Govt will consider more financial assistance for uni students, says PM
CYBERJAYA: The government is open to considering adjustments to the budget and reducing prices of goods to help university students struggling with the rising cost of living, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. During a town hall session at the launch of Multimedia University's (MMU) new Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE) faculty, a student had asked whether the government would consider providing an additional RM100 on top of the one-off payment that was previously distributed under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah aid programme. "Recently, I approved the RM100 (Sumbangan Asas Rahmah) for all aged 18 and above. Yes, we can look into this. "But what we have given is a one-off RM100. I know there are needs, and we can consider it in the budget, whatever adjustments we can make," he said. Anwar added that despite ongoing cost-of-living challenges, the prices of fuel, chicken, eggs, and sugar in Malaysia remain significantly lower than in many other countries. "We must accept that. Is it worrying? Yes, it is," he said. "If you ask me what concerns me most as Prime Minister, I remain worried about hardcore poverty, general poverty, and the burdens faced by the people." "That is what we must address as best as we can. But believe me, when we raised the salaries of civil servants recently, ministers, deputy ministers and MPs did not get a pay rise. That is a signal that we have responsibilities," he said. He also stressed that the country's procurement system must be transparent to ensure public funds are used prudently. "That's why I keep stressing governance. If we can implement this, we can save more. "How much has been recovered over the past one to two years by the Inland Revenue Board and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission from funds seized from those who amassed wealth outside the rules and laws? MMU's new FAIE will feature state-of-the-art laboratories to foster creativity and collaboration between students, researchers and industry partners, ensuring graduates remain competitive in the digital economy. The faculty will introduce a new Bachelor of Science (Hons) (Applied AI) programme, a three-year full-time course beginning in July 2025. Existing engineering programmes will also be enhanced with AI components to equip students with advanced technological skills. Applied AI covers technologies such as machine learning and automation to address real-world challenges, including smart healthcare, autonomous vehicles, intelligent farming and personalised digital assistants.

Govt may add RM100 aid for university students in Budget 2026
CYBERJAYA: The government is prepared to evaluate an additional one-off RM100 aid for university students to ease their financial burdens. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the proposal will be reviewed for Budget 2026, set for tabling in October. He addressed the suggestion during the Temu Anwar programme after a student representative from Multimedia University (MMU) raised the issue. Anwar noted that the government had earlier approved RM100 cash aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above. 'I welcome the proposal by the student president and I will give it due consideration for the October budget,' he said. On living costs, Anwar reiterated that essential goods like cooking oil, chicken, eggs, and sugar remain among the region's most affordable. He emphasised that tackling poverty and easing public burdens remain his top priorities as prime minister. 'If asked what issue worries me most, I remain most concerned about hardcore poverty and the people's burdens,' he added. Anwar clarified that recent salary adjustments excluded ministers, deputies, and MPs to prioritise fiscal responsibility. He reaffirmed the need for transparent procurement processes to maximise national savings. The government's anti-leakage measures have reportedly recovered RM4 billion to RM5 billion in misappropriated funds. 'How much has been recovered by the Inland Revenue Board and MACC? It has reached RM4 billion, RM5 billion,' Anwar stated. He stressed that recovered funds are redirected to public welfare rather than political interests. KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd has rolled out new Shariah-compliant business cards, targeting 1,000 new cardholders in the first year with an estimated income projection of RM5 million. The Visa Platinum Business Credit Card-i and Visa Infinite Business Credit Card-i are designed to assist corporate clients, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and government-linked companies (GLCs) in managing their expenses more efficiently while adhering to ethical principles. According to the bank, the initiative supports the goals of the 13th Malaysia Plan, which focuses on SME empowerment, digitalisation, and inclusive economic growth. "The newly launched credit cards are designed to streamline daily operations and reduce administrative burden, offering 2 percent cashback on all spending (capped at RM300 monthly), a profit-free period of up to 30 days, and customisable card usage controls to support different business purposes," it added. Bank Muamalat president and chief executive officer Khairul Kamarudin said the business cards demonstrate the bank's commitment to supporting Malaysian businesses in a changing economy by offering flexible financing and the assurance of Shariah-compliant banking.
