Vizag Metro Rail to Build Two Train Depots, Land Acquisition Underway
The depots are key to running the metro smoothly. They store, repair, and clean trains. They also have offices and space for parking trains.
Each depot needs about 35 to 40 acres of land. The whole first phase of the VMR needs about 100 acres for three routes. The land cost is around ₹890 crore.
Land acquisition is ongoing, with a social impact study (SIA) in progress. About nine acres of private land and 87 acres of government land are needed.
The SIA started on May 30, 2025, to check public interest, land needs, alternatives, and effects on the local food supply.
The AP Metro Rail Corporation stated that the government land near Old Dairy Farm comes from the Visakhapatnam Port, the railways, the Animal Husbandry, and other departments.
APMRC Managing Director N.P. Ramakrishna Reddy said the district is handling land matters and awaits the final SIA report soon.

She pointed out that the KIADB had earlier issued a notice to a private firm holding the land to compensate the original landowners. This could strengthen the private company's hold on the property, potentially affecting the planned Metro depot, multi-modal hub, parking facilities, and other infrastructure in the area.

Multi-modal transport options are also planned for high-density areas to help alleviate traffic congestion. The govt also intends to construct 11 new radial roads linking the Regional Ring Road (RRR) with the Outer Ring Road (ORR), establish a dry port along the Hyderabad–Amaravati Greenfield Highway, and implement a three-tier development model, dividing the state into urban, semi-urban, and rural zones. "Infrastructure development is a key driver of growth," the CM said. The new plan includes a 300–360 km RRR encircling major economic hubs, to be connected by a regional ring rail and supported by dedicated industrial corridors. Development & fiscal stability Funding, he stated, would be secured through low-interest, long-tenure loans—some with repayment periods of up to 35 years—secured in coordination with the Centre and financial institutions. This approach aims to maintain fiscal stability. The proposed triple-sector strategy envisions urban areas within the ORR focusing on the expansion of financial districts, IT hubs, and metro networks; semi-urban areas between the ORR and RRR concentrating on manufacturing and industrial parks; and rural regions beyond the ORR undergoing agricultural modernisation, with enhanced transport and water connectivity. "Real estate is not just land, it is potential and opportunity," Reddy said, encouraging investors and entrepreneurs to play a role in making Telangana a model for development.
