Today's Wordle #1524 Hints And Answer For Thursday, August 21st

It's Thor's Day, which means Odin has his day yesterday, which also means that I handed out an extra riddle for Wordle Wednesday. Today, I give you the answer. This was the riddle:
Where can you finish a book without finishing a sentence?
The answer: Prison. (I'll allow jail, though you really serve sentences in prison; jail is more of a staging grounds).
Also there's a new NYT game called Pips which you should check out. I did a write-up about it which you can read here.
Okay, Wordle time!
Looking for yesterday's Wordle? Check out hints, clues and the answer right here.
Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:
Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.
Today's Wordle Hints And Answer
Wordle Bot's Starting Word: SLATE
My Starting Word Today: SPINE (480 words remaining)
The Hint: Enthusiastic praise.
The Clue: This Wordle begins with a vowel.
Okay, spoilers below! The answer is coming!

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.
I wish I'd gone with SPITE instead of SPINE today. That would have narrowed my remaining words a lot more off the bat. SPINE left me with a whopping 480 solutions, and ALERT only cut that down to 9, though I did have three yellow boxes. The Wordle Bot did not approve of my next guess, TOWEL (suggesting MOTEL instead) but I only had one possible solution left: EXTOL for the win!
I get 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot. The Bot gets 1 point for guessing in three and another for beating me. Our August totals widen once again:
Erik: 8 points
Wordle Bot: 15 points
Extol comes from Latin extollere 'to raise up, exalt, praise highly,' formed from ex- 'out, up' + tollere 'to lift, raise.' It entered Middle English via Old French (extoller) in the 14th century, keeping the sense of 'praise highly.'

Man charged with killing an ‘American Idol' exec and husband will undergo mental evaluation

A man charged with fatally shooting an 'American Idol' music supervisor and her husband in their Los Angeles home will undergo mental evaluation to determine whether he's fit to stand trial, a judge ruled Wednesday. Raymond Boodarian, 22, was set to be arraigned in a courthouse in Los Angeles but did not enter a plea. A judge suspended the criminal proceedings against him while a psychiatrist examines him to determine his competency. He's charged with two counts of murder in the killing of longtime 'American Idol' producer Robin Kaye and her husband Thomas Deluca, both 70, who were shot when they came home unexpectedly during a burglary on July 10. A judge at a court that specializes in mental health will consider the evaluation and decide whether Boodarian will proceed toward trial or be placed in a state hospital. Boodarian stood behind a window in a custody area of the courtroom, and appeared to try to remain out of sight. His attorney declined comment, and the district attorney's office had no immediate comment. Boodarian will undergo the same evaluation in the same small courthouse on Hollywood Boulevard where a man charged with stalking Jennifer Aniston and driving into the front gate of her home was recently found to be not competent to go to trial. Police said they responded to a 911 call about a burglary at the home of Kaye and Deluca in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles. Police said they found no sign of forced entry or other trouble and left. Four days later the couple's bodies were found, shot to death, when officers carried out a welfare check at the home. Boodarian was arrested the following day. District Attorney Nathan Hochman later said in a community meeting that investigators believe the couple arrived home unexpectedly while Boodarian was burglarizing it. He shot them with their own gun and later called 911 himself, Hochman said. Kaye had been with 'American Idol' for more than 15 years and was working on the upcoming season of the hit singing competition TV series at the time of her death. She had also worked in the music departments of several other productions, including 'The Singing Bee,' 'Hollywood Game Night,' 'Lip Sync Battle,' and several Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants.

Male lion, female chimpanzee pass away at Kansas City Zoo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium said goodbye to two longtime friends on Wednesday. According to the KC Zoo, the two animals who passed were 20-year-old male lion Shakarri and 29-year-old female chimpanzee Teeoni. Shakarri was euthanized as his quality of life had diminished, while Teeoni had been battling heart disease for over a year. Shakarri reportedly died of age-related health issues and had recently stopped responding to medical treatment before the decision was made. He was one of four cubs born to parents Dumisani and Jean on June 28, 2005. Overland Park Police Department uses 'shadow buddies' to help children in crisis KC Zoo says some of Shakaari's favorite things were canned goat's milk and chewing on small plastic tubes. Shakaari is survived by his sister Zuri. Teeoni, however, had been battling heart disease, and two masses were found on other organs in her final days as well. The zoo decided to euthanize her when it was clear treatment would not improve her life. Teeoni came to the KC Zoo in 2003 with her twin sister, TeeToo, and her mother, Rachel. Both Teeoni and TeeToo had similar heart conditions, leading the zoo to believe there may be a familial predisposition. TeeToo has also passed. Download WDAF+ for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV Teeoni gave birth to Ruw in 2016 and formed close relationships with her nieces, Gracie, and her brother, Milo. KC Zoo says Teeoni was incredibly intelligent and stood out when it came to activities like fishing with a stick and trusted staff with regular checkups. 'These iconic Zoo residents were incredible ambassadors for their respective species; Shakarri and Teeoni will both be dearly missed,' KC Zoo wrote on Facebook. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
