‘Duke & Roya' Review: He's Got Swagger, She's No-Nonsense

‘Duke & Roya' Review: He's Got Swagger, She's No-Nonsense

New York Times7 hours ago

With an American behaving brashly at an overseas military base, getting locals into trouble and considering consequences only later, 'Duke & Roya' feels like scarcely more than a retooling of 'Madama Butterfly.' Like that old problematic chestnut, Charles Randolph-Wright's new play is not without its pleasures, but lacking soaring melodrama, it's hard to believe in its music.
Here, the visiting Westerner is Duke (Jay Ellis), a hip-hop star at the height of his fame. In a present-day press interview, he recalls his visit to Afghanistan in 2016, during the country's U.S. occupation, to perform for troops at a large air base near Kabul. The play, which opened Tuesday at the Lucille Lortel Theater, then flashes back to his arrival and his immediate attraction to his Afghan interpreter, Roya (Stephanie Nur).
She's a no-nonsense type, and he's always on vacation mode. But Roya, who works for a women's education organization, has done her research, and knows that the party boy, born to British and American diplomats, was once a bookish English major. His quoting Rumi and James Baldwin impresses her, and Duke appreciates how she challenges him.
It's the standard romance of a down-to-earth civilian who grounds a starry hot shot, and Ellis and Nur lend it enjoyable chemistry.
Charm comes naturally to Ellis, a classic romantic lead in the HBO series 'Insecure' who makes an amiable stage debut here. His swaggering Duke teases out the word 'serendipitous' with the cascading, sweet-talking drawl of a Southern rapper, and he adeptly handles a few verses (penned by Ronvé O'Daniel). Nur finds appealing spaces for wit and agency in her more reserved, reactive role.
But does the play know there's a war on?
Despite an opening scene of martial seriousness, Randolph-Wright treats Afghanistan like a Harlequin romance playground. When the two sneak out of the base for Duke to buy a piece of lapis lazuli, they're thrown into unsurprising peril. Danger! Excitement! Two worlds collide!

‘Ultimate Dancouga' From ‘Super Robot Wars 30' Gets An Epic Chogokin

CCS Toys is doing a hefty toy of Ultimate Dancouga. Introduced in the DLC for Super Robot Wars 30, the suitably beefy Ultimate Dancouga is getting a hefty chogokin courtesy of CCS Toys this September. This toy of Ultimate Dancouga is not to be confused with the version from Good Smile Company coming out next year. Unlike that toy, this version has no combination or transformation gimmicks and is a straight-up action figure, albeit one with a lot of die-cast involved. Admittedly, in Super Robot Wars 30, we never got to see Ultimate Dancouga actually combine. It was only after Good Smile Company announced their version that we knew that Ultimate Dancouga was comprised of two mecha: the titular Dancouga and the all-new Dairyuga. The latter's beast form is also that of a dragon, hence its name. Obviously, as the Good Smile Company version transforms and combines, the price tag is an awful lot higher, which brings me to the great news about this CCS Toys version. Around 26 cm in height and featuring a lot of die-cast, the price tag is only 33,000 yen (before tax). That's around $227 at the current exchange rate, and an awful lot cheaper than other chogokins of this scale and complexity. To give some context, I have a few CCS Toys chogokins and all of them are gloriously good. Their Gurren Lagann and Mazinger Zero are especially notable. The die-cast used is not only in the joints but also in the frame, which gives excellent stability and durability for posing. The sculpts are also very well done, and it seems that this version of Ultimate Dancouga is very much in line with prior CCS Toys releases. In any case, Dancouga is probably my favorite super robot anime, and I can thoroughly recommend the recent Blu-ray release as well. While this CCS Toys version of Ultimate Dancouga won't be coming Westward, you will be able to pick it up from places such as HobbyLink Japan once it becomes available, as they've stocked their toy releases in the past. NINGBO, China, June 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- This year, audio platform Ximalaya has teamed up with the eastern Chinese port city of Ningbo to roll out "Reasons to Fall in Love with Ningbo–WAVE NINGBO," a joint podcast co-creation initiative. On June 22, the first teaser video, "Ningbo, 'Unveiled'," went live, showcasing the city's irresistible charm—from history and culture to scenery, cuisine, and commerce. Narrated by rising actor Buss Wang (Wang Anyu), "Ningbo, 'Unveiled'," explores what makes the city stand out. Through everyday snapshots of local life, the video reveals Ningbo's cultural depth, economic vitality and the contentment of its residents: True excellence speaks for itself, yet confidence shines through naturally. In Ningbo you can live authentically—and embrace every version of yourself. Why Ningbo Partners with Ximalaya Podcasts A city with a rich heritage, a robust economy, and a distinctive maritime culture, Ningbo's pioneering spirit is embedded in its heritage. By launching "Reasons to Fall in Love with Ningbo–WAVE NINGBO," the city and Ximalaya aim to leverage podcasts as a fresh medium to introduce Ningbo's appeal to younger audiences. As one of China's leading audio platforms, Ximalaya enjoys strong public recognition. By the end of 2023, it had over 303 million average monthly active users across all scenarios, with cumulative Chinese-language podcast listeners exceeding 220 million—meaning approximately 20% of Chinese internet users tune into Ximalaya podcasts. The platform's core audience is urban youth in first- and second-tier cities, characterized by higher education and strong consumption power, including professionals, entrepreneurs, and public service individuals. This vast listener base and engaged demographic have fostered a vibrant content community: Ximalaya hosts over 240,000 commercially valuable podcasts and more than 2.9 million active creators. Experts, cultural figures, industry voices, and everyday individuals all use the platform to share their perspectives. Together, these factors provide solid groundwork for the Ningbo-Ximalaya partnership. Immersive Storytelling: Soundwalking Ningbo During the city-walk creation camp, 20 top Ximalaya podcasters will dive into Ningbo's urban fabric, uncovering layered stories to produce a collective podcast series. Since May 19, creators like "Chundian DARGON," "Malanshan Broadcasting Station," "Aunt Xue's Musings," and "Burn, Uncle Luo," have released special features offering sonic journeys through Ningbo. On June 27-28, Ximalaya and Ningbo will host three themed talk events in the city. Philosophy professor Wang Defeng (Fudan University), composer He Zhanhao, humorist Joe Wong, actor Chen Xiaojing, and podcast host Guan Yadi will lead dialogues on traditional culture, youth trends, business innovation, and local folklore—all rooted in Ningbo. Podcasts: A New Voice for Urban Narratives As a rapidly growing global medium, podcasts attract expanding creator and listener communities. Whether for information, entertainment, or learning, they offer unprecedented diversity. In China, this "long-form, slow-paced" format has become a lifestyle for young audiences, integrated into daily routines like commuting, chores, and travel. Podcasts also permeate urban spaces, serving as key channels for cities to share their stories. The affinity between urban culture and podcast expression is natural, and Ximalaya—as a youth-oriented platform—enables deeper cultural storytelling. The "New Podcast Co-Creation Camp" pioneered by Ximalaya and Ningbo innovates a "podcast + city culture" model. Beyond audio, it blends podcasts with video to transcend traditional media boundaries. From City Walk to City Talk, participants explore Ningbo on foot, connect through sound, and discover enduring urban spirit via podcasts. Ningbo's confident yet distinctive character aligns perfectly with podcasts' reflective nature. Where short videos capture fragments, audio provides temporal depth—letting listeners multidimensionally experience the city's warmth through pure sound. Ningbo is unveiled—and radiantly so. Let's listen to the city's stories through Ximalaya podcasts.
