Anwar: Finance Ministry to enhance pondok education system to meet current needs
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move is crucial to ensure students are not only grounded in religious knowledge but also equipped to face contemporary challenges,
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, gave his assurance that the traditional religious syllabus will remain intact. However, it will be complemented with elements such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), technology, and artificial intelligence (AI).
'We will not interfere with the existing syllabus of pondok institutions, but we will incorporate new components such as TVET and AI.
'It is not about changing the system, but to complement and enhance it with elements that reflect current demands,' he said during a gathering with staff of the Prime Minister's Department here today.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the government's efforts to strengthen pondok institutions through upgraded infrastructure and an improved curriculum should not be politicised, as they are sincere initiatives to ensure students are not left behind in the national mainstream.
He said the move is made purely in the public interest, without any political agenda.
'Insya-Allah, I will contact Syeikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah (Jabhah Pondok Kelantan deputy chairman) to accept his invitation to visit his pondok. This has nothing to do with politics. We should not be so tied to political views that we fail to recognise the greater good,' he said.
As an example, Anwar said the government had already started efforts to empower huffaz (Quran memorisers) by providing TVET education to 12,500 students in their respective institutions
'This is a significant number. Imagine the impact if this approach continues — it would offer our children greater exposure,' he said.
Anwar also commended the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) and its agencies, led by Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, for organising the 2025 Muzakarah Umara' dan Ulama' Pondok Kebangsaan (UMRAN) and Malaysia Bermunajat programmes last Saturday.
He described both events as important platforms for strengthening ties between religious scholars and national leaders in advancing the MADANI policy framework.
'They also serve as a space to hear the views and advice of the ulama, ensuring that efforts to promote Islamic understanding and activities in the country remain in line with Islamic principles,' he said.
Anwar further stressed the importance of upholding values, ethics, and religious understanding while pursuing technological progress for national development.
'While we aim high and embrace modern technology, we must stay grounded.
'We may reach for the skies and master the latest technologies, but without firm roots in our faith, ethics, culture, and religion, that progress will be hollow,' he said. — BERNAMA

"The ongoing humanitarian crisis and genocide in Gaza, the war in Eastern Europe, prolonged conflicts in the Middle East, and the tensions between Thailand and Cambodia all have direct or indirect impacts on Malaysia. KLIA Aerotrain breaks down again after RM456mil upgrade
THE country's Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) faces fresh embarrassment as its newly upgraded aerotrain experienced its second malfunction since resuming operations on July 1, leaving travelers stranded and questioning the effectiveness of the RM456 million renovation project. Social media user @afiqmukhtar highlighted the incident on X (formerly Twitter), sharing images of frustrated passengers walking toward airport exits after the aerotrain failed to transport them between Terminal 1's Main Terminal and Satellite Building. The disgruntled passenger tagged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) in his post, expressing anger over the system's repeated failures despite the massive financial investment. According to China Press, a passenger said that shuttle bus services were deployed to transport passengers during the disruption. The passenger identified only as Zhang mentioned being en route to Hong Kong when the unexpected breakdown occurred. At the of writing MAHB has yet to issue any response to the latest incident. This marks the second major disruption since the aerotrain's highly anticipated return to service, with the first breakdown occurring just one day after the July 1 relaunch. The initial malfunction was initially attributed to a passenger allegedly holding doors open, causing the system to jam. However, MAHB later clarified that water accumulation in the tunnel due to heavy rainfall was the actual cause, necessitating manual clearing operations and safety inspections before services could resume. The aerotrain system, which had been KLIA's primary internal transport link since 1998, was out of service from early 2023, forcing passengers to rely on shuttle buses for connectivity between the main terminal and satellite building used primarily for international flights. The recurring technical issues have raised serious questions about the upgrade project's execution and the system's long-term reliability, particularly given the substantial public investment involved.

PADU data to be used for RON95 targeted subsidy mechanism
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MOF) will fully utilise data from the Central Database Hub (PADU) in the mechanism for the implementation of targeted RON95 subsidies, which is being refined, according to Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. Amir Hamzah, who also carries the duties and functions of Economy Minister, said the system has so far compiled 30.4 million individual profiles, containing information on demographics, locality, socioeconomic status, employment, income, education, vehicle ownership, poverty status, and types of assistance they receive. '... MOF will use the PADU data as a reference point for identifying subsidy will be the first detailed use of PADU data. '...the government is focusing on the use of up-to-date data to enhance the effectiveness of service delivery. For example, the validation and verification of applicant information is crucial to identify eligible recipients accurately and, in turn, reduce errors,' he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. 'To promote data-driven decision making, a PADU data-sharing guideline was developed and distributed to all government agencies on Feb 25. Briefing sessions involving ministries, agencies, state government, and local authorities were also held between February and June this year. 'To date, nine applications (for the use of PADU data) from various agencies have been approved to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of policy implementation and digital service innovation,' he added.
