‘Duke & Roya' Review: He's Got Swagger, She's No-Nonsense
Here, the visiting Westerner is Duke (Jay Ellis), a hip-hop star at the height of his fame. In a present-day press interview, he recalls his visit to Afghanistan in 2016, during the country's U.S. occupation, to perform for troops at a large air base near Kabul. The play, which opened Tuesday at the Lucille Lortel Theater, then flashes back to his arrival and his immediate attraction to his Afghan interpreter, Roya (Stephanie Nur).
She's a no-nonsense type, and he's always on vacation mode. But Roya, who works for a women's education organization, has done her research, and knows that the party boy, born to British and American diplomats, was once a bookish English major. His quoting Rumi and James Baldwin impresses her, and Duke appreciates how she challenges him.
It's the standard romance of a down-to-earth civilian who grounds a starry hot shot, and Ellis and Nur lend it enjoyable chemistry.
Charm comes naturally to Ellis, a classic romantic lead in the HBO series 'Insecure' who makes an amiable stage debut here. His swaggering Duke teases out the word 'serendipitous' with the cascading, sweet-talking drawl of a Southern rapper, and he adeptly handles a few verses (penned by Ronvé O'Daniel). Nur finds appealing spaces for wit and agency in her more reserved, reactive role.
But does the play know there's a war on?
Despite an opening scene of martial seriousness, Randolph-Wright treats Afghanistan like a Harlequin romance playground. When the two sneak out of the base for Duke to buy a piece of lapis lazuli, they're thrown into unsurprising peril. Danger! Excitement! Two worlds collide!

Heather Locklear Believes Former Pal Denise Richards' Messy Split From Aaron Phypers Is ‘Karma'
Denise Richards has reportedly been trying to make amends to former friend Heather Locklear as her divorce war with Aaron Phypers gets nastier. But the Melrose Place alum is still upset that Denise hooked up with her ex Richie Sambora years ago, sources tell the National Enquirer. 'Denise has been trying to get in touch but she's not getting anywhere, because Heather has a long memory,' says an insider. (Denise's rep denies she has reached out.) Long before the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum, 54, ever got involved with Aaron, 52, and after her split from Charlie Sheen, she had a hot-and-heavy romance with Heather's estranged husband, Bon Jovi guitarist Richie, that began shortly after her onetime pal filed for divorce in 2006. 'Heather had separated from Richie and she and Denise were hanging out and hitting up nightclubs to let off some steam, but then Denise backstabbed her by taking up with Richie. Heather felt betrayed,' says the insider. Now Denise is caught up in an acrimonious divorce from Aaron, who's unemployed and seeking spousal support. She's accused him in court docs of years of abuse and stealing her laptop and leaking nude photos. As far as Heather, 63, is concerned, it serves Denise right. 'She's not trying to get pleasure from Denise's misery right now, but there is a part of her that says this is a classic case of karma biting Denise in the butt,' says the source. 'In Heather's view, Denise is reaping what she sows in terms of how she's treated people. Heather won't be holding any pity parties for Denise anytime soon.' Meanwhile, the Wild Things star insists she didn't steal Richie from Heather, reportedly explaining to Us Weekly that she and the rocker 'were friends, and we were both going through divorces, and that's what drew us to each other … I did not steal someone's husband. Did I date a former friend's ex-husband? Yes. Did I break up a marriage? No.' The Dynasty star believes Denise didn't just break the girl code, she took a wrecking ball to her relationship with Richie, says the source, adding that while Heather isn't looking to start a fight, she will never forgive Denise. Travis Kelce gives intimate look into Taylor Swift romance with never-before-seen photos from offseason ‘adventures'
Travis Kelce has made his romance with Taylor Swift Instagram-official. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 35, posted sweet snaps of the pair via Instagram Thursday. Kelce first shared a photo of him and Swift wearing matching hats, with his reading 'Captain' and hers saying, 'First mate.' They each also had on similar white lace shirts and casual shorts. Then, in another picture, the power couple matched again in black shirts while out to dinner. The NFL star made a playful finger gun gesture with his hands, while the pop superstar cheekily looked up while holding onto her glasses. Kelce also shared a rare image of him and Swift, also 35, on vacation with pals Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson, and their respective partners. Page Six exclusively reported in March that the three couples had been on a secret getaway to Montana. The group stepped out for a meal at the Auric Room, a supper club and speakeasy, at Lone Mountain Ranch, an insider told Page Six at the time. 'Erin is close friends with Taylor and Travis, and Travis even jokingly credits Erin with encouraging Taylor to date him,' we were told. 'They're all good friends.' The Super Bowl champ rounded out the winter trip shots with a pics of him and his girlfriend ice skating. Swift made playful faces in those images and appeared to be having a blast. Kelce also shared a picture of him and the 'You Belong With Me' singer on vacation with their best friends Ross Travis and Ashley Avignone at an undisclosed location. However, it appears to have been recent since they were all in summer looks and at a candlelit beach. Kelce also included in his roundup photos of him doing karaoke and hiking with his brother, Jason Kelce, and spending quality time with his parents, Donna Kelce and Ed Kelce. The intimate glimpse into his personal life comes just as he prepares to head into the next NFL season. 'Had some adventures this offseason, kept it ,' Travis captioned the post. Earlier this week, the pro athlete and his Chiefs teammates returned to training camp, which forced Travis to miss the New York City premiere of his latest film, 'Happy Gilmore 2.' However, the football player has been open about wanting to get his head in the game for the new season following a disappointing loss against the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl 2025. In February, he announced that he was not retiring just yet and said, 'I'm coming back, for sure. 'Gonna try and get to the best shape I've been this offseason and get back to the mountaintop. Got a real bad taste in my mouth with how I played in that last game and how I got the guys ready for battle. I can't go out like that!!!!' A source exclusively told Page Six in March that Swift was supportive of Travis returning to the NFL. 'She didn't want Travis to retire,' an insider told us. 'She wanted him to go out on a high note.' We were also told the Grammy winner will 'of course' be back in the stands cheering on her man for the 2025-2026 NFL season, as she always has been and plans to make it to as many games as possible. ‘Dan Da Dan' Set Phasers To Stun With Its Most Momokarun Episode Yet
After a riot of referential anime references, live-action food, and power metal exorcisms, the latest episode of Science Saru's anime adaptation of Dan Da Dan delivered the most romantic episode of the show's sci-fi meets yokai madness yet between its protagonists. You bet your ass we're going to gush about the seventh episode of Dan Da Dan season 2, 'Feeling Kinda Gloomy,' the show picks up from the cliffhanger of its previous episode, where Okarun witnesses Momo Ayase working at a maid cafe. After being forced to go by Momo's besties Miku and Muko (and the in-universe presidents of 'Momokarun,' the ship name of Momo and Okarun) the girls make a riot out of poking fun at Momo like any teenagers would when they ambush their friends at work. While Momo working part-time at a maid cafe came as a shock to Okarun, she later explains that she's only doing so to pay for a new phone, a gripe she's routinely remarked about since it got broken way back in the show's premiere. All the same, Miku and Muko had a ball teasing Momo on her first day, and further propel her and Okarun's romance by taking a group photo performing a 'moe moe tri-beam' before slipping it into his pocket. Mortified, Momo tells Okarun he should head home, but ever the mild-mannered gentleman, he says he'll wait around until her shift is over to walk her home. Momo handwaves him away, worrying he'll catch a cold, and shoos him away. All the while, Momo sneaks glances at the clock as she slowly wears down in her day, wondering if Okarun has stayed true to his word. And sure enough, when Momo thought Okarun had high-tailed it back to her place (he, Jiji, and Aira are crashing at the Ayase residence now after the events of the season's opening), Okarun shows up in a huff, apologizing for being late with their group photo clutched in hand. After catching himself extending a hand to Momo to walk her home and trying to play it off like he was motioning to secure his backpack,, Momo clutches his hand, saying, 'ain't so cold now.' Now, shippers can add screenshots of the two handholding scenes to their dedicated computer files, featuring the pair timidly holding hands from a couple of episodes ago and their accidental kiss from season one. But because Dan Da Dan is a shonen anime with shojo romance in its DNA, we got even more drama in our midst this episode with the love rectangle, including Aira's crush on Okarun and Jiji's crush on Momo. While Aira's jealousy of Momo was shelved to be handled in what's sure to be an Okarun/Aira-centric episode next week, this episode saw some trouble in paradise for the love triangle between Momo, Okarun, and Jiji. While Okarun and Momo were making their way back to the Ayase residence, Jiji was back at home training to get his Evil Eye possession under control. While he seemed to have his Ranma 1/2 water transformation under control, Aira spilling her boba tea on him after they both ran up to Momo triggered his transformation. Luckily, with some quick thinking and a bit of luck, Momo was able to spit water on her childhood crush, transforming him back to his usual self. When Jiji goes to check up on Momo, after Evil Eye choked her and ripped at her shirt, Okarun shoves him forcefully away from her, still concerned about the potential threat. It's a perfect recreation of the moment from the manga, one that has become a meme among readers, often accompanied by the caption 'She good, bruh.' We're sure to get our fair share of anime-flavored memes soon, now that the scene has finally been adapted so faithfully. What made this episode so special, beyond it cranking up the slow-burning romance between its leads, is how it's yet another example of Science Saru doing a spectacular job adapting manga creator Yukinobu Tatsu's ongoing manga. In contrast to contemporary shows that settle for a one-to-one copy-paste of manga panels and call it a day, co-directors Abel Gongora and Fuga Yamashiro embellish and add additional scenes that build on the manga, truly adapting it into the medium in every sense of the word. Not only did we have an opening montage adapting what was a few panels into a full-blown montage of Momo's workday underscored by Frédéric Chopin's 'Nocturne in E Flat Major,' we also got a POV camera angles from Okarun's perspective as his peepers tried their hardest not to get caught gawking at Momo in her maid getup. Take past episodes showcasing the pair taking interest in each other's hobbies, with Momo throwing Ultraman poses and Okarun reading what looks like a manga of Ashita No Joe while practicing throwing punches and trying to get stronger through training with Turbo Granny and the boxing single-father alien, Peeny-Weeny, and that's how love starts, you know? We're here for the slow burn. New episodes of Dan Da Dan air every Thursday on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu. Want more io9 news?
