Muda's future with Syed Saddiq hinges on court decision tomorrow
PETALING JAYA : Muda's future with its former president, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, will depend on the outcome of his appeal against his conviction and sentence for corruption and money laundering charges, which will be announced tomorrow.
Acting Muda president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz told FMT that although the Muar MP had not held the party's presidency since he stepped down in 2023, he remained a key figure in Muda due to his role as its founder and sole representative in Parliament.
Amira also said that Muda currently has no plans to appoint a new president as party elections are expected to be held soon.
'For now, there is nothing urgent that requires us to fill the position. We'll leave it to the members to decide,' she said.
'If everything goes smoothly, it will be up to Syed Saddiq to decide whether or not he wants to run again (for president).'
Syed Saddiq was convicted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court of abetting in criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of assets and money laundering in November 2023.
The former youth and sports minister was sentenced to seven years' jail, fined RM10 million and ordered to be given two strokes of the rotan. The sentences have been stayed pending an appeal to the Court of Appeal.
He announced later that he would temporarily step down as Muda president and would not be involved in the party's decision-making processes.

Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire: Malaysia-led observers on ground from tomorrow
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysia-led Interim Observer Team (IOT) will be deployed starting tomorrow to monitor the ceasefire arrangement in conflict zones along the Thailand-Cambodia border. Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said the team is made up of defence attachés from Bangkok and Phnom Penh. "During the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, both sides agreed to form this Interim Observer Team (IOT). "The Bangkok team yesterday briefed 75 senior Thai officers on the necessary measures. "In Phnom Penh, tomorrow and the day after, there will be site visits to the designated conflict zones. "The IOT's main mandate is to ensure the ceasefire system is upheld and to compile reports from both sides on any violations. "This is their duty to investigate," he told a press conference today. Nizam said he had also asked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to send letters to the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia for the next stage, which would allow the Asean Observer Team (AOT) to enter conflict areas in both countries. "The AOT, made up of Asean members, will be on the ground to ensure and monitor that there are no violations of the ceasefire arrangement. "This task is challenging because the conflict areas stretch about 840km along the border, and for this task, logistical support will be provided by the United States," he said. According to the Agreed Minutes of the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting issued after the Extraordinary GBC Meeting on Aug 7, both sides must avoid unprovoked firing towards the other's positions or troops, which may escalate tensions.

Anwar denies telling MCMC to investigate Muhyiddin over RON95 subsidy row, but won't apologise pending probe
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today clarified that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was not instructed to investigate Pagoh Member of Parliament Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin over the recent RON95 targeted subsidy issue. Instead, the Prime Minister said MCMC was asked to verify the authenticity of the sources that were referred to in relation to the matter. 'I asked MCMC for clarification. Some misunderstood and claimed that MCMC is being asked to investigate Pagoh. No. Let me clarify. I said that the information came from one, two, or three sources. I told them (MCMC), please investigate these sources. 'If the sources are found to be unreliable, then the statement (based on them) is not valid. But let's wait for MCMC's findings first,' he said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today. Anwar said this in reply to a supplementary question by Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) on whether or not he would apologise to Muhyiddin pertaining to the issue. In the Dewan Rakyat last week, Muhyiddin, who is also the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, demanded an apology from Anwar for accusing him of defending foreigners over the RON95 targeted subsidy initiative. Addressing the matter further, Anwar said he would not hesitate to offer his apology to Muhyiddin, but only after MCMC completes its verification process regarding the sources of the information. 'I have no issue with apologising. But we're still waiting for confirmation. One source has already been found to be inaccurate. If the remaining two are also found to be false, I have no problem apologising. 'If MCMC confirms it, I will clarify and apologise to Pagoh MP, but let's wait for it first,' he said. Meanwhile, on the issue of legal immunity, Anwar explained that his application to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court was regarding the interpretation of whether an action against the Prime Minister could be considered frivolous, vexatious or an abuse of process. 'Immunity means that it cannot be disputed. The application is for the court to decide in cases whether it is possible for anyone to attack the Prime Minister in a frivolous and vexatious manner that interferes with our field of work. 'That is what the application is all about, and it is up to the court. The court makes the decision, not the Prime Minister,' he said in reply to Chaa Kee Chin (PH-Rasah), who asked him to clarify the allegation that he was applying for legal immunity from civil and criminal cases in court. — Bernama

Lorry driver pleads not guilty to trying to kill cop by running him over in KL
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — A lorry driver pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to attempting to kill a policeman by running him over with a four-wheel drive vehicle, causing injuries. Muhammad Farhan Baharudin, 34, was charged with committing the offence against Corporal Mohamad Sallehin Ab Rahman, 35, resulting in the victim suffering an abrasion wound on his right knee, bruising on his right elbow and bruising on the right lower chest wall — injuries which could have been fatal. The offence was allegedly committed at the Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway (AKLEH) exit to Jalan Tun Razak at 9.05am on August 8 this year. The charge, under Section 307 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine, or up to 20 years' imprisonment if injury is caused, upon conviction. Judge Izralizam Sanusi allowed bail at RM8,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to report to a nearby police station once a month. The court set October 6 for mention. Deputy public prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Mohd Fikah Sanusi represented the accused. — Bernama
