‘The Garbologists' is a comic drama with two stars, a lot of trash, and a destination in mind

The answer turns out to be yes in Lindsay Joelle's 'The Garbologists.' While her two-hander, now at Gloucester Stage Company, does indeed spin its wheels about halfway through, Noelle knows where she's going. So does Rebecca Bradshaw, Gloucester Stage's producing artistic director, who's at the helm of production. So, for that matter, do Paul Melendy and Thomika Marie Bridwell, the estimable duo charged with taking the audience on trash-collection trips through the streets of Manhattan during winter time. The payoff, emotionally speaking, is substantial when we arrive at the play's destination.
Melendy plays Danny, a white, voluble, 41-year-old man with nearly a decade of trash-collecting under his belt. Bridwell is his new partner, Marlowe, a Black woman in her late 30s who is initially as terse as Danny is talkative.

Structurally, 'The Garbologists' combines the archetypal odd-couple pairing with the scorpions-in-a-bottle atmosphere that often ensues when mismatched people are locked within a confined space — in this case, a garbage truck. 'Do people ever tell you they want to strangle you?' asks an exasperated Marlowe. Without missing a beat, Danny replies: 'All the time.' We believe it.
Danny and Marlowe are both nursing wounds — one much more severe than the other.

Bradshaw and her creative team, especially set designer Kristin Loeffler, nail the specifics of garbage collection, up to and including the garbage truck in which Marlowe and Danny sit. Joelle wanted it to look like Danny and Marlowe are doing actual work as they hoist trash bags into that truck, and it does. We get a sense of the wide variety of objects trash collectors have to handle: Stuffed animals, sports trophies, a box of … let's call them erotic aids.
We also learn a few things about the hidden dangers of trash collection, as when Danny abruptly pulls Marlowe away from the back of the truck and vehemently cautions her about dangerous substances, such as hydrochloric acid, that can 'eat your lungs, burn you from the inside. Closed casket at your funeral' if the truck's hopper blade comes down on a bag containing that acid.
By one of those weird art-imitating-life coincidences noted by Bradshaw in pre-show remarks at Sunday's performance, 'The Garbologists' has taken the stage at a time when Gloucester, along with a number of other communities, has been coping with a strike by trash collectors.
In the realm of fictional drama and comedy, the occupation of trash collection has sometimes been woven into the story, but seldom with as much respect and as little condescension as in 'The Garbologists.' Remember how Tony Soprano always claimed to be in 'the waste management business'? Or the episode on the NBC sitcom '

Marlowe has a degree in art history from an Ivy League college, and the fact that she has chosen to be a sanitation worker is a source of bewilderment to Danny, and to us in the audience as well for much of the play. Bit by bit, they start to confide aspects of their personal lives.
Anyone who has seen Melendy in action over the last decade knows what an exceptionally agile comic performer he is. While he overdoes the dese-dems-dose stuff in the early going, it's not long before he's adding layers to his portrayal of Danny and smoothly navigating the play's tonal shifts. As he proved three years ago by playing nearly 20 characters in
He doesn't need to in 'The Garbologists.' Bridwell has been a busy and welcome presence on Boston stages in recent years, with indelible turns in

Its flaws notwithstanding, 'The Garbologists' is a worthy addition in the American theater's ever-growing roster of comic dramas. Indeed, the guiding principle of that genre can't be better stated than it is in a note by Joelle on her script: 'This play is a comedy for as long as possible.'

Ozzy Osbourne Funeral Procession to Be Held in His Hometown on Wednesday, City Says

When Ozzy Osbourne was an advice columnist for the Sunday Times of London, he detailed what he wanted his funeral to be like. The heavy metal singer and reality TV star wrote in 2011 that he hoped the eventual ceremony would be 'a celebration, not a mope-fest,' and preferably include some pranks — 'maybe the sound of knocking inside the coffin.' On Tuesday, the City Council in the singer's hometown, Birmingham, England, said that a celebration of the singer's life would be held there on Wednesday, with a hearse carrying his body through Birmingham's main street accompanied by a brass band. The procession will culminate at the Black Sabbath Bench, a tourist attraction dedicated to Osbourne and his bandmates in the heavy metal group that has become a focal point for fan tributes since Osbourne's death at age 76 last week. Zafar Iqbal, Birmingham's lord mayor, an honorary position, said in a statement that 'it was important to the city that we support a fitting, dignified tribute ahead of a private family funeral. We know how much this moment will mean to his fans.' The Osbourne family is covering all costs related to the procession, the lord mayor added. Details of a private family funeral have not yet been announced. A spokesman for the Osbourne family did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. The procession will take place just weeks after Osbourne performed his last ever show, 'Back to the Beginning,' an all-day festival on July 5 that celebrated the singer's life and music. Held at a soccer stadium in Birmingham, the concert also served as a momentary reunion for Black Sabbath, the band that he and three other musicians formed in 1968. Heavy metal and rock bands including Metallica, Slayer and Guns 'n' Roses also played sets and covered Black Sabbath songs at that event, and video tributes from celebrities like Elton John and Dolly Parton were broadcast on large screens at the side of the stage. As Black Sabbath's lead singer, Osbourne was widely considered a forefather of heavy metal music, although he achieved more commercial success in the 1980s and 1990s as a solo musician after his bandmates fired him. In the 2000s, he added reality television success to his résumé thanks to the MTV show 'The Osbournes,' which documented the daily life of the singer and his family. After Osbourne's death, many of his fans traveled to Birmingham to leave tributes. Some also signed a condolence book at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which has been hosting an exhibition on Osbourne.

NBC Pushes ‘The Hunting Party' to Midseason, As It Sets Fall Premiere Dates for NBA, ‘One Chicago' Wednesdays and ‘Law & Order' Thursdays

NBC is bringing 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' back to the network this fall, pushing 'The Hunting Party' to midseason. That's among the scheduling tweaks revealed by the network as it unveils premiere dates for its full fall lineup. NBC previously unveiled its fall 2025 schedule back in May, but the 'L&O:OG' and 'Hunting Party' switcheroo are among several notable changes. The second season of 'The Hunting Party' was originally scheduled to air following new episodes of 'Law & Order' and 'Law & Order: SVU' on Thursday nights. Instead, the sophomore season will now be held until after January. More from Variety Native American Community Center Comedy Pilot Not Moving Forward at NBC 'The Voice' Renewed for Season 29 With Format Revamp; Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Adam Levine Returning NBC Orders Cheerleading Comedy 'Stumble' to Series In its place, NBC will air a three-hour 'Law & Order' block on Thursdays beginning Sept. 25. Following 'Law & Order' and 'SVU,' the fifth season of 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' will be re-aired on the broadcaster at 10 p.m. ET. Season 5 of the show originally debuted on Peacock in April after airing its first four seasons on NBC. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, there is a chance 'The Hunting Party' will begin airing in February 2026 to take advantage of promotion around NBC's packed sports schedule that month. That includes the Super Bowl, the NBA All-Star game, and Olympics coverage. 'The Hunting Party' is also relocating from Canada to shoot in New York for its second season. In keeping with the Dick Wolf of it all, NBC's 'One Chicago' lineup returns on Wednesday, Oct. 1 led off by 'Chicago Med' at 8 p.m., followed by 'Chicago Fire' and 'Chicago PD.' One other change affects NBC's comedy lineup. Although the network originally left open time slots after returning comedies 'St. Denis Medical' and 'Happy's Place' on Mondays and Fridays respectively, both shows will now air back to back new episodes beginning on Monday, Nov. 3 and Friday, Nov. 7. NBC has two new comedies — cheerleading show 'Stumble' and 'The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins' starring Tracy Morgan and Daniel Radcliffe — still waiting in the wings. The shows could still potentially air following 'St. Denis Medical' or 'Happy's Place' come fall, but no plans are locked at the time of this publishing. Looking elsewhere on the schedule, the NBA will make its highly-anticipated return to NBC officially on Oct. 21. The network will kick off coverage at 6:30 p.m. ET with the pregame show, followed by a double header starting at 7:30 p.m. The teams participating in those games will be announced shortly. The medical drama 'Brilliant Minds' will return for its second season on Monday, Sept. 22 at 10 p.m. following a the season premiere episode of 'The Voice.' The new unscripted series 'On Brand with Jimmy Fallon' will launch on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 10 p.m. NBC will air two episodes of the marketing competition series per week, with an episode also airing on Fridays starting Oct 3. The 51st season of 'Saturday Night Live' begins on Oct. 4. As previously announced, NBC will air a two-hour 'Wicked' special on Thursday, Nov. 6 starting at 8 p.m., two weeks ahead of the launch of the film 'Wicked: For Good.'
