MRI unit, cath lab to come up at GMC Baramulla

Counterfeit cancer drugs: Most drug samples tested are genuine, says Delhi govt
Most of the cancer drug samples taken from private pharmacies by the Delhi government to check their purity are genuine, health department officials said on Thursday. The government collected 160 samples from private pharmacies in June, of which 127 were specifically cancer drugs, as part of an investigation into counterfeit drug rackets. A pharmacy in Delhi. (AFP) Samples were taken from distribution hubs near cancer centres in South Delhi, including AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, and Lok Nayak Hospital adjoining the Central Delhi zone, Daryaganj and Bhagirath Place near Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Rohini, and Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi. The samples included Imatinib (Veenat 400), a combination drug (used alone or with other medicines) to treat different cancers, and Capegard 500, used for breast, colon, and rectum cancers. 'Of the 127 samples of cancer drugs collected from various outlets in Delhi, 75 samples have been declared to be genuine and complying with the prescribed quality norms. The report for the remaining 52 samples is awaited. All the samples whose reports have been received so far are declared to be of standard quality. For the other 30 samples of the total remaining 52 samples, the inquiry report will also likely come soon,' said a senior official from the drug control department on Thursday, requesting anonymity. In June, health minister Pankaj Singh ordered an investigation following multiple complaints about counterfeit drugs being sold in the city. Explaining how the drugs were tested, the official cited above said that after the samples were collected, they were sent to labs for testing along with the chemicals and other substances required for the tests. The official added that the fake cancer drug racket is spread across several states. 'While the drug control department is taking steps to monitor the movement of doubtful quality/counterfeit drugs in Delhi, more collaboration from different agencies could help in eradicating the racket at hand,' the official said. In the past month, there have been several reports of fake cancer drugs being sold in Delhi. On June 6, HT reported that eight men were arrested in Delhi for running a racket selling counterfeit cancer drugs. Among the drugs recovered were high-value cancer treatments such as Opdivo, Pembrolizumab, Cetuximab, Lenvatinib, and seven other critical injections and capsules. Investigators said the medicines, typically priced between ₹1 lakh and ₹3 lakh, were being sold for ₹30,000 to ₹50,000.

CDSCO alert finds 151 samples failing quality test in July
New Delhi The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has listed at least 143 drugs as not of standard quality (NSQ) and eight spurious samples in July, after both central and state testing laboratories across the country flagged them, according to the national drugs regulator's alert issued on Thursday. CDSCO alert finds 151 samples failing quality test in July Data accessed by HT for the year so far showed that at least 704 samples were labelled as NSQ by the national drugs regulator while 11 samples were found to be spurious. NSQ drugs are those that fail to meet the quality standards or specifications, including those pertaining to labelling, dissolution, weight uniformity, and sterility. According to a release issued by CDSCO, of the 143 samples that failed the quality test, 97 were identified by various state drugs testing laboratories, while the central drugs laboratories identified 46. 'As per routine regulatory surveillance activity, the list of Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) and Spurious drugs are being displayed… Identification of drug samples as NSQ is done based on failure of the drug sample in one or the other specified quality parameters. The failure is specific to the drug products of the batch tested by the Govt. Laboratory and it does not warrant any concerns on the other drug products available in the market,' CDSCO said in the statement. 'Seven drug samples from the State of Bihar, and one drug sample from the CDSCO North Zone, Ghaziabad, is identified as spurious drug… which was manufactured by unauthorized manufacturer using brand name owned by other company, the matter is under investigation and action will be taken as per Act & Rules,' it added. Last year, at least 900 samples were found to be of NSQ and 20 spurious from samples randomly lifted from across the country. As part of the continuous regulatory surveillance, drug samples are picked from sales or distribution points and analysed after which the regulator displays a list of NSQ drugs on CDSCO portal on monthly basis. The purpose of displaying the NSQ list is to make stakeholders aware about the batches of such drugs identified in the market. The Drugs Controller General of India, Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, earlier said that the CDSCO was taking all measures to drastically bring down the percentage of less efficacious drugs, noting that only around 1.5% of the total drugs being sampled were found less efficacious in recent surveys. Identification of drug samples as NSQ is done based on the failure of the drug sample in one or the other specified quality parameters. The regulator said the failure is specific to the drug products of the batch tested by the government laboratory and it does not warrant any concerns on the other drug products available in the market. Besides NSQs, some defective products related to quality are also categorised as adulterated or spurious drugs, which are considered to have potential to cause serious adverse reactions and even death. 'This action of identifying NSQ and Spurious medicines is taken on a regular basis in collaboration with state regulators to ensure that these drugs are identified and removed from the market,' said the statement.

Rane: 19 cholera cases detected at Cutbona jetty
Panaji: After an acute diarrhoea disease case, suggestive of cholera, was reported at the GMC, 19 cases were detected among fisheries workers at Cutbona jetty, health minister Vishwajit Rane said. The directorate of health services took immediate action and has been screening workers, testing and cleaning water tanks, stocking medicines, and running awareness drives, he said. 'With the fisheries department, local panchayat, FDA, Sulabh Souchalaya, deputy collector, and boat owners' associations joining hands, the health services is improving sanitation and is safeguarding the fishing community,' the minister said. To prevent the spread of ADD/cholera, it is conducting awareness and education drives at fishing jetties. Posters, leaflets, and sessions in Odia and Chhattisgarhi guide workers on hygiene, safe water and sanitation practices to safeguard the community, he added. Govt on Wednesday inaugurated a 50-seater Sulabh toilet at Cutbona jetty and laid the foundation stone for a 100KLD sewage treatment plant. Locals complained of fishing workers defecating in the open, and the authorities are urging fishing vessel owners to get their workers to use these toilets when at the jetty.
