Cathal Dennehy: The record-breaking run that still bonds four Irish athletics greats

Had they turned it down – and they were close – they'd never have known what they would have missed. Eamonn Coghlan, Marcus O'Sullivan, Frank O'Mara and Ray Flynn would have carried on their careers, richly decorated as they were, and lived in blissful ignorance of the chance left behind. It was August 1985, and the four Irish middle-distance greats were not all that fussed when John O'Shea, founder of humanitarian charity GOAL, came to them with an idea: for an Irish team to break the 4 x mile world record in Belfield. O'Shea had visited Ethiopia that spring, where famine was ravaging the population, and been inspired to put on a fundraiser that could help. He picked out a date, August 17, but Flynn, O'Sullivan and O'Mara were due to race in Zurich four days later and, as such, were hesitant. O'Shea hopped on a plane to Zurich to convince them. What Irish TV channel is Aston Villa vs Newcastle Utd on? Kick-off time, live stream, teams and odds for Premier League

BIG GAME What Irish TV channel is Aston Villa vs Newcastle Utd on? Kick-off time, live stream, teams and odds for Premier League THE opening weekend of the Premier League season continues when Aston Villa host Newcastle United on Saturday. Action got underway on Friday night when defending champions Liverpool got their campaign up and running with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth. Here is everything you need to know about the match. When is it on and what time is kick-off? Aston Villa vs Newcastle United takes place at Villa Park today, Saturday August 16. Kick-off is at 12:30pm. Where can I watch it? The game is being shown on TNT Sport 1, with coverage getting underway at 11am. Those seeking to stream the game can do so through a TNT Sport or NowTV subscription. What is the latest team news? The big news coming into the game relates to Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker is seeking to engineer a move away from St James' Park, with Liverpool waiting in the wings. As a result of the transfer saga, Isak has been left OUT of the Newcastle squad for Saturday's game. What are the odds? Unai Emery's men are priced at 128/100 to kick off the campaign with three points, while Newcastle are valued at 9/4. The draw, meanwhile, is out to 11/4. Liverpool fans pay touching tribute to Diogo Jota in first Premier League match since star's tragic death What has been said in the build-up? Eddie Howe admitted if it was easy to persuade Alexander Isak to stay at Newcastle, he would have done it already. Toon's £150million-rated Swede is banished from Howe's squad amid Liverpool's transfer push. And, after Saturday's 2-0 friendly defeat by Atletico Madrid, Howe confessed: 'The club will make a decision on his future — and I do not know what that will be. 'Of course, I have a preferred outcome but I also want players who really want to play for this football club. 'If it was that easy, I'd be doing it. And I'd have done it yesterday.' Defeat by the Spaniards means Newcastle will head to Aston Villa for Saturday's Prem opener without a pre-season win. Howe admits his side lack a goal threat without Isak, but he added: 'That would be a fair assessment but we can still win football matches.' Howe also played down reports that Toon will refuse to sell Isak this month with Liverpool yet to follow up their rejected opening £110m offer. He added: 'Discussions are going on all the time but I am unaware of that.'
