Isham Jalil to know contempt of court ruling on July 1
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Umno information chief Isham Jalil will know on July 1 whether he will be held in contempt of court over remarks allegedly undermining public confidence in the judiciary.
Judge K. Muniandy fixed the date after hearing lengthy submissions from both parties in committal proceedings initiated by the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) against Isham today.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam who appeared for the A-GC submitted that Isham's statements posed a real risk of undermining public confidence in the administration of justice.
"The respondent has tarnished the judiciary's reputation when he questioned the actions and decision of the Federal Court and the High Court involving both 1MDB and SRC International criminal cases," he said.
Meanwhile, Isham's lawyer Tan Sri Azizan Harun argued that the statements were never intended to bring the court into disrepute and that the A-GC failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that his client's actions amounted to contempt of court.
Azizan, who is also the former Dewan Rakyat speaker, said the grounds raised during the committal hearing were different from those presented when applying for leave to start the proceedings.
This, he said, left his client unsure of how to prepare a proper defence.
He said the courts must be strong enough to withstand criticism and should not overreact, especially in today's social media era where everyone is free to express their opinions.
He argued that some of the points Isham raised had been brought up by Najib's own lawyers in court, questioning why his client could not express similar views outside the courtroom.
The application was filed on Dec 28, 2023, following Isham's remarks in an interview titled "Townhall For Justice: Keadilan Sebenarnya Untuk Siapa?" (Justice: Who Is It Really For?).
In his remarks, Isham had criticised the corruption trial and appeal involving his former boss, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in relation to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and SRC International Sdn Bhd cases.
The recorded interview, which discussed the trial and appeal proceedings in the SRC and 1MDB cases, was posted on the Facebook page of "The Malaya Post" on Sept 30, 2023.

PKR Youth chief makes case for accepting ‘professional' Zafrul
Kamil Munim, head of PKR Youth and an aide to party president Anwar Ibrahim, said Tengku Zafrul Aziz could offer added value to PKR. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The head of PKR Youth, Kamil Munim, has stated support for accepting former Umno leader Tengku Zafrul Aziz into PKR, saying the move would boost support for the party. Kamil said PKR should be open to taking in professional figures like Tengku Zafrul; the decision would show that the party was continuing to expand its horizons as a mature party, reflecting its readiness to continue leading the nation. 'I believe that Tengku Zafrul joining PKR, which is understood to have been in discussion for more than a year, would allow us to attract support from various quarters as we build a more progressive, just and inclusive nation,' he said in a post on X. 'This is in line with PKR's commitment to politics based on ideas, expertise and integrity. Tengku Zafrul's experiences can offer some added value to PKR,' said Kamil, who is a political secretary to PKR president and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an Umno member yesterday and stated his intention to join PKR. This ruffled some feathers within his former party, with Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki warning PKR against breeding disharmony between the government allies. PKR central leadership council member Adam Adli was quoted by Malaysiakini as expressing concern that ties with Umno would become tense because of Tengku Zafrul's decision. However, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said the party will consider the input of its government allies as well as PKR's own grassroots in evaluating membership applications, including that of Tengku Zafrul.

Tengku Zafrul's GE15 pledge unenforceable, says Tok Mat
Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said he could not see how the GE15 pledge could be enforced against Tengku Zafrul Aziz as he did not win the seat he contested. PETALING JAYA : The review of a pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul Aziz when he was a Barisan Nasional candidate in the 15th general election cannot be enforced because he did not win in the election. Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said Tengku Zafrul was appointed as the investment, trade and industry minister in his capacity as a senator, Bernama reported. 'This matter is not included within the scope of the agreement because Tengku Zafrul did not win in the election. 'That pledge is made by any elected representative as a state assemblyman or an MP. 'If they win, the seat belongs to the party, not to the individual. 'The individual who becomes a candidate and wins signs many agreements, including reimbursing the costs incurred by the party and many other things. 'Tengku Zafrul did not win. He became a minister on the basis of being a senator. So I don't see how the pledge can be enforced against him,' he told reporters after a luncheon in Seremban today. He was commenting on a statement by Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi, who urged the party to take stern action against Tengku Zafrul, who announced his departure from Umno to join PKR yesterday. Puad also asked the party to review the pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul when he was a BN candidate in GE15. Tengku Zafrul lost in the election for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat. Puad asked the party to study the possibility of demanding RM100 million in compensation if Tengku Zafrul's action is considered as party hopping. Asked whether the resignation would affect Umno, Mohamad, who is also Rembau MP, said Tengku Zafrul did not hold a high position in the party and it would not have a significant impact on Umno. Earlier today, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party's legal team would review whether Tengku Zafrul had breached the agreement signed during GE15, which binds candidates to the party.

Review pact with PH if PKR takes Zafrul in, says Kedah Umno
A decision by PKR to accept Tengku Zafrul Aziz could cause rifts in the coalition government, said Syed Johan Rizal Syed Unan Mashri. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Kedah Umno has urged Barisan Nasional to review its partnership with Pakatan Harapan for the next general election (GE16) if PKR accepts Tengku Zafrul Aziz as a member. PKR would be akin to 'stealing' an Umno leader if it took in Tengku Zafrul as a member, said Kedah Umno communications director Syed Johan Rizal Syed Unan Mashri. He told FMT that this could then lead to fractured ties within the coalition government, similar to how Bersatu had also 'fished' for Umno leaders in the past. After the 2018 general election, in which BN lost power, a host of Umno leaders defected to Bersatu, among them Hamzah Zainudin, now Bersatu deputy president, and Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, the current Wanita Bersatu chief. 'Today, it's one leader, but what will happen next? If our own allies in the government do not respect such boundaries, we should reassess our political compass in GE16,' said Syed Johan. 'Umno won't stop anyone from leaving but our allies should respect the political boundaries. If they don't respect the spirit of friendship among allies, we must be more stern in defending Umno's honour,' he said. Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an Umno member yesterday, relinquishing his posts as a member of the party's Supreme Council and the head of its Kota Raja division. The senator also said he has conveyed his intention to join PKR to its president Anwar Ibrahim, and secretary-general Fuziah Salleh. Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki warned PKR against accepting Tengku Zafrul as a member, saying it would cause disharmony between the government allies. Earlier, Fuziah said PKR will consider the input of its allies in the government as well as the party's own grassroots in evaluating membership applications, including that of Tengku Zafrul. However he has yet to submit his official PKR membership application. Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin was unhappy with Fuziah's response, saying PKR should have decided from the outset to reject Tengku Zafrul's application.
