Chinese actress Zhao Wei's former Hong Kong home fails to sell at an auction

A luxury duplex flat once owned by Chinese actress Vicki Zhao Wei and her former husband, Huang Youlong, did not find a buyer at an auction on Wednesday even after the current owner priced the property significantly below what the couple paid 13 years ago.

The reserve price for the property was set at HK$49 million (US$6.3 million), a 32 per cent discount to the HK$72 million Zhao and Huang paid in 2012, according to filings from the Land Registry.
The 3,494 sq ft, four-bedroom unit on the 38th and 39th floors and two car parking spaces at The Westminster Terrace in Tsuen Wan, New Territories, did not receive any bids at an auction conducted by AA Property Auctioneers.
Less than 10 of the 52 properties, including parking spaces, residential units and office spaces that were put up for auction, were sold. Some 80 people turned up for the auction.

'As the property market has been stabilised after the government removed all curbs in February last year, we have seen more transactions,' said Peter Au, managing director at AA Property Auctioneers.

33-year-old King Parrot Group shuts 9 restaurants in Hong Kong

The 33-year-old King Parrot Group, a well-known name in Hong Kong's restaurant industry, shut nine eateries on Friday, owing more than 100 staff over HK$1 million (US$127,440), according to a union. The group, which ran more than 20 restaurants at its peak, informed staff of its decision to close the nine outlets with immediate effect and paid outstanding wages on the spot, according to Nerine Yip Lau-ching, general secretary of the Hotels, Food and Beverage Employees Association. 'The employer only settled their outstanding wages for May and June without mentioning their other entitlements, such as one month pay in lieu of notice, the severance payment and their holiday pay,' she said. 'Over 100 employees, with a service length ranging from months to 15 years, have been seeking help from us. We estimate that they are owed over HK$1 million in unpaid wages. We call on the affected workers to come to us for assistance.' Hong Kong has been hit with a wave of shop closures due to residents heading north to spend. Last month, 33-year-old congee restaurant chain Ocean Empire Food Shop shut down, owing more than 100 staff wages in excess of HK$15 million. The Labour Department said it was 'very concerned' about the move by King Parrot Group and called for affected employees to seek its assistance, adding they could go to the branch office of the Labour Relations Division for inquiry.

Chinese social media giant RedNote opens Hong Kong office, its first outside mainland

Chinese social media giant RedNote has opened an office in Hong Kong, its first outside mainland China, a move the city's finance chief hopes will provide a boost to local businesses and the platform's international expansion. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po said on Saturday that he had personally invited the company, also known as Xiaohongshu, to set up a base in the city. 'When I visited Shanghai at the end of last year, I made a special visit to Xiaohongshu's headquarters,' Chan wrote on social media. 'I was deeply impressed by the team's youthful vitality and innovative spirit, and I invited them to Hong Kong to use it as a base to develop their international business.' Chan was officiating an opening ceremony, where he said the company's presence in Hong Kong would foster closer connections with the city's community, offering new perspectives and channels for local businesses in product design, marketing and promotion. Hong Kong delegation promotes city as higher education hub in US and UK

The head of a committee overseeing funding for Hong Kong's public universities has led a delegation to the United States and the United Kingdom to promote the city as a destination for higher education. James Tang Tuck-hong, secretary general of the University Grants Committee, attended a conference in San Diego, California, on May 25, before flying to the UK for another forum in Birmingham. 'During the visit, Professor Tang also met with senior management and prominent scholars from top-tier higher education institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom to exchange views on the latest developments in higher education,' a spokesman for the committee said. Tang's visits came as the government pushes ahead with its 'Study in Hong Kong' campaign, launched in last year's policy address, which targets overseas students, especially those from Southeast Asia and countries under the Belt and Road Initiative. The campaign was launched after city authorities doubled the quota for non-local student intake in the city's eight publicly funded universities to 40 per cent in September last year. After the increase, about 30,000 places are available for non-locals. During the delegation's visit to the US, Tang spoke at the NAFSA Annual Conference and Expo about the strengths of the city's higher education sector and the opportunities it could present to overseas students.
