Aidan O'Brien eyes St Leger bid after Scandinavia leads home Ballydoyle 1-2 in Goodwood Cup
Illinois attempted to make all but Scandinavia drew upsides the 7/4 favourite over a furlong out and the two had it between them, with the concession of 14lb ultimately proving too much for Moore's mount, which went down by three-parts of a length. Sweet William stayed on for third.
O'Brien immediately signalled the St Leger at Doncaster as the big aim for his winner.
'Wayne gave him a lovely ride – in the race at Ascot [Queen's Vase] he was trapped six wide all the way and then at Newmarket Ryan said he felt like a very good horse,' he said.
'Illinois went out there in front and looked to have the race won, but then the other horse got him.
'We went to the Gold Cup [with Illinois] without a preparation and I know we haven't seen the best of him.
'Scandinavia is a typical Justify, he just won't lie down, he puts his head down and won't be beaten.
'Lambourn didn't go to the King George as we had one eye on York for him. It's all out in the open and this horse is ready-made for the Leger, which is where he will go.
'He [Scandinavia] travelled very well through the race, he has a great mind. Lambourn can go for the Voltigeur and then maybe for the Arc.'
O'Brien was also pleased with the performance of the runner-up. 'I thought Ryan did everything perfect today on Illinois. He was out there and had the race won, and then the other horse just came and got him,' he reflected.
'I don't think we've seen the best of Illinois yet because I think we went to the Gold Cup a year too early and his preparation wasn't right to win a Gold Cup. He ran an unbelievable race, and he'll have the rest of the season.'
Alan King's hugely popular Trueshan, winner of the race in 2021, was pulled up sharply by Hollie Doyle at halfway, with news emerging his injury had proved to be a fatal one.
Earlier, O'Brien's 13/8 favourite Dorset Street could only finish fifth to the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained Zavateri (8/1) in the Coral Vintage Stakes.

Kilmallock off to winning start as they see off Newcastle West in Limerick SHC
Limerick SHC: Kilmallock 0-23 Patrickswell 0-18 Kilmallock got off to a flying start in the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship with a 0-23 to 0-18 win over Patrickswell in Newcastle West. Limerick star Shane O'Brien excelled for Kilmallock, despite being sent off midway through the second half, with 10 points while on the field. It was a dominant performance from James Hickeys' side with Patrickswell overly reliant on county duo Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes, who chipped in with 17 of their 18 points. Kilmallock were full value for their victory and led by five at the end of a first half where O'Brien shone. Playing at wing forward for most of the half, O'Brien fired over six points, four of which came from play. He opened the scoring with two minutes on the clock but it was soon cancelled out by a Byrnes free. Blood sub Stephen Quirke typified Kilmallock's attitude with their next score, mere seconds after he came onto the field. Conor Staunton landed the next to stretch their lead to two. Gillane hit the target to cut that gap to one and the sides eventually drew level on 20 minutes at six apiece after Byrnes landed a second free. It was from there that Kilmallock edged ahead. O'Brien (2), Conor Hanley-Clarke, Gearoid Enright and Phelim O'Reilly all landed blows with a solitary Gillane free in response for Patrickswell. That saw the score at 0-12 to 0-7 in the lead up to half time. O'Brien was at it again with the opening score of the second half as Patrickswell struggled to tie down the Kilmallock sharpshooter. Kilmallock had stretched their advantage to eight points by the time O'Brien received a second yellow card, followed by a red, heading into the final quarter but Patrickswell were unable to find a goal to edge their way back in and Killmallock ran out convincing winners. Scorers for Kilmallock: S O'Brien (0-10, 4f), O O'Reilly (0-3), C Staunton and P O'Reilly (0-2 each), S Quirke, C Hanley-Clarke (0-1, 1f), G Enright, D Woulfe, P Connery (1f) and K O'Donnell (0-1 each). My headline 11-2 tip can pull off a famous Glorious Goodwood double in the big sprint on Friday
FIRST came Evs and now there's Mojo as trainer Mick Appleby tries to make it 'Big' in the feature sprint on day four of Glorious Goodwood. Twelve months ago it was Big Evs who took the King George Qatar Stakes for Appleby and Tom Marquand. Advertisement 1 Big Mojo could prove unstoppable in what is sure to be a rapid King George sprint at Goodwood Credit: Alamy On Friday afternoon, live on ITV, the pair are at it again with BIG MOJO and have every chance of pulling off a famous double. This season the crack juvenile has been second in the July Cup and seventh in the Commonwealth Cup. Both of those are over 6f, and I suspect he will love dropping back to 5f. Has a big mojo of a chance. Opposition is headed by last year's runner-up Asfoora who challenges from Australia as well as Khaadem, who blew away cobwebs at Newbury the other day. Advertisement He won this in 2022 from Appleby's Raasel! The action starts with a unique handicap over an extended 2m4f. One-time St Leger hope ALIGN THE STARS might cause a ripple for Charlie Johnston and Christophe Soumillon. A seventh in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot wasn't a bad performance suggesting this trip is not totally out of his compass and his fifth at Newmarket last time wasn't too bad. Advertisement Most read in Horse Racing He's down another pound now and I'm not sure this is the strongest renewal of all time. An each-way chance. The Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes is for three-year-olds over 1m and Opera Ballo was my pick here but I'll go for DIEGO VENTURA now given form on what is sure to be sodden ground. Another handicap in the Golden Mile over, you've guessed it, 1m. BOPEDRO was fifth in this last year off 96 and hasn't won a race since yet goes in now off 98. Advertisement All in all he's a badly handicapped horse especially at the age of nine. That all said, Hector Crouch can have fun with this ride as there is no pressure from a horrible draw in stall 16. The old boy will be dropped out and ridden cold and try and fly home late. I'll chance a few quid each-way. Trainer David O'Meara is great in these races and ground conditions are not issue. Advertisement Finally on ITV a conditions race over 1m1f. LIBERTY LANE has to give some weight away but will probably take all the beating for Clifford Lee and Karl Burke. My hope flopped at Royal Ascot in the Wolferton over a bit further, but he scored well at this track the time before and this level should be well within his reach. When he's on a going day he's quite a decent horse. Advertisement Good luck! McCarthy set to return for Lions as Hansen pushes for inclusion
THE LIONS HAVE made it clear that there will be no freebies this week when it comes to their selection for the third Test on Saturday. Andy Farrell has never picked his teams that way. Often with Ireland, there is clamour for the head coach to give as-yet unused players in his wider squad a chance to start, but Farrell simply picks what he believes is the best team to win the next game. And that's the way it should be at the highest level. Test caps should be truly precious. So it would be a surprise if players are catapulted from being well outside the Lions' plans in the opening two Tests to having a role to play in the third. They're due to name their team early on Thursday morning Irish time. There are certainly some who only narrowly missed out – the likes of Josh van der Flier - who could be in the mix and while it seems likely that Farrell and co. will largely lean on the players who have been involved in the first two Tests, there is a sense that the Lions would benefit from sprinkling in a couple of fresh faces to bring new energy. James Ryan, Jac Morgan, Owen Farrell, and Blair Kinghorn did that last weekend. Ryan, Morgan, and Kinghorn made their Lions Test debuts in the second Test, and the bounce they brought off the bench was pivotal in Farrell's men winning it at the death. One can imagine Mack Hansen, whose foot injury seems to have come good after he missed the first two Tests, doing something similar this time around if he's involved. The Lions coaches have praised him heavily on several occasions, picking out his work rate as a major strength. That effort off the ball has been a huge theme in this Lions campaign, so it would be no surprise to see Hansen involved, whether off the bench or on the right wing. It looks highly likely that Joe McCarthy will come straight back into the side after his recovery from a foot injury. The Irish lock could return to the starting XV alongside Maro Itoje, with Ollie Chessum likely to drop out to make room. Ryan put his hand up for a start too, but he clearly works well as a bench impact option. Advertisement Mack Hansen is back in Lions training. Dan Sheridan / INPHO Dan Sheridan / INPHO / INPHO There may be scope for a back row rejig if Farrell believes Tadhg Beirne, Tom Curry, and Jack Conan's relentless efforts mean they have drawn just a hint too much from the well. The Lions' brain trust will probably have discussed possible reshuffles of the back three and the midfield too, but there will likely be a strong sense of continuity again. Some of the stalwarts of this Lions squad are set to hit big milestones this weekend. Tadhg Furlong is in line for his ninth consecutive Test start for the tourists, a remarkable achievement in such an attritional position. Some doubted whether the Wexford man could get back to the level he has played at in the two Tests so far but he has once again proven that he is a man for the big occasion. Playing this weekend will take Furlong one game clear of Brian O'Driscoll and Conor Murray as Ireland's most-capped Test Lion of the professional era. Furlong is still only 32 and we know that modern-day players sometimes keep rolling into their late 30s, but this weekend will be a major achievement for one of the greatest Lions players in history. Alun Wyn Jones' record of 12 Test caps across four tours remains the best of the pro era but Furlong is in that kind of company. Captain Maro Itoje is also set to earn his ninth consecutive Test cap for the Lions, albeit the first of those was off the bench in 2017. Second row Itoje is still only 30 and you'd have to fancy him to draw level with Jones' 12 Test caps if he fancies another tour to New Zealand in 2029. Tadhg Furlong is set for his ninth consecutive Lions Test start. Billy Stickland / INPHO Billy Stickland / INPHO / INPHO If Owen Farrell is involved again this weekend, as expected, he will reach eight Test caps across four tours, while 27-year-old Tom Curry is hoping for Test cap number six and might be eyeing another Lions tour in 2029. While head coach Farrell can be ruthless when it's required, he is always well aware of these kinds of achievements and records. With Itoje and Furlong entering the most esteemed company, Farrell will surely highlight it to his squad. It also seems likely that the Lions boss will ask his players to finish the job for Garry Ringrose, who has cruelly been ruled out of all three Tests with concussion but remains a key figure in the set-up. Ringrose's maturity and selflessness in self-identifying concussive symptoms after he had been picked to start the second Test is an example for everyone who plays rugby. The Ireland centre sent out an important message to the entire sport – nothing, not even a Lions Test, is worth it when head injury is involved. As he watches on again this weekend, the Lions will be playing for Ringrose.
