‘Let's try a freak': How this chaotic comedian landed TV's most wholesome show

The Great Australian Bake Off has a very particular mood and aesthetic. Like the iconic British series it's based on, this cooking competition is all scones and jam, bright colours and big feelings. It's wholesome family viewing, punctuated by giggles and gags.
Which is why many local comedy fans might have been a bit perplexed by the casting of Tom Walker this season. Not because he isn't talented. But because this 'unhinged' comedian, trained mime and Twitch streamer is, to my knowledge, the first co-host whose stand-up includes graphic sex scenes with a coat.
'After the audition I got a text that I read to my parents, and it made them laugh the hardest that they've ever laughed, which is kind of hurtful, as a comedian,' Walker says before the series' launch. 'The text said that everyone was 'pleasantly surprised'.'
He adds: 'There comes a time when a production has to throw up its hands and say, 'Let's try a freak on here!''
But, however unlikely off-screen, Walker isn't at all out of place in the Bake Off shed. In this upcoming eighth season, he perfectly matches the goofy and warm energy of returning co-host Natalie Tran – who also made her name in online comedy – and has a fresh haircut and rotation of bright cardigans to blend in.
'My mullet was the first casualty of getting to be in the Bake-Off shed – and I understand why they did it,' Walker says, laughing. 'Something to keep in mind is I am approximately triple the size of everyone else. I would have been quite an intimidating presence if they had not sanded down some of the rough edges.
'I'm a 'loomer': I naturally gravitate towards standing out of focus in the background of shot. If you've seen the movie It Follows [a horror film in which people are slowly stalked by others who are possessed by a supernatural entity], that's where my presence most naturally gravitates.'
Tran admits that, unfamiliar with his stand-up, she watched Walker's 2020 special Very Very (yes, the one with the coat) the night before meeting him and had some questions. 'It was fantastic! But I was like, 'Wow, they're going to let him [on the show]? OK, I love it.''
Of course, his usual material needed tweaking. Walker confirms there was a ban on him referencing poo or other bodily products, 'which is kind of like telling Tyson he can't uppercut'. But Tran says what stood out to her was how 'polite' and 'nurturing' he was after production started.
'I know that's probably not the first thing that you think of, but he brought such a caring energy to the shed,' she says. 'He was exactly what we needed.'
Walker is, after all, filling the spot held by Cal Wilson, who died after a short battle with a rare cancer in October 2023. The beloved comedian left the show abruptly in season seven, leaving Tran to host on her own, and died shortly after filming finished. This new season is the first time Tran and the rest of the crew were on set since Wilson's death.
'It was tough,' Tran says. 'The thing that I had to focus on was that Cal really loved the show, and it's a real privilege to be able to work on it. There were obviously sad moments, but it was a chance to feel closer to her, too. We now have a tree for Cal in the park [where we film].'
It also helped, Tran says, that Walker was longtime friends with Wilson and shared the loss. The pair had starred alongside each other in the short-lived Australian version of improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway? in 2016.

'She was the most warm and kind person that I've ever met in comedy,' he says, slowly and with emphasis. 'Comedy is an industry populated by the meanest, funniest people that you could possibly meet, and no one had a bad word to say about Cal. Everybody loved her.'
Was there any pressure in being asked to step into her shoes?
'I just want to make her proud. She loved this show – she truly loved it. And I want to take this thing that she loved and shepherded, and keep it safe in some small way.'
Despite the absurd and ironic nature of much of his work, Walker has a real reverence for the franchise, which is arguably the most earnest show on television. He talks about looking up to Mel Buttle and Claire Hooper, who hosted for four seasons from 2015 to 2022, as well as the 'inspirational' original British hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, who helmed the show for seven years.

It's worth noting, however, that the latter duo's epic run has now been surpassed by the show's present co-host, Noel Fielding. The Mighty Boosh co-creator was considered a similarly strange pick when announced in 2017 – this was the guy who created characters such as Old Gregg and the Crack Fox – but he's since become the pillar of the British version of the show, his spiky surreal comedy softened into whimsy. Strangely enough, it matches the chaotic energy of the kitchen – and it's hard not to see that as a road map to Walker's casting.
'[Each show] is allowed one weird guy,' Walker says. 'It's a goth over there. Here, it's some weirdo online fella who's also a mime and clown. We're duelling freaks! I know Cal would get a huge kick out of me doing this job because it's such a left-field pick. I know exactly the laugh she would be doing.'

Yungblud plays surprise gig on London's famous Denmark Street as he opens store and fan club

Yungblud gave fans attending the launch of his Beautifully Romanticised Accidently Traumatized fan club in London a surprise street performance. The 27-year-old rocker announced via social media that he was set to open his "first ever store and fan club" in the city on August 7, at 20 Denmark Street. And those who headed down to the venue on Thursday (07.08.25) were in for a treat, as the topless Fleabag rocker put on an impromptu set dressed only in a Union Jack kilt. Fans were treated to performances of The Funeral, Strawberry Lipstick, Zombie, and Lovesick Lullaby. The famous street is steeped in music history, with the likes of The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Sir Elton John, The Kinks, Black Sabbath, and The Sex Pistols having all either recorded, rehearsed or lived there. Yungblud had an important message about keeping the street - which was nicknamed London's Tin Pan Alley - alive. He said: "I f****** love you. Welcome to Denmark Street. "Keep Denmark Street alive. Keep British f****** music alive. Keep British music powerful. I love you all so much. Get home safe and I'll see you tomorrow." Inviting fans to come on down, Yungblud - whose real name is Dominic Harrison - had penned on X: "I'm so excited to announce the opening of my first ever store and fan club. Welcome to 'beautifully romanticised accidentally traumatized'. Number 20 Denmark Street in the heart of central London. We open on the 7th of August and you're all invited. It's the biggest party I've ever thrown. (sic)" Yungblud explained to fans that the venue is "a place to be yourself and find people with similar ideas to you." He wrote: "This building is a literal physical space where you can place your hands upon its bricks and belong. Here we have built a place to be yourself and find people with similar ideas to you. Whether it be to buy the clothes we make, come for a coffee, buy a beer, watch music, do an art class or just come and play pool you're welcome, all we demand from you is that you spread the love." Yungblud subsequently explained the significance of the venue's location. He wrote on the micro-blogging platform: "This street, Denmark Street has paved the way for The Best of British music since the 1950s. I grew up on the street. It has always been my dream to have a building here. YOU made that dream come true and im eternally in your debt. I'm running this place with my best friends so so please come and support to keep this heart beating. "Come down and celebrate. "Sign up. I'll see you there. (sic)" Yungblud actually teased details of his plans in July, revealing that the venue will feature a "leopard pool table". Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, he explained: "I want people to hang out, meet and have a physical space to make real connections in this virtual world. There will be a leopard pool table downstairs."

The jaw-dropping fortune late cricket great Shane Warne left his three kids revealed including Mornington Peninsula estate and millions in foreign shares

The late Shane Warne left an extraordinary fortune to his loved ones, with court documents now revealing exactly how the Aussie cricket great divided his estate, and how his son Jackson is honouring him with a project they once planned together. Warne, affectionately known as 'Warnie', died suddenly on March 4, 2022, aged 52, after suffering a heart attack while holidaying in Thailand. His last will, dated December 3, 2021 and released by the Supreme Court almost a year after his death, stated that his three children, Brooke, 28, Jackson, 26, and Summer, 23, were each to inherit 31 per cent of his estate. The $20.7 million fortune included a Portsea home on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula valued at $6.5 million, a $1.2 million deposit on a St Kilda property, $5 million in a Commonwealth Bank account, more than $260,000 in shares, $514,000 in overseas bank accounts, and $2.85 million in foreign shares. The King of Spin's prized personal vehicle collection, a BMW, a Mercedes-Benz and a Yamaha motorbike, worth $375,500, was left to Jackson, whom he described as his "best mate". The remainder of his estate went to his younger brother, Jason (two per cent), and Jason's children, Tyla and Sebastian (two and a half per cent each). Nothing was left to his ex-wife and mother of his children, Simone Callahan, nor to his former fiancée, British actor Elizabeth Hurley. Warne, regarded as one of cricket's greatest-ever players, went on to build a thriving business career after retiring from the sport in 2007. He founded gin label 708 Gin in 2019, with one of its varieties winning gold at the Australian Gin Awards, and launched his own fragrance, SW23, in 2020. He was also a prominent fixture in the commentary box, primarily with Fox Sports (formerly Fox Cricket) and the Nine Network. It was perhaps his gift of the gab that was passed on to Jackson, who on Wednesday announced his new podcast, 'Warnes Way', inspired by his late father. Jackson revealed that the podcast was an idea the father-son duo had discussed back in 2018. "Dad was talking to Fox about doing one together and I liked the dynamic of a father-son podcast," Jackson told the Herald Sun. "It was in February this year that I fully committed to doing it." Jackson, a professional poker player, revealed that he set up a studio in his father's old office so it "feels like he's there". "We've got all his memorabilia, his book, his ashtray, it's really special," he said. Jackson's girlfriend, Kiah Broadsmith, is helping with filming and editing the series, which has already featured guests including Eddie McGuire, Aaron Finch and Andrew Bassat. "One of my biggest fears is I used to be so shy and be so introverted," Jackson admitted. "Ever since I got on stage at dad's memorial and did my speech it was a weight lifted off my shoulders and I felt comfortable to talk." The 26-year-old also described the podcast as "a bit of therapy for me". "I don't see a therapist, but when I talk to people like Mark Howard and Eddie McGuire, it's so personal and we talk about stories with dad," he said. After announcing the launch of 'Warne's Way' on social media, Jackson was showered with praise from family, friends, and fans alike. "So exciting so proud of you and Kiah," mum Simone, 55, wrote with love heart emojis. "SO SO SOOOO AMAZING! Proud is an understatement!!!!!! You and @kiahbroadsmithh have worked SO hard! So proud of you both xxxx," Brooke added, while Summer commented: "Go Jacko!!". Alongside the podcast, Jackson and his sisters continue their father's work through the Shane Warne Legacy foundation, which promotes heart health awareness and provides free heart checks.

Wembley Stadium ‘reviewing alcohol policy for live concerts' following Oasis fan death

Wembley Stadium is said to be reviewing its alcohol policy for live music concerts following the death of 45-year-old Lee Claydon during an Oasis reunion performance last weekend. Lee Claydon, from Bournemouth, fell from an upper tier at the arena in front of nearly 100,000 fans during the post-show firework display on Saturday (02.08.25) night. According to The Sun, Lee's father has been told his son slipped on spilt beer. 'I've been told that it was an accident waiting to happen,' he said. 'All I really know is there was beer everywhere, he slipped, and we don't know the rest of it.' The incident is now said to have prompted stadium bosses to consider applying the same alcohol restrictions enforced during football matches to music events. Under Football Association rules, fans attending matches are prohibited from consuming alcohol in the seated areas – a policy designed to combat binge drinking and reduce disorder. Concertgoers at Wembley, however, are currently permitted to carry alcoholic drinks into their seats. That policy is now said to be under review following Lee's death. A Wembley Stadium source told The Sun: 'Safety is paramount at Wembley and the measures in place are reviewed regularly. 'The Oasis gigs have seen significant alcohol sales and in light of Saturday's incident, bosses are considering bringing in a limit or restriction to help maintain safety.' The tragedy was apparently not the only incident across the weekend at the Oasis shows in London. According to The Sun, on Sunday (03.08.25), a second fan reportedly suffered a serious head injury after falling down a staircase in Block 107 at Wembley. Stewards were seen spreading sand to absorb spilled drinks at the scene. A witness was quoted by The Sun saying: 'There was beer everywhere.' Wembley officials confirmed the venue is regularly assessed. A spokesperson said: 'We work closely with event owners, local authorities, the Sports Ground Safety Authority and police to deliver events to high standards of safety, security and service for everyone attending or working in the venue.' The incidents took place during Oasis' highly anticipated reunion tour, which marked the band's return to major UK venues after years of speculation and estrangement between founding members Liam Gallagher, 52, and Noel Gallagher, 58. The Wembley concerts formed part of a larger UK and European tour commemorating the 30th anniversary of the band's debut album Definitely Maybe, released in 1994. Their tour includes multiple stadium dates in Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff and Dublin, with the Wembley shows drawing some of the biggest crowds of the summer. The band has not performed together since their split in 2009, making the 2025 tour one of the most significant British live music events in recent years. Oasis rose to fame in the 1990s during the height of the Britpop movement, with hits such as Wonderwall, Live Forever and Don't Look Back in Anger. Their 1996 performances at Knebworth remain some of the most iconic in UK music history, attended by more than 250,000 fans across two nights.
