Egg subsidy cut saves gov't RM135m over three months
The move precedes the complete removal of price controls on August 1.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the subsidy cut reduces government spending by RM45 million monthly.
He assured that egg supply remains stable, with market prices staying reasonable.
'As of July 2, estimated monthly production was 1.75 billion eggs, while domestic demand is around 1.06 billion. This leaves a surplus of about 690 million eggs, some of which are exported,' he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to Pekan MP Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali, who inquired about the savings from the subsidy adjustment and its effect on prices and living costs.
Mohamad added that the subsidy reduction and eventual removal will not disrupt the egg industry, which is benefiting from lower chicken feed costs.
The government plans to redirect funds to more impactful public programmes.
He noted that egg inflation dropped by 5.3 per cent in May, though not all egg grades saw equal price adjustments under the new subsidy system.
To ensure stability, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry will collaborate with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to monitor supply and prevent profiteering. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has introduced proactive measures to fine-tune and implement targeted sales and service tax (SST) exemptions for eligible construction projects, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan ( pic ) said these exemptions include construction services related to residential buildings and public facilities such as places of worship, public toilets and recreational parks. 'The government recognises the importance of ensuring that the construction sector is not adversely affected by the implementation of SST. 'Therefore, we have taken steps to provide exemptions for specific categories of projects deemed eligible,' he said on Monday (Jul 28). Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS-Tanjong Manis) asked about the types of construction projects that are exempt from SST, and the ministry's approach to ensure that ongoing developments are not disrupted. Ahmad said certain business-to-business (B2B) activities are subject to specific conditions. For example, while main contractors may be subject to SST, subcontractors involved in projects valued below RM1.5mil are exempt. Additionally, he said essential construction materials such as cement, gravel and sand remain zero-rated for sales tax as part of the government's effort to support the sector. He also said there are currently no plans to increase the SST threshold, which will remain unchanged. 'There have been no discussions to raise it to RM3mil,' he said. On project timelines, he stressed that the ministry does not tolerate delays. 'We do not like late work. After two or three extensions of time (EOT), the companies involved will be fined daily. 'Once they are penalised, they will not be awarded future projects,' he said.

King appoints Wan Ahmad Farid as new Chief Justice of Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, officially appointed Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh as the new Chief Justice in a ceremony held at Istana Negara. The 62-year-old took his oath of office and loyalty at the Small Throne Room, marking the beginning of his tenure as the nation's top judicial officer. Wan Ahmad Farid, previously a Court of Appeal judge, also received his instrument of appointment as a Federal Court Judge.
