St Johnstone: Contrasting news for Drey Wright and Zach Mitchell
Drey Wright's season is over, St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari has confirmed.
But the Perth club's Mr Versatile, who sustained ankle ligament damage earlier this month, has already done his part in the Premiership survival battle.
And Valakari believes the Englishman's example is one his team-mates need to follow if they are to complete the job of preserving their top-flight status without him.
'Drey is walking without the boot,' Valakari reported.
'He had an MRI scan yesterday, which will show the full damage (to the ankle he injured in the league victory over Celtic).
'We'll get those results soon, but he is definitely out for the season.
'Without him, we wouldn't even be in this position.
'He has been so versatile to fill these gaps everywhere.
'In every position he has done well for us, and he has played a lot of minutes.
'We will need other players to have Drey's attitude over the next five games.
'Every time I took him into my office and said: 'Look Drey, you had a really good game on Saturday but this time I need you somewhere else' he was like: 'Don't worry gaffer, I will do it'.
'That's the kind of mentality we need because we are short in some positions.'
Valakari is still holding out hope for a swift Zach Mitchell comeback from the hamstring injury he picked up against Dundee United.
'Zach took a little part in the first bit of training today,' he said.
'He can do runs, stop and start movements, things like that. He's progressing.
'We'll take it day by day. The last hurdle – starting to sprint is, of course, the most difficult.'
Valakari wants to see a change of mindset for the post-split run-in.
Starting with Motherwell on Saturday, a mental 'handbrake' needs to be released.
'This a clean sheet of paper,' he said.
'We've been talking since Christmas about the position we can get ourselves into for this stage and now we are here.
'All the talking is done. These five games will determine our season.
'As a coach, you try to feel who is going which way with their performances, but it is very simple for me and my players.
'We can't play it safe and worry about making mistakes or what will be the consequences of going down.
'If you do that, we are down already. We can't have doubts.
'Focus on positive outcomes and they are more likely to happen for you.
'The handbrake is off.
'We can't have any regrets when we get to the end of these five games. We need to see opportunities.
'That has to be my mindset, my coaches' mindset and my players' mindset.
'If we go down, we have to make sure we have tried everything to be positive. We don't have any egos. If we can express ourselves in our best way, we have a chance.
'If we are frightened of making mistakes the mistakes will come.'
Fran Franczak is now available to Valakari again having completed a full week of training.

Celtic 'set' for surprise J-League transfer raid as Nicolas Kuhn braced for £15m offer from Bundesliga giants
It could be three in, one out as the Hoops transfer window starts with an almighty bang RB Leipzig are reportedly set to launch a £15m bid for Celtic star Nicolas Kuhn – while the Hoops look to the J-League for their latest signing. It was always going to be a summer of change at Celtic Park where Brendan Rodgers promised to shuffle the pack but it's exploded into life like few transfer windows in recent memory. Kuhn started last season on fire and in January he was being talked about as the next star to shatter the outgoing transfer record with a £25m+ move to the English Premier League. His form tailed off towards the end of the season with just four Premiership goals since the turn of the year. But there's still plenty of interest and it's claimed Leipzig are readying a £15m bid for the wide man. Kuhn of course netted a famous double to sink the Germans in the Champions League league phase last season while he also scored a crucial goal against Bayern Munich in the knockout stages before they were cruelly eliminated with one of the final kicks of the ball. According to the Scottish Sun, that's been enough to garner Leipzig's interest and they are weighing up a mega summer move that would dwarf the £3m they paid to sign him in January 2024. Kuhn still has four years to run on his contract so Celtic will be under no pressure to sell to the first bidder. The Hoops are in advanced talks to sign forward Benjamin Nygren who could step directly into Kuhn's shoes while a deal for Fulham striker Callum Osmand is nearly over the line. But they won't be the last of the signings, far from it. According to The Herald, Celtic are set to dip back into the Japanese market for defender Hayato Inamura. The 23-year-old, currently at Albirex Niigata, is left-sided and can play both at centre-back and left-back. He's currently locked in a J-League relegation battle and it's claimed Celtic are ready to move for him now to bolster Rodgers' defence and provide two things he is missing with one swoop. Liam Scales is currently the only naturally left-sided centre-back who featured for the club last season while there is no real backup for Kieran Tierney should Greg Taylor leave. He would become the latest arrival from Japan after the signings of Daizen Maeda, Kyogo, Reo Hatate, Tomoki Iwata and Yuki Kobayashi. European giants weigh up megabucks bid for Nicolas Kuhn with Celtic in line to bank huge profit on winger
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) NICOLAS KUHN is a £15million summer target for former club RB Leipzig. SunSport understands the German giants are weighing up a megabucks bid for the Celtic winger. Celtic signed the German from Rapid Vienna for £3m and would stand to make a huge profit - if they accept any bid from the Bundesliga outfit. Kuhn burst to life for the Hoops last season after initially taking time to settle in Glasgow. He was a standout in the first six months of the season and shone on the Champions League stage. Kuhn ripped Leipzig apart in a 3-1 league phase win and also netted against Bayern Munich in the knockout stages. His form tailed off towards the end of the season but he was still nominated for PFA Scotland Player of the Year. Kuhn finished the season with 21 goals and 15 assists - form that attracted interest from around Europe. It's understood several Bundesliga clubs are watching him but Leipzig want attacking reinforcements after finishing seventh last season. Celtic wouldn't want to lose Kuhn but the prospect of a return to the Bundesliga could appeal. He has made no secret of his ambition to play for the Germany national side and may feel that would boost his chances. Are Rangers boss Philippe Clement's comments on Celtic star Nicolas Kuhn that bad Celtic remain in talks with Nordsjaelland attacker Benjamin Nygren - who can play in Kuhn's position. But it's understood Brendan Rodgers is likely to use him as an attacking midfielder - with the Hoops still in the hunt for wide options. Nygren can play anywhere across the frontline and operated as a second striker for Sweden in recent games. The 23-year-old has bagged two goals in four caps and also rattled in 16 in the Danish Superliga last season. But former IFK Gothenburg sporting director Mats Gren reckons Nygren is better operating as a No10 and believes that is where Rodgers would get the best out of him. Benjamin Nygren's career 2013 (youth level) - 2019: IFK Goteborg - 15 games (six goals, five assists) 2019 - 2022: Genk - seven games (one goal) 2020 - 2022: Heerenveen (loan) - 51 games (seven goals, six assists) 2022 - present: Nordsjaelland - 107 games (35 goals, eight assists) He told SunSport: 'When Benjamin plays on the right wing or as a No9, he can be effective. 'However, he is best as a No10. That is where all his qualities can be on show. 'Benjamin is an intelligent attacker. His left foot is fantastic and he can score goals and assist. 'His final ball is always very good and he can finish when he gets a chance. He has the lot! 'He is not slow but he's maybe not super fast, and that's the only thing you can say that he lacks. 'However, he is quick enough to get away from opponents and has very good vision and passing.' Celtic are also being linked with a move for Japanese defender Hayato Inamura, according to a report in The Herald. The 23 year-old is a left-sided centre-back who can also fill in at left-back and is currently on the books of Albirex Niigata. Inamura was signed from Tokyo University in 2021 and would be following a journey made by a number of his countrymen in recent years. Celtic working on surprise J-League defender transfer
Currently playing for Albirex Niigata the 23-year-old primarily plays as a left-sided centre-back but can also provide cover at left full-back. Signed from Toyo University in 2021 six foot tall Inamura secured a J-League Cup runners-up medal last season, but currently finds himself locked in a relegation struggle in Niigata. Celtic are no strangers to the Japanese market, signing the likes of Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate, Tomoki Iwata and Yuki Kobayashi in the past. The summer transfer window opens this morning with the Parkhead club keen to move quickly to secure more new players. Kieran Tierney's return has been confirmed on a five year deal. Nordsjaelland's Swedish international winger Benjamin Nygren is close to signing for £2million. Teenage Fulham striker Callum Osmand is also close to finalising a cross border move to Glasgow, while goalkeeper Ross Doohan has agreed a pre-contract move from Aberdeen as Scott Bain's replacement. Read more: Parkhead scouts have also tracked Red Star Belgrade's teenage defender Veljko Milosavljevic and the club are in the market for another winger in anticipation of bids for Nicholas Kuhn later in the window. The German wide man, shortlisted for PFA Scotland player of the season, could be one of a number of players to attract interest this summer. Scotland defender Greg Taylor is close to moving overseas under freedom of contract while Leeds United and Sunderland have been credited with an interest in key central defender Cameron Carter-Vickers. Midfielder Hatate is also keen to test himself in a top five league, while last season's top scorer Maeda has yet to agree to a new contract.
