PETALING JAYA: A 'fearless' Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli will continue to shape the country's future through meaningful ways even if he is not in the government, says Nurul Izzah Anwar.
The new PKR deputy president, who beat Rafizi in the party election, said he was never afraid to confront those in power or to speak the truth.
She said her predecessor's ideas and policies changed the country's discourse, especially in terms of governance, transparency and economic justice.
'I respect him. Many of his ideas will not be forgotten. Instead, they will be continued, refined and implemented, not because they came from him or me, but because they are best for Malaysia.
'This country needs bold ideas and steps, and I believe he has a lot more to contribute,' she said on her Facebook page yesterday.
Her statement came after the Pandan MP announced his resignation from his Cabinet post as Economy Minister yesterday,
Separately, Nurul Izzah spoke about how her focus remains on strengthening PKR.
'As part of the first step, we will introduce mandatory training specific for party leadership at central, state and branch levels on the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA), corruption and tax compliance,' she said.
Former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin, who was sacked from Umno in 2023, had urged Rafizi not to quit despite his defeat.
Rafizi, he said, had strong resilience and was still able to contribute ideas even without a key position.
However, the former health minister acknowledged that Rafizi's situation was different from his own.
Khairy, who challenged Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in 2018 and lost, said he had chosen to remain in the party after the defeat.
'When I was sacked, I had no choice. I had no issue with the party; I had merely offered myself for the presidency.
'My relationship with Zahid remained good. So, to Rafizi, keep fighting!' he told Sinar Harian during a visit to the Karangkraf Group Complex on Tuesday.

Mature democracy cannot exist without free, fair and fearless journalism, says Ramanan
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalists' Day (Hawana) is not a mere celebration, but a reminder that a mature democracy cannot exist without free, fair and fearless journalism, according to Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. In a Facebook post in conjunction with Hawana 2025, Ramanan said honour and recognition should be given to the journalists for their daily dedication to reporting with conscience and amplifying the voices of the people with integrity and responsibility. "I speak not only as a government leader but as someone who deeply values the trust and freedom to speak out. "I am sincerely grateful for every news report and coverage, including those involving myself and my programmes, both past and present,' he posted. Ramanan, who is also PKR vice-president, also acknowledged the media's vital role in providing a platform for him and his colleagues to advance the reform agenda. "Without you, our voices would go unheard, and without you, the people's voices would never resonate. Keep reporting the truth. Never fear speaking out for the sake of justice," he added. Hawana is celebrated annually on May 29, with this year's main event scheduled for June 14 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to officiate the event, which is set to gather around 1,000 media practitioners from Malaysia and abroad. Now in its fifth edition since its inception in 2018, Hawana is an annual occasion that brings together media professionals to honour their contributions to national development. - Bernama

Isham Jalil to know contempt of court ruling on July 1
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Umno information chief Isham Jalil will know on July 1 whether he will be held in contempt of court over remarks allegedly undermining public confidence in the judiciary. Judge K. Muniandy fixed the date after hearing lengthy submissions from both parties in committal proceedings initiated by the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) against Isham today. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam who appeared for the A-GC submitted that Isham's statements posed a real risk of undermining public confidence in the administration of justice. "The respondent has tarnished the judiciary's reputation when he questioned the actions and decision of the Federal Court and the High Court involving both 1MDB and SRC International criminal cases," he said. Meanwhile, Isham's lawyer Tan Sri Azizan Harun argued that the statements were never intended to bring the court into disrepute and that the A-GC failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that his client's actions amounted to contempt of court. Azizan, who is also the former Dewan Rakyat speaker, said the grounds raised during the committal hearing were different from those presented when applying for leave to start the proceedings. This, he said, left his client unsure of how to prepare a proper defence. He said the courts must be strong enough to withstand criticism and should not overreact, especially in today's social media era where everyone is free to express their opinions. He argued that some of the points Isham raised had been brought up by Najib's own lawyers in court, questioning why his client could not express similar views outside the courtroom. The application was filed on Dec 28, 2023, following Isham's remarks in an interview titled "Townhall For Justice: Keadilan Sebenarnya Untuk Siapa?" (Justice: Who Is It Really For?). In his remarks, Isham had criticised the corruption trial and appeal involving his former boss, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in relation to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and SRC International Sdn Bhd cases. The recorded interview, which discussed the trial and appeal proceedings in the SRC and 1MDB cases, was posted on the Facebook page of "The Malaya Post" on Sept 30, 2023.
