Tensions between India and Pakistan have once again brought doubt over the future of the Asia Cup. A report this week claimed that the BCCI has decided to pull out of all Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tournaments, including the Asia Cup 2025. This comes after India and Pakistan were involved in a military conflict following New Delhi's response to the Pahalgam terror attack with Operation Sindoor.
Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia later clarified that no such discussion has officially happened yet, the rumour has already started raising questions about India's participation in the Men's Asia Cup and Women's Emerging Asia Cup. This is not the first time that India-Pakistan tensions have impacted the tournament.

Here's a look at all the times the ACC Asia Cup was either cancelled, shifted or boycotted due to strained ties between India and Pakistan.
1990–91 Asia Cup: Pakistan pulled out
The 1990-91 Asia Cup tournament was held in India but Pakistan chose not to participate because of political tensions between the two nations. India went on to win the tournament after beating Sri Lanka in the final.

1993 Asia Cup: Cancelled altogether
This 1993 edition of the Asia Cup was fully cancelled due to worsening relations between India and Pakistan. It is the only time when the Asia Cup was cancelled due to India-Pakistan tensions.
2018 Asia Cup: Moved from India to UAE
The 2018 Asia Cup was originally planned to be held in India. But due to political issues with Pakistan, it was shifted to the UAE. India remained the host officially, but all matches were played in neutral venues. India won the title that year too.
2023 Asia Cup: Played in hybrid model
Pakistan was awarded hosting rights of the 2023 Asia Cup but India refused to travel to the country. After many rounds of talks, a hybrid model was agreed upon. India played all their matches in Sri Lanka while Pakistan hosted a few games. India once again went on to win the title.
2025 Asia Cup: Doubt over India's participation
Now in 2025, tensions have resurfaced, and a report suggests the BCCI has informed the ACC about their unwillingness to participate in ACC tournaments under the current chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, who is also a Pakistan government minister. The BCCI has reportedly pulled out of the Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup next month as well.

Although BCCI has denied any final decision and the ACC has also not confirmed anything, fans are concerned if the tournament will be impacted once again.

Rajeev Shukla likely to replace Roger Binny as BCCI President

With the incumbent Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, Roger Binny, set to turn 70 next month, Rajeev Shukla is likely to take over as the interim chief for a period of three months. According to the BCCI constitution, an office-bearer cannot hold a position beyond the age of 70, which makes Binny, a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning team, ineligible for the role after July 19. Shukla, who is currently the vice-president of the Board and the senior-most office-bearer in the present regime, will oversee the president's duties until a new chief is elected. Shukla has held the position of BCCI vice-president since late 2020. He also served as the secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association until 2017 and was the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) until 2018.

Rajeev Shukla likely to replace Roger Binny as acting BCCI president as 1983 World Cup-winner nears age limit: Sources

ANI Updated 2 Jun 2025, 11:33 AM IST The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla is likely to become the acting president of the board in July after the current president Roger Binny, touches the age of 70 on July 19 this year, as per sources. The 65-year-old Shukla will first get the acting president role for three months. With the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September, the month he would turn 66, Shukla could stand for the post of full-time president in the elections, added the sources. Binny was elected as the 36th president of BCCI in October 2022, replacing ex-Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who completed his three-year tenure. Notably, Binny was the only candidate to have filed a nomination for the top post. During his presidency, India won two white-ball titles, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He also introduced the Women's Premier League (WPL), a women's franchise cricket league on the lines of highly-successful IPL. It was during his presidency that several steps related to proper strengthening and prioritising domestic cricket with help of better incentives, pay and having seniors participate in domestic tournaments took place. Binny, a bowling all-rounder, has represented India in 27 Test matches and 72 ODIs. He took 47 wickets in Tests and scored 830 runs with five half-centuries. In 72 ODIs, he took 77 wickets and scored 629 runs with a half-century. The right-arm pacer bagged 47 wickets in tests while also picking 77 in ODIs. He was a crucial contributor to India's first-ever World Cup victory, being the highest wicket-taker for India in the 1983 World Cup with 18 wickets. Binny has previously served as a member of the BCCI selection committee.

Rajeev Shukla May Become Acting BCCI President, Likely To Take Charge From...

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice President Rajeev Shukla will become the acting President of the cricket body after Roger Binny's tenure ends, according to sources. Shukla will become acting President for three months from July. With the Annual General Meeting (AGM) taking place in September, the sources said that he can compete in the elections for the post of full-time president. Roger Binny was elected BCCI President in 2022 as he succeeded Sourav Ganguly. At that time, Binny, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, was the only person to file a nomination. During Binny's presidency, India won two white-ball titles, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Coming to Rajeev Shukla, the Rajya Sabha MP from the Congress party has previously also served as the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Most recently, C K Khanna had served as the acting BCCI president from 2017 to 2019 during the tenure of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators that governed the board for 33 months. Binny was the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association before taking charge of the world's richest cricket board three years ago. Counted among the greats of the game, the former all-rounder was a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team under Kapil Dev. He later went on to coach the India Under-19 team that won the 2000 edition of ICC World Cup for that age group. (With agency inputs)
