Sarzameen director Kayoze Irani addresses negative reviews, admits he'd alter Ibrahim Ali Khan's introduction: ‘People were forgiving'

Indian Express4 days ago
Ibrahim Ali Khan's second film, Sarzameen, premiered last month on JioHotstar, and much like his debut film Nadaaniyan, it was met with significant criticism from both audiences and critics. Directed by Kayoze Irani, son of veteran actor Boman Irani, the film has sparked a conversation online about its narrative and performances. Addressing the mixed reception in a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Kayoze shared his thoughts on the feedback and what he's taken away from the experience.
'I'm extremely happy with the audience reaction to the film. I think that the (viewership) numbers are doing very well. The overall audience perception and the feedback that I've been getting are good. There have been some criticisms. There have been some reviews that are critical, which is fair. What is important is to learn from it and move forward, but I'm genuinely overwhelmed. I feel that if it's managed to touch a few people, I can't be happier than that,' he said.

He continued, 'These are reviewers whom I respect,' adding, 'Ideally, you want every review to be five stars, and you want the box office collection to be unheard of. But this will not be my only film. There's something that I can learn from it, and I will apply that in the next one.' In the same conversation, Kayoze acknowledged the film's flaws but said he feels encouraged by the audience's acceptance. 'Are there a few loopholes in the film? Maybe! Are there a few things that could have been done differently? Maybe. But the important thing is that the film worked on a larger level, and they were forgiving of a few of the issues.'
Reflecting on what he would change about the movie if given the chance, Irani said, 'One thing that I would have done differently with Sarzameen was bringing Ibrahim into the film a little earlier, and I would have had more of the cat-and-mouse chase before he is discovered. These are the two things I would have done differently.' Set in Kashmir, Sarzameen follows the tense emotional journey of an Indian Army officer who discovers that his estranged son has joined a militant group. Ibrahim plays the role of the young militant, while Prithviraj Sukumaran portrays his father. Kajol also stars in the film in a role that has drawn some criticism online for its writing and execution.

The rumoured ex-couple was spotted at the premiere of Mouni Roy's new political thriller Salakaar, both dressed in coordinated black outfits that immediately caught attention. Disha Patani turned heads in a sizzling black shirt with unbuttoned detailing that added an effortlessly sultry vibe. She paired it with ripped micro denim shorts that showcased her toned legs, cinched with a chunky brown belt. Completing the bold ensemble were edgy black ankle boots and a sleek crossbody bag. He added a pair of aviators to the ensemble, giving it a stylish, understated edge. Though they arrived separately, the twinning colour palette didn't go unnoticed. While Disha and Tiger have never publicly confirmed their relationship or their split, reports suggested they broke up around mid-2022. Despite the apparent breakup, Disha continues to share a warm bond with Tiger's family. She often interacts with his mother Ayesha Shroff and sister Krishna Shroff on social media, and even received a sweet birthday wish from Ayesha earlier this year. At the Salakaar premiere, which took place ahead of the show's Independence Day release on JioHotstar, the former flames remained cordial and made solo appearances. The series, inspired by the life of national security advisor Ajit Doval, stars Mouni Roy and Naveen Kasturia. Tiger Shroff had previously dodged dating questions in an interview with Times Now, jokingly saying, 'Meri ek hi Disha hai life mein, aur wo hai mera kaam," cheekily avoiding giving away anything on his love life. 'Why is Varamahalakshmi celebrated?' Bengaluru shop's ChatGPT-inspired ad goes viral; here's why

In Bengaluru, where new ideas are always buzzing, a local saree shop has found a creative way to grab attention ahead of the Varamahalakshmi festival. Instead of using the usual ads, the shop put up a display that looks just like a ChatGPT conversation screen– and it's got everyone talking on social media. An ad that speaks the language of today's audience The ad copies the look of a chat window from a conversational AI, with the question, 'Why is Varamahalakshmi festival celebrated?' This clever twist has caught people's attention and shows how Bengaluru brands are using modern digital trends to stay relatable and connect with today's audience. Sharing the image on X (formerly Twitter), one user noted, 'Local saree shop in Bangalore using ChatGPT mobile interface for an ad is a first. Earlier, it would be the Google search bar design. Just Bangalore things, I guess.' This remark, according to the post, highlights how Bengaluru continues to lead in blending tradition with cutting-edge trends. Timing aligned with cultural rhythms According to a Hindustan Times report, with the festival approaching on August 8 – a time when saree shopping is at its peak in South India– the shop's campaign couldn't be better timed. Using a conversational AI style adds a fun, modern twist to the festive shopping buzz. Flexible payment options complement the campaign The store's modern thinking isn't just limited to its marketing. As one user shared on X, it also offers a scheme where customers 'pay for 11 months, get 1 month free' – making it easier for people to shop during the festive season without feeling the financial pinch, according to the HT report. Echoing Bengaluru's tech-savvy spirit According to the report, this campaign has drawn comparisons to other viral Bengaluru moments, such as an image of an auto driver streaming a Naval Ravikant podcast while navigating the city's traffic. As one social media comment put it, 'Only in Bengaluru can a saree shop and an auto driver both go viral for tech-savvy moments.' This captures the city's unique blend of tradition, technology, and everyday hustle. Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
