Over 130 drivers pulled over for failing to stop as Metro officer used crosswalk
It was part of a safety campaign to alert drivers to pay more attention to pedestrians. Police said it's already been a deadly year in Clark County with an average of two pedestrians a week getting killed in the first six weeks of the year.
On Tuesday, police from Las Vegas Metropolitan police, North Las Vegas police, and Clark County School District police came together for four hours — as they do several times a year — to remind drivers to be alert when around pedestrians and crosswalks.
Have a Heart campaign promotes pedestrian safety awareness
The officer, dressed in a large heart costume, used a crosswalk repeatedly on Rainbow Boulevard and Dewey Drive as motorcycle officers waited nearby to nab drivers for failing to stop.
In all, 136 drivers were pulled over and 127 were ticketed for either failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk or passing a vehicle that stopped at a crosswalk to allow a pedestrian the right of way.
'If you can't see one of our costumed officers, you aren't going to see one of the kiddos on their way to and from school,' the Clark County School District Police Department posted on its Facebook page.
According to CCSDPD, 14 pedestrians have died already this year and 85 students were hit by cars on their way to or from school.
Drivers traveling at 30 mph or more are unlikely to notice pedestrians unless they are actively looking for them, police said. The risks become even more severe at higher speeds.
A news release for the annual Have a Heart, Stop for Pedestrians campaign said a pedestrian hit by a vehicle traveling at 45 mph has a 90 percent chance of not surviving.
The campaign suggests drivers follow these rules:
If you are moving more than 15 mph, you need to scan right and left to see pedestrians, they won't be in your natural field of vision.
Make eye contact and let the pedestrian know you have seen them.
In an active school zone or crossing zone, it is unlawful to pass another vehicle, no matter the speed of the slowest driver. Drivers may not turn right or left when there is a pedestrian in any of the lanes of travel in the direction they are turning.
'Please SLOW DOWN and keep an eye out for those pedestrians,' CCSDPD said.

Student arrested near North Las Vegas school after allegedly tossing AR-15 in bush
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Police arrested a student near a North Las Vegas school in April who was allegedly in possession of an AR-15 and told police he and his friends were planning to steal cars after school, according to a police report 8 News Now obtained. On April 14, near Swainston Middle School in North Las Vegas, officers with the Clark County School District Police Department were patrolling an area near Fort Niagara Avenue and Bethel Bay Street due to 'recent fights and potential narcotic activity,' according to police. Officers reportedly came across three boys, and one of them led officers on a chase before being arrested. A witness told CCSDPD that he saw one of the boys throw a gun in the bushes. Officers found a Ruger AR-15 with a Tasco optic containing a magazine with 28 rounds, according to the arrest report. Police said the student 'may have been in possession of the firearm during school hours,' and one of the boys revealed they 'were going to steal cars after school.' CCSDPD arrested a student on several charges, including carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. CCSDPD categorized the gun incident as happening off property. Officers seized a total of 36 guns from August 2024 to the end of May. In February, a parent expressed concern to the school board over guns after a student brought a firearm to Tom Williams Elementary School. Newly hired CCSD Superintendent Jhone Ebert was asked whether she wanted to expand or continue the safety measures put in place. 'Yeah. So the safety measures that have been put in place, the alerts, right? We know every faculty member now does have access to the alert system as well as a single point of entry.' Ebert said. 'Those types of things are best practice. And we will continue making sure that we finish out the work at the middle level and continue at the elementary level as well.' A survey on CCSD's website shows that only 64% of students at Swainston Middle School reported feeling safe in a survey done in February. Sixty-two percent of students felt that 'students at this school threaten to hurt other students.' Downtown Las Vegas businesses brace for weekend protests
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Marco Lopez, co-owner of Juice Stars, told 8 News Now his business was vandalized earlier this week during the Las Vegas protest downtown. Anti-ICE expletives were spray-painted on his storefront, and he spent nearly two hours cleaning it up. 'At first I was like 'ugh really,' but I came in, grabbed a razor blade, spray bottle, and just had to sit there and scrape slowly,' Lopez said. He is now preparing his business for the protests planned this weekend. 'I mean we're gonna prep as best we can, bring all our stuff inside, get stuff put away, possibly just take everything money-wise, valuable out of here,' said Lopez. The owner also plans to monitor the store's security cameras, since the business will be closed during those hours. Other employees working at downtown businesses, who wanted to remain anonymous, told 8 News Now they are taking precautions. Many did not want to be named out of fear of retribution. 'The company we partnered with next door had to lock up their doors just as a precaution and for extra safety as well,' a woman told 8 News Now. She explained although they hope things won't get out of hand over the weekend, they are prepared to close their doors if it does. 'To close up early would impact our sales obviously, but we just want to make sure everyone's safe out there, especially our employees,' she said. The downtown protest is expected to take place at the federal courthouse tomorrow from 5-7 p.m. According to a press release, it is meant to be 'peaceful protests against the Trump administration.'
