Hurricane Iona is "rapidly weakening" well to the south of Hawaii, and more weakening is expected on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory late Tuesday night.
In an advisory issued at 11 p.m. local time on Tuesday, July 29, the NHC said Iona had maximum sustained winds around 105 mph with higher gusts. The hurricane reached maximum sustained winds around 125 mph on Tuesday, reaching Category 3 status on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale.
Iona is expected to continue moving west, although further weakening is expected Wednesday, followed by "little change in strength" Wednesday night and Thursday, hurricane center forecasters said.

NHC also tracking Tropical Storm Keli, 3 other disturbances in the Pacific
In addition to Iona, the hurricane center is also tracking Tropical Storm Keli and three other tropical disturbances in the Pacific.
Keli is moving rapidly westward and that motion is expected to continue during the next day or so, according to the NHC, with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph with higher gusts. Forecasters said Keli is expected to weaken to a tropical depression by late Wednesday and dissipate by Thursday.
Also in the Pacific, the hurricane center said late Tuesday night, July 29, an area of low pressure located about 1,150 miles east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands "remain limited and have changed little since this morning."
Forecasters said if persistent showers and thunderstorms re-develop during the next day or so, a short-lived tropical depression could still form, as the system is expected to enter the Central Pacific basin shortly. The NHC gives this system, labeled as EP98, a 60% chance of formation through the next 48 hours.
The hurricane center also said it is keeping tabs on a trough of low pressure located several hundred miles southwest of the southwestern coast of Mexico that is producing "a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms."
Environmental conditions appear conducive for development, the NHC said, and a tropical depression is likely to form during the next day or two while the system moves west-northwestward around 15 mph, remaining "well offshore of the southwestern coast of Mexico."
Hurricane center forecasters give this system, labeled as EP99, an 80% chance of formation through the next 48 hours.
Lastly, an area of low pressure is forecast to develop well south of southern or southwestern Mexico late this week, the hurricane center said. Environmental conditions appear conducive for some gradual development of this system and a tropical depression could develop over the weekend or early next week, the NHC said July 29. The system has a 60% chance of formation through the next seven days.
How do hurricanes form?
Hurricanes are born in the tropics, above warm water. Clusters of thunderstorms can develop over the ocean when water temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If conditions are right, the clusters swirl into a storm known as a tropical wave or tropical depression.
A tropical depression becomes a named tropical storm once its sustained wind speeds reach 39 miles per hour. When its winds reach 74 mph, the storm officially becomes a hurricane.
Prepare now for hurricanes
Delaying potentially life-saving preparations could mean waiting until it's too late. "Get your disaster supplies while the shelves are still stocked, and get that insurance checkup early, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period," NOAA recommends.

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Ivo formed Wednesday in the eastern Pacific Ocean and was expected to bring rain and rough surf to parts of Mexico's southwest coast, forecasters said. Ivo had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) and was centered about 195 miles (310 kilometers) south-southeast of Acapulco, according to the National Hurricane Center based in Miami. Forecasters said Ivo is expected to be near hurricane strength by the end of the week as it spends a few days moving offshore, and generally parallel to the coast, before turning west away from land. No coastal watches or warnings were in effect as Ivo moves west-northwest at 22 mph (35 kph). But large ocean swells kicked up by Ivo could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents, the hurricane center said. The storm also threatened flash flooding and was expected to dump 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters) of rain with isolated totals of up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) in spots around parts of the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacan and southwestern portions of Oaxaca through Saturday. Ivo was the second tropical storm in the eastern Pacific, joining Tropical Storm Henriette. On Wednesday, Henriette had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) and was located 1,555 miles (2,505 kilometers) east of Hilo, Hawaii, and moving west. In the Atlantic, Dexter remained a tropical storm but was forecast to become a powerful extra-tropical cyclone.

Numerous states along the United States Eastern Seaboard are anticipating torrential rain and other impacts this week as National Hurricane Center (NHC) meteorologists monitor a disturbance off the East Coast that could strengthen into Tropical Storm Erin by the end of the week. Why It Matters The NHC is currently tracking three systems in the Atlantic Ocean: Tropical Storm Dexter, which is currently moving further out to sea, and two disturbances, one in the central tropical Atlantic and one brewing much closer to the U.S. Each of these disturbances has a moderate chance at strengthening into a tropical storm in the coming days. Even if the system closest to the U.S. doesn't strengthen into a tropical storm, it is still expected to bring tropical rain and wind impacts to at least two states. What To Know This week, AccuWeather shared a map showing the risk of tropical impacts over the coming days. The coasts of South Carolina and North Carolina faced a medium risk of tropical rain and wind in the coming days, the highest of the Eastern Seaboard. The Virginia coast faces a low risk, whereas Maryland north through Maine faces a near-zero risk. AccuWeather AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva told Newsweek that the system off the Southeast coast originally looked as though it could curve toward the U.S., but now looks as though it will run parallel to the coast. Despite moving inland, a wet pattern accompanied by thunderstorms is still expected across the Southeast to end this week. AccuWeather is forecasting additional heavy rain across the Southeast, including states like South Carolina and North Carolina, areas that have already seen several inches of rainfall this month. Further south, Georgia and Florida face a low risk. Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi face a low risk of such impacts from a separate system in the Gulf monitored by AccuWeather meteorologists that could evolve between August 10 and 12. Weather experts have issued repeated warnings this summer that peak Atlantic hurricane season doesn't typically hit until September, urging people to take precautionary action, such as stocking up on emergency supplies and ensuring they have proper insurance in place, before a storm forms. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting from 13 to 19 named storms for this year's Atlantic hurricane season, with six to 10 strengthening into hurricanes and three to five into major hurricanes. What People Are Saying AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva told Newsweek: "In terms of thunderstorm activity, there's not a whole lot going on, but I think that's going to change here in the next day or so. It still looks like it's going to be a wet pattern overall across the Southeast through late week, especially closer to the coast." The NHC in its most recent update about the disturbance closest to the Southeastern U.S.: "A weak area of low pressure has formed from a surface trough, several hundred miles off the coast of the southeastern United States. However, this system is currently producing only limited shower and thunderstorm activity and development is likely to be slow to occur during the next few days. Thereafter, environmental conditions could become a little more conducive for development. A tropical depression could still form by this weekend as the low initially drifts westward before turning northward to northeastward by the weekend." What Happens Next The disturbance closest to the U.S. has a 10 percent chance of strengthening into a tropical storm in the next 48 hours. It has a 40 percent chance of doing so in the next seven days. NHC officials will continue to monitor the system, although there are no hurricane or tropical storm alerts in place for the U.S. as of Wednesday morning.
