Tipperary U20s triumph over Clare in Munster final amid controversial calls
Munster U20 Hurling Championship: Tipperary 3-19 Clare 1-20 The day began with confirmation of player unrest in the Clare senior camp. The day concluded with Munster final defeat for their U20 class. A Wednesday to be put in the Banner bin. For Tipp, a sweet five days. A restorative victory for their flagship team. An U20 Munster final victory that reinforces their thriving underage scene. Such is the talent in the Premier underage ranks, the performance was less than clinical and yet they still came away with a five-point winning margin. After captain Sam O'Farrell signed off on his acceptance speech, the Premier faithful gathered in front of him chanted 'Tipp, Tipp, Tipp'. After an April of little cheer, their summer is suddenly packed with promise on more than one front. The win here was more than a successful title defence. The win secured a 23rd provincial crown at this age-grade and took Tipp one clear of Cork at the head of the roll of honour. It was a win that emerged through a haze of controversial penalty calls in the second period. The first went to Clare on 43 minutes. Sub Harry Doherty was adjudged to have been fouled as he, Eoin McMahon, and James Organ were denied in quick succession. Fred Hegarty nailed the penalty. The Banner 1-17 to 1-14 in front. The same player stroked over a free in the play after to shove the gap to four. Then came an even bigger call. On 47 minutes, a slap by Jamie Moylan on Tipp centre-forward Conor Martin was deemed by referee Ciarán O'Regan to have denied a goal opportunity. Vexing Clare was that Eoghan Gunning dispossessed Martin directly after Moylan's contact. A penalty to Tipp, a black card to Moylan. A Darragh McCarthy conversion, Clare down to 14 for 10 minutes. Brendan Cummins' charges clipped another 1-3 while Moylan was out of commission. That third goal was an Oisín O'Donoghue sideline not dealt with and eventually scrambled home by Conor English. The earlier four-point deficit was a four-point lead, 3-17 to 1-19, when Moylan returned on 57 minutes. Fred Hegarty's 12th white flag provided a one-score game entering injury-time. Tipp, though, had finally hit stride. Composed in defence, troublesome further forward. McCarthy, who failed to score from play throughout, struck back-to-back frees, the latter won by the outstanding O'Donoghue. Clare struck back-to-back wides in first-half injury-time. Centre-back James Hegarty and corner-forward Michael Collins were off target. Had one of them gone over, it would have delivered interval stalemate. As it was, that the Banner trailed only by the minimum at the break - 1-11 to 0-13 - was a wonder. The same as the semi-final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, their goalmouth lived a most charmed existence. And while Tipp succeeded where Cork did not in shaking the opposition net, a second wonder was how the Clare net had shook just once in the opening half hour. Tipp's first goal chance presented itself 11 minutes in. Conor Martin to O'Donoghue to David Costigan. Goalkeeper Mark Sheedy equal to Costigan's drive, with the play then brought back for a free that Darragh McCarthy converted. That free began an unanswered Tipp sequence of 1-6. From four down to 1-8 to 0-6 in front on 17 minutes. The goal came from a second goal chance not taken that was then pulled back for a free. O'Donoghue fouled, English unable to raise a green flag during the subsequent advantage. It worked out for them in the end. McCarthy went short with the free on this occasion to O'Donoghue. His low drive caught out an unsuspecting Clare defence. Cathal English, twice, Conor Martin, and Paddy McCormack added points. Clare's positive start now a distant memory. A pair of frees from Hegarty, either side of a Daniel Costelloe point, settled Clare and reinserted them in the contest. In the ensuing three minutes, Clare could have been removed from the contest altogether. Paddy McCormack ratted the crossbar. O'Donoghue, with an open goal at his mercy, somehow swung the rebound over. In the play after that, McCormack kicked wide. From six goal openings, five not taken. Even allowing for Eoghan Gunning's fine man-marking job on Darragh McCarthy, that Clare full-back line was again proving porous. After a third quarter under the pump, Tipp, aided by a refereeing call and the late introduction of captain Sam O'Farrell, roared home. Dublin or Kilkenny await in the All-Ireland final. Statute of limitations for pandemic unemployment fraud expires; bipartisan coalition seeks extension
Federal law enforcement's hands are tied now that the statute of limitations for prosecuting fraud in COVID-era unemployment programs has expired. While Congress extended the statute of limitations for pandemic-era business relief fraud in 2022, the window to prosecute fraud in individual relief programs closed Thursday. "There's huge amounts of fraud that law enforcement officials are still trying to track down," said Andrew Moylan, a public finance policy expert at the for-profit philanthropy group Arnold Ventures. "Every day that goes by from today, we lose the ability to prosecute fraud day by day. That's a huge problem, and this should be something that's an easy fix for Congress." Despite opposition from 127 House Democrats, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the House passed a bipartisan bill earlier this month to extend the statute of limitations for pandemic unemployment fraud from five to 10 years. The move mirrored what lawmakers did for the Paycheck Protection Program and the Economic Injury and Disaster Loans program in 2022. However, the Senate has yet to take up a companion bill needed to cement the extension, leading House lawmakers to call on their colleagues on Capitol Hill to make it a priority. "We can't afford to let these fraudsters get away with the largest heist of tax dollars in American history," Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee, said Wednesday. "Not only do we have an obligation to taxpayers to recover as much of this money as possible — up to $135 billion — we also need to send a message that we will never falter in going after criminals who take advantage of our support for those in need. … There is no time to waste." According to estimates from the Government Accountability Office, as much as $135 billion in pandemic unemployment insurance programs was lost to fraud during the pandemic. So far, only $5 billion, or less than 4%, has been recovered. Between the Department of Justice and the Department of Labor, there are more than 2,500 uncharged criminal matters or ongoing field investigations related to COVID-era criminal unemployment fraud, according to a fact sheet released by Smith. Unless the statute of limitations is extended by Congress, federal law enforcement will be unable to prosecute these cases. Moylan noted the majority of unemployment fraud during COVID stemmed from "loopholes" so big "you could drive a truck through" them in the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. "They didn't have strict enough paperwork requirements, and, so, basically anybody could apply for it and just attest that they were engaged in self-employed activity … and claim significant amounts of unemployment benefits in the process," Moylan said. He also pointed out how people were applying for financial assistance under the names of dead people or prison inmates. "In California, about a billion dollars worth of fraud was facilitated by making claims on behalf of prisoners in prisons in California," he said. This month, GOP lawmakers, including Smith, called on their Senate colleagues to take up the House's legislation to extend the statute of limitations related to pandemic unemployment fraud. When asked why he thought the Senate had not yet taken up a bill to extend the statute of limitations for pandemic unemployment fraud, Moylan posited that it was "an attention span thing." "This hasn't been top of mind the way that nominations have been in the first part of the year for the Senate, or budget resolution, or now tax conversations, or, you know, whatever the scandal of the day may be," Moylan said. "Those are the things that seem to dominate proceedings in the Senate. We now are in a situation where, if they don't act soon, we're going to lose the ability to prosecute more fraud in this program."

Aurora authorities 'declined' to help search for 2 illegal aliens who escaped Colorado detention facility: ICE
Authorities in Aurora, Colorado, are allegedly declining to help U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) locate two illegal immigrants who escaped from the Denver Contract Detention Facility on Tuesday, the agency said. Illegal immigrants Joel Jose Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 32, and Geilond Vido-Romero, 24, escaped from the facility at some point on Tuesday after they were accounted for during a 2 p.m. facility-wide count. The Aurora Police Department shared a document with Fox News Digital that said staff at the facility became aware of the escapees at approximately 12:35 a.m. on Wednesday. It also said that an Aurora police officer responded to an "outside agency assist" at 5:13 a.m. on Wednesday. Aurora Police Public Information Officer Joe Moylan said the department did not receive a report about the escaped detainees until approximately 2:30 a.m., two hours after the men were confirmed missing and five hours after the facility's power went out. Aurora Mayor Blasts Denver Counterpart For City's Tren De Aragua And Migrant Crisis The document showed that Assistant Facility Director Mohamed Bennani told Aurora police that the power at the detention center went out at around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and the back doors of the facility opened up to the soccer field. Read On The Fox News App Bennani believes that is when both inmates escaped through the back door. The facility staff started an emergency count around midnight and realized both men were missing. As of late Wednesday, the power is still out at the facility, but authorities said they should be able to review camera footage once it is restored. ICE said when agents contacted local authorities, they declined to assist in the search for the two escapees, who were still on the run as of early Thursday morning. They also said they informed state and federal law enforcement partners of the search. "Two detainees escaped March 18 from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Denver Contract Detention Facility, in Aurora, Colorado. Local authorities were notified immediately and declined to assist with the search. ICE also notified additional state and federal law enforcement partners. The aliens are still at large and the search is ongoing," an ICE spokesperson said in a statement. 'Safer Without Him': Columbia Student Claims Classmate Arrested By Ice 'Hates America' Moylan told Fox News Digital that Aurora police will "assist with the apprehension" if the men are confirmed to be in Aurora. "This was a cold event from the time we were notified about it," Moylan said in a statement. "We are working with our federal partners to determine if the escapees have any connection to the city of Aurora. When the time comes that warrants are active and information is confirmed that these men are in Aurora, we will assist with the apprehension." The Adams County Sheriff's Office has said "no one received a request to assist ICE in any capacity, especially to help locate two escaped detainees," according to FOX 31 Denver. Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office also said it was not called. Click To Get The Fox News App The Colorado Bureau of Investigation told FOX 31 it was not assisting ICE with its search for the escapees because it was not contacted by the federal agents. This is a breaking news story and will be updated as information becomes available. Haven woman's death ruled homicide
The young Schuylkill Haven woman found dead Jan. 6 in her home died of fentanyl poisoning, Schuylkill County Coroner David Moylan III said Monday. 'I'm ruling it as death at the hands of another human being, which is homicide,' Moylan said of the death of Haley Mills, 25. According to toxicology results returned from NMS Labs, Horsham, Mills had fentanyl and other drugs in her system, he said. Dr. Wayne Ross, the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy, agreed with Moylan's conclusion, he said. 'The fentanyl was in a lethal range,' he said, without being specific. The toxicology results also showed methamphetamine, amphetamine and alcohol were in Mills' system, but in lower concentrations, said Moylan, who informed Mill's mother of the findings via Zoom Monday. Initial autopsy results had indicated the cause of death was diabetic ketoacidosis, and authorities did not suspect foul play had a role in the young woman's death. However, police emphasized those results were preliminary, and the investigation is ongoing. Police suspect Mills had been dead for 48 hours when a friend found her in her living room at 20 Parkway. State police had said her death appeared to be 'definitely suspicious' and signs of a struggle appeared to be evident and that the victim being found on the stairs appears to be 'consistent with a struggle.' A search warrant of the victim's property approved by Magisterial District Judge David Plachko Monday seeks items that could be helpful in the investigation. State police Trooper Kody Rittenbaugh said a friend of Mills, Hugo Noel, was the last person to see the victim alive. Noel told police he spent all day New Year's day with Mills. He left her Jan. 2 between 5 and 6 p.m., but said she was OK. He told police he went to her house at 2 p.m. Jan. 6 at the request of family members. He found Mills unresponsive on the stairwell and called police. Money was found strewn about the living room, and Mills was wearing only a sweatshirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact Schuylkill Haven State Police at 570-754-4600. Meanwhile, A GoFundMe page, 'Help Haley rest in peace,' seeks $4,000 to defray funeral costs. So far, $1,595 has been raised.
