The resurrection of Lorde - fans say 'queen of pop is back' as single What Was That drops

Daily Mirror25-04-2025

Move over Brat summer, the queen is back. In an intimate open-air Washington Square Park gig, New Zealand pop star Lorde dropped her first new single since 2021 and now fans are going wild
You've heard of Brat Summer, now it's time for Lorde summer. After an agonising four-year wait, the two-time GRAMMY winner has just dropped her new single What Was That – and fans are going crazy.
Lorde's fanbase have buzzing with anticipation ever since she teased the drop her new single What Was That on TikTok last month. Now, the excitement has been ramped up after a clip of Lorde performing at Washington Square Park on April 23 went viral on Tiktok. Standing on a small wooden stage, she sang her new hit to a small crowd of screaming fans. One video caption read: 'We're still in disbelief.'

Best known for her breakthrough hit 'Royals', released in 2013, Lorde has cemented her position as music royalty. The New Zealander topped charts worldwide, before being awarded Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2014 GRAMMYs. She has since become known for her distinctive layered sound and the catchy melancholia of her lyrics, observed in subsequent top hits like 2017's Green Light.
And, according to TikTok, her latest drop doesn't disappoint. Beginning with a grey street surrounded by brick houses, Lorde can be seen strutting down the road in a white shirt and jeans as the song's bass slowly picks up. 'You already know she's the queen of build ups,' one fan said in a TikTok video, before jumping up and down at the chorus drop.
'THE QUEEN OF POP IS BACK,' another ecstatic TikTok fan declared, also dancing around their room. Another wrote: 'LORDE SUMMERRR IS HERE.'

'The way its already a hit… oh my god,' one user said. 'A minute and a half off the next album and I already have goose-bumps. This my summer,' another wrote.
Former X-Factor stars Jedward even chimed in with their reaction: 'the Lorde has risen to save us'. Another comment took the religious metaphor a little further: 'the pope died so the Lorde has risen'.

TikTokkers have also speculated that 'queen of Brat' Charli XCX was teasing a 'Lorde summer' at this year's Coachella. Videos of the crowd going crazy spread like wildfire after the singer brought Lorde out during her performance of Girl, so confusing – a song written about the pair's fraught friendship.
'I'm so happy we're getting Lorde back this year, dream come true,' one commenter wrote. 'Charli brought her out of hibernation,' another joked.
The star has been lauded for her talents by other influential figures in the music industry. Notably, the late David Bowie was quoted as believing the singer to be the "future of music".
His long time pianist Mike Garson told fans during a Periscope Q&A: "David really liked Lorde, and he felt like she was the future of music, and they had a few wonderful moments together." This came after Lorde was chosen to perform a Bowie tribute at the 2016 BRIT awards.
It's not confirmed when exactly Lorde's new album will be released. However, the hype around 'Lorde Summer' has left fans hoping that it will be out in time for the sunny season.

50p with unusual error making it worth 80 times its face value

An expert explained how to spot the specific error that makes it so valuable Brits have been told to look out for a 50p coin that could be worth more than 80 times its face value. This coin, from 2017, has sold in the past for as much as £40. But why is it so valuable? It's all to do with a specific error that could be hard to spot. ‌ In a video uploaded to social media platform TikTok, an expert called the Coin Collecting Wizard told his followers about the Benjamin Bunny 50 pence piece. ‌ The coin was part of a set of four released in 2017 to honour Beatrix Potter's legacy, which also includes Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten, and Jeremy Fisher. But the Benjamin Bunny coin stands out due to a minting mishap. This error results in Queen Elizabeth II appearing to face the wrong direction. The coin expert said: "Did you know if your Benjamin Bunny 50p has a rotation error, then it's worth a lot more than 50 pence? "So you know what to look for, this 50p error coin is rare all because a part of the design is facing the wrong way." He explained: "The error that's left the Queen's head in a different direction, on the obverse, to the design of Benjamin Bunny on the reverse will have happened in the minting process. "When you flip it round, the Queen should be facing up the same way as Benjamin Bunny. If the Queen is facing any other way, then you have found a very rare rotation error worth money." ‌ This coin is still in circulation so it could be hiding in your change. "Error coins are still legal tender, so long as the original coin is still in circulation too," he continued. "That means you could easily come across one in your change. Oftentimes, error coins will sell for a lot more than their face value. "So this is definitely something you need to be looking for as it can be easily missed. So next time you come across the Benjamin Bunny 50p, flip that rabbit over and check the Queen. Good luck." Last year, The Sun highlighted a case where one of these coins fetched £40 - a whopping 80 times its face value of 50p. And in 2021, another coin from the same batch was reportedly snapped up for an eye-watering £255 on eBay. At the time of reporting, a graded edition of this coin was listed on eBay for £312.72.

British man orders pint in Benidorm but is totally floored by price

A British man recently visited Benidorm and ordered a pint at a well-known bar. He was floored when he was told the price of the tipple, and what it would set him back A British man ordered a pint in Benidorm but was left totally floored by the price. The man, who appears to be no stranger to Spain, was taken aback when he was told how much a drink would set him back at the popular holiday hotspot. Known as the Benidorm Fanatic to his TikTok followers, he told people he headed to Uncle Ron's bar, which is said to be "famous" for its pints, notable for how cheap they're sold for. As he ventured to the venue, he was left astoudned at the price list, as he seriously got a lot for his money. ‌ In the clip, he said: "I tell you what, I believe it's actually a very, very nice pint as well, so it comes to the equivalent of about 84p in British money. Let's go and try it out, shall we? Let's give it a try." ‌ After he made his way to the bar, he added: "So there you go, I'll give you a euro, a €1 pint, and I'll take that. Let's try this €1 pint. Look at that - a nice, clean, cold pint. It's got a nice, good head on it - let's try it. "That is actually one of the best pints I've had in one of the popular bars. That is actually one of the best pints I've had in Benidorm to be honest with you. €1, I'll drink them all day." Since he shared the video, many people have viewed it, and they were quick to comment too. They shared their thoughts, and some posted their own Benidorm stories. One said: "Wow." Another shared: "I was there last week." A third replied: "Lovely pint. Had many." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Bargain." ‌ If you've never heard of Uncle Ron's before, it's a popular spot for British tourists in Benidorm. As well as being known for its cheap drinks, it also serves food too. According to TripAdvisor, the venue serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and also has 3.8/5 rating on average, according to the review platform. Many people say it's worth a visit if you're looking for a reasonable meal and a few drinks while on holiday. In the review section, one person wrote: "Had a fantastic breakfast at Ron's today. Lovely English produce. Great service. Brilliant staff. ‌ "A massive group came in, but they were serviced promptly. Don't know how they manage with so few staff." Another said: "Last day we visited for some lunch before heading to airport. Left full, which is always a good thing. In all my times of going here, never left unhappy at the service nor the food - always really good." A third replied: "We went many times during our two-week holiday. The staff are friendly and extremely hard working day and night. "Cheapest drinks you will find in town and food to suit everyone (daily deal only 6 euros). It's not a stylish 5* restaurant but then you wouldn't expect it. "For drinks just go to the bar like a normal bar. Always busy Sunday and Friday, so expect to book if you want a Sunday lunch. Would we go again? Certainly would!"
