
Woman killed in West Penn Twp. car crash
A 30-year-old Lehighton woman died and another person suffered injuries in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning in West Penn Twp.
The crash happened at 6:16 a.m. at 2520 West Penn Pike near Thunderhead Lodge at the top of Blue Mountain, a Schuylkill County Communications supervisor confirmed.
A second person was flown by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest- Allentown.
Authorities have yet to release the identity of the victim, pending notification of family.
It's unclear if weather was a factor in the accident, authorities said.
The road was shut down until 10:45 a.m. because of the accident.
Two deputies with the Schuylkill County Coroner's office responded to the scene after being dispatched at 6:29 a.m.
The victim, who was the driver of a car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Next-of-kin has not yet been notified, said Schuylkill County Coroner David Moylan III.
A post-mortem CAT scan will be done at the Schuylkill County Forensic Center, possibly later Friday, Moylan said.
West Penn Twp. police are investigating.

Coroner's office dispatched to crash in McAdoo
A deputy with the Schuylkill County Coroner's office has been dispatched to a vehicle accident in McAdoo. A dispatcher with the Schuylkill County Communications Center confirmed there was an accident in the area of 1000 Mile Hill Road resulting in a fatality. Schuylkill County Coroner David Moylan III said the the coroner's office was dispatched shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday for a multivehicle crash in Kline Twp. A post mortem CT scan will be done at the Schuylkill County Forensic Center on Sunday or Monday. State Police at Frackville are investigating the incident. Drug Take Back Day collects 825 pounds
POTTSVILLE — A total of 825 pounds of drugs were collected during National Drug Take Back Day in Schuylkill County Saturday. That was an increase compared to last year's total of 688.5 pounds, officials said. In all, 22 sites in the county participated in the national event, which is held in April and October. A representative with the Drug Enforcement Agency collected the drugs Monday for incineration. Schuylkill County Sheriff Joseph Groody said he appreciated the effort of everyone who donated and participated. 'I'm glad to see that we got that many turned in,' he said Monday of the 47 boxes. People were able to drop off unused, unwanted and expired medications. Items not accepted included glass containers, intravenous solutions, injectables, syringes and controlled substances such as marijuana and methamphetamines. Meanwhile, drugs can be dropped off anytime during regular business hours at the security entrance to the Schuylkill County Courthouse. Residents can also drop off unused prescription drugs at the Minersville Police Station or at the Ashland Borough Hall or police station. Ryan Twp. children injured in UTV crash in farm field
Two Ryan Twp. children were flown by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest- Allentown after a UTV crash Saturday in the township. State police at Frackville said the accident happened at 1:16 p.m. on private property in a farm field in the area of 41 Front St. as a 10-year-old female was driving a Polaris Ranger UTV with her 5-year-old brother as a passenger. She lost control and hit a large tree, throwing her brother from the vehicle, police said. Both children were flown by helicopter to the hospital, police said. Ryan Twp. Fire Chief Tom Price responded. He said neither child was wearing a helmet. The girl was in and out of consciousness and the boy was not conscious, he said. The boy remained a patient at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Price said on Wednesday. The girl is believed to have been discharged from a hospital, he said. Any operator of an ATV or UTV is required to wear a helmet, according to Pennsylvania's All-Terrain Vehicle law. 'No one under 8 years of age shall operate an ATV on any state-owned property. No person from age 8 to their 16th birthday shall operate an ATV except on lands of his parent or guardian, unless he or she has completed a prescribed ATV safety training course and received an ATV safety training certificate,' according to To help the family defray medical expenses, Ryan Twp. Fire and Rescue is holding a special online raffle with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the family of the injured children. As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, $3,000 has been raised for the family, Price said. Tickets for the raffle are $10 for $600 worth of lottery tickets.
