Trump asked Norwegian minister about Nobel Prize, newspaper says

When US President Donald Trump called Norway's finance minister last month to discuss trade tariffs, he also asked about the Nobel Peace Prize, Norwegian business daily Dagens Naeringsliv reported on Thursday.
Several countries including Israel, Pakistan and Cambodia have nominated Trump for brokering peace agreements or ceasefires, and he has said he deserves the Norwegian-bestowed accolade that four White House predecessors received.
'Out of the blue, while Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg was walking down the street in Oslo, Donald Trump called,' Dagens Naeringsliv reported, citing unnamed sources.
'He wanted the Nobel Prize - and to discuss tariffs.'
The White House, Norway's finance ministry and the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
With hundreds of candidates nominated each year, laureates are chosen by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, whose five members are appointed by Norway's parliament according to the will of Swedish 19th century industrialist Alfred Nobel.
The announcement comes in October in Oslo.
The Norwegian newspaper said it was not the first time Trump had brought up the prize in conversation with Stoltenberg, a former secretary general of the NATO military alliance.
It quoted Stoltenberg as saying the call was to discuss trade tariffs and economic cooperation ahead of Trump's call with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Stoere.
Asked if Trump made the Nobel prize an issue, Stoltenberg said: 'I will not go further into the content of the conversation.'
Several White House officials, including US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer were on the call, Stoltenberg said.
The White House on July 31 announced a 15 percent tariff on imports from Norway, the same as the European Union.
Stoltenberg said on Wednesday that Norway and the United States were still in talks regarding the tariffs.

California pushes left, Texas to the right, with US House control and Trump agenda in play

LOS ANGELES: A political standoff in Texas over proposed House maps that could hand Republicans five new seats is poised to enter a new phase Friday, while heavily Democratic California plans to release its own new maps intended to erase all but a sprinkle of the state's GOP House districts in the fight over control of hectic maneuvering in the nation's two most populous states underscored the stakes for both parties in the narrowly divided House that could determine the fate of President Donald Trump's agenda in the second half of his Thursday, Texas Democrats moved closer to ending a nearly two-week walkout that has blocked the GOP's redrawing of US House maps before the 2026 election. The Democrats announced they will return to the state provided that Texas Republicans end a special session and California releases its own redrawn map proposal, both of which were expected to happen Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is expected to call another special session to push through new maps. Democratic lawmakers vowed to take the fight to the California, Gov. Gavin Newsom said his state will hold a Nov. 4 special election to seek approval of redrawn districts intended to give Democrats five more US House seats, in a counterpunch to undercut any gains in Texas.'We can't stand back and watch this democracy disappear district by district all across the country,' Newsom said at what amounted to a campaign kickoff rally for the as-yet unreleased maps that Democrats have been shaping behind closed doors. All 800 National Guard troops mobilized for DC mission: Pentagon

All 800 National Guard troops ordered to the US capital by President Donald Trump to aid law enforcement have now been mobilized, the Pentagon said Thursday. Trump ordered the deployment – following a similar move during protests in Los Angeles in June – as part of what he called a crackdown on crime in Washington, where police data shows violent offenses are down. 'As of today, all 800 Army and Air National Guardsmen are mobilized... as part of Joint Task Force DC, and they are now here in our capital,' Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson told reporters. The troops will assist the DC Metropolitan Police Department and federal partners with monument security, community patrols, protecting federal facilities, and traffic control posts, Wilson said. They will remain until 'law and order has been restored,' as determined by the president. The US Army said the Guard's initial mission is to provide a visible presence in key public areas as a deterrent to crime. They will not arrest, search, or direct law enforcement but have the authority to temporarily detain individuals to prevent imminent harm. Weapons will remain in the armory unless needed, the Army said. Trump announced the deployment and a federal takeover of the city's police department on Monday, vowing 'to take our capital back.' Late Thursday, US Attorney General Pam Bondi signed an order granting the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration the executive powers of Washington police chief. The move follows Republican criticism that the Democratic-led capital is plagued by crime, homelessness, and mismanagement. Police data, however, shows violent crime has fallen significantly from 2023 to 2024, after a post-pandemic surge. The Washington deployment comes after Trump sent the National Guard and Marines to quell unrest in Los Angeles earlier this year – the first time since 1965 a US president deployed Guard forces against a state governor's wishes. Unlike in the states, National Guard forces in Washington already report directly to the president.

Indian PM Modi vows to protect farmers, pushes self-reliance amid Trump tariff tensions

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the country on Friday to move toward more self-reliance, manufacture everything from fertilizers to jet engines and EV batteries, and vowed to protect farmers in the face of a trade conflict with Washington. Modi was addressing the nation on the occasion of its Independence Day at a time New Delhi has been struggling with US President Donald Trump's punishing tariffs imposed on Indian goods and the collapse of trade talks, largely due to differences over imports of American farm and dairy products. 'Farmers, fishermen, cattle rearers are our top priorities,' Modi said in his customary annual address from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi. 'Modi will stand like a wall against any policy that threatens their interests. India will never compromise when it comes to protecting the interests of our farmers,' he said. Modi did not mention the tariffs or the US in his speech that lasted nearly two hours. Last week, Trump imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's continued imports of Russian oil in a move that sharply escalated tensions between the two nations. The new import tax will raise duties on some Indian exports to as high as 50 percent – among the highest levied on any US trading partner. Modi has never spoken about the tariffs directly, only alluding to them in a speech last week, where he swore to protect the interests of farmers, even if it came at a personal price. The tariffs threaten to disrupt India's access to its largest export market, where shipments totaled nearly $87 billion in 2024, hitting sectors like textiles, footwear, gems and jewelry. Trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed after five rounds of negotiations over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases. On Thursday, the Indian foreign ministry said that it hoped relations with the United States would move forward based on mutual respect and shared interests, seeking to temper worries that ties were headed downhill.
