 1. The move precedes the complete removal of price controls on August 1. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the subsidy cut reduces government spending by RM45 million monthly. He assured that egg supply remains stable, with market prices staying reasonable. 'As of July 2, estimated monthly production was 1.75 billion eggs, while domestic demand is around 1.06 billion. This leaves a surplus of about 690 million eggs, some of which are exported,' he said in the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to Pekan MP Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali, who inquired about the savings from the subsidy adjustment and its effect on prices and living costs. Mohamad added that the subsidy reduction and eventual removal will not disrupt the egg industry, which is benefiting from lower chicken feed costs. The government plans to redirect funds to more impactful public programmes. He noted that egg inflation dropped by 5.3 per cent in May, though not all egg grades saw equal price adjustments under the new subsidy system. To ensure stability, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry will collaborate with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to monitor supply and prevent profiteering. - Bernama

Tariff talks progressing, M'sia reluctant on some areas

Despite ongoing negotiations to reduce tariff pressures from the US, Putrajaya is reluctant to meet certain demands made by Washington. According to a Bloomberg report today, the Malaysian government is hesitant to meet the US government's demand for an extension of tax breaks on American electric vehicles (EV), a reduction of foreign shareholding limits in the power and financial sectors, and a cut in subsidies for local fisherfolk, who are a major vote bank as they are predominantly Malays.
