KRS dam sees significant rise in water level
Mandya: Thanks to copious rainfall in Kodagu district, the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam is witnessing a significant inflow of water, with the water level reaching 95.3 feet on Wednesday—a substantial rise compared to 83 feet recorded during the same period last year.
The maximum capacity of the dam is 124.8 feet.
Officials report that if the current rain continues in the catchment areas, the water level is expected to cross 100 feet within the next three to four days—a milestone usually reached only by the end of June or in July. During the last three days, due to heavy rainfall in Kodagu and Mysuru, the dam received a good amount of water, with an increase of more than 6 feet. The inflow, which was 150 cusecs on Saturday, jumped to 26,424 cusecs at 8am on Wednesday.
The rain will help Karnataka meet its requirement of 192 tmc Cauvery water release to Tamil Nadu from June to May. The healthy level will also take care of agricultural and drinking water needs in Bengaluru and Mysuru cities.
An official said if the rain continues for another three to four days, the dam's water level will cross 100 feet. Last year, the
KRS dam
crossed 100 feet on July 5. The consistent rain in Kodagu has significantly boosted inflow into the dam, marking an early and promising start to monsoon season in the region.

Severe heatwave hits Pakistan's Punjab, temperatures touch 50 deg C
A severe heatwave has gripped Pakistan's Punjab province, with temperatures soaring up to 50 degrees Celsius in some districts, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Wednesday. The heatwave is expected to continue for the next 48 to 72 hours. Bhakkar, Noorpur Thal, Gujra-nwala, Hafizabad, Layyah and Mandi Bahauddin experienced extreme temperatures ranging between 48 deg C and 49 deg C on Tuesday and Wednesday. In Lahore, the mercury touched 45°C on Wednesday. The southwest monsoon, which has remained stalled since May 29, is likely to resume its northward progress by June 14, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and private weather agency Skymet Weather Services. The rain-bearing system is currently active over Mumbai in the west and Sikkim-Sub Himalayan West Bengal in the east. Bay of Bengal systems to strengthen rainfall Meteorologists attribute the expected revival of the monsoon to multiple weather systems forming over the Bay of Bengal. GP Sharma, president of Skymet Weather Services, said two monsoon systems, including one that is still developing, will likely reinvigorate rainfall where the monsoon has already arrived and help push it further north and west. 'A cyclonic circulation has formed over west-central Bay of Bengal, and may bring rain to coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Karnataka. These include most places in northern Madhya Pradesh, as well as several locations in west Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and southwest Uttar Pradesh. 'Further progression of the monsoon will result from the westward movement of the existing weather system along the Odisha coast,' an IMD official said. Another official highlighted the presence of an east-west trough from north Tamil Nadu to the south Maharashtra coast. 'This shear zone roughly along latitude 15°N is also an indicator of monsoon revival.
