Student arrested near North Las Vegas school after allegedly tossing AR-15 in bush

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Police arrested a student near a North Las Vegas school in April who was allegedly in possession of an AR-15 and told police he and his friends were planning to steal cars after school, according to a police report 8 News Now obtained. On April 14, near Swainston Middle School in North Las Vegas, officers with the Clark County School District Police Department were patrolling an area near Fort Niagara Avenue and Bethel Bay Street due to 'recent fights and potential narcotic activity,' according to police. Officers reportedly came across three boys, and one of them led officers on a chase before being arrested. A witness told CCSDPD that he saw one of the boys throw a gun in the bushes. Officers found a Ruger AR-15 with a Tasco optic containing a magazine with 28 rounds, according to the arrest report. Police said the student 'may have been in possession of the firearm during school hours,' and one of the boys revealed they 'were going to steal cars after school.' CCSDPD arrested a student on several charges, including carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. CCSDPD categorized the gun incident as happening off property. Officers seized a total of 36 guns from August 2024 to the end of May. In February, a parent expressed concern to the school board over guns after a student brought a firearm to Tom Williams Elementary School. Las Vegas student found with gun on elementary school campus 'Lord forbid that we have an incident in our community,' Abraham Caramejo told CCSD's board of trustees. Newly hired CCSD Superintendent Jhone Ebert was asked whether she wanted to expand or continue the safety measures put in place. 'Yeah. So the safety measures that have been put in place, the alerts, right? We know every faculty member now does have access to the alert system as well as a single point of entry.' Ebert said. 'Those types of things are best practice. And we will continue making sure that we finish out the work at the middle level and continue at the elementary level as well.' A survey on CCSD's website shows that only 64% of students at Swainston Middle School reported feeling safe in a survey done in February. Sixty-two percent of students felt that 'students at this school threaten to hurt other students.' CCSDPD closed out the 2024-2025 school year with a decrease in the number of guns officers seized compared to last year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Las Vegas valley police departments target speeding near schools

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — DUI, speeding, and expired tags are just a few of the offenses police said they caught from a Tuesday morning blitz around schools and school zones in the valley. According to a Facebook post from the Clark County School District Police Department, around 30 officers from departments around the valley participated in the blitz to help 'keep the speeds slow and the safeties high.' 'Apparently a lot of drivers left their house without a proper breakfast this morning… so we gave them a heaping scoop of traffic safety,' the department wrote. CCSDPD said a few 'highlights' from the morning detail included a man in Boulder City who was closed at 52 and paced at 70 in a 35 mph zone just down the street from where kids were arriving at a school. When officers pulled him over, he was taken in for DUI, the post said. Another driver was speeding through a school zone and told officers she was 'on her way to the DMV' when it was revealed she was without insurance and her temporary registration had been expired since July, in addition to some warrants, police said. The last driver CCSDPD described 'barreled' through a 15 mph school zone at 46 mph. 'Naaaaa, don't mind us… or the kids, or all the parents, or all those cars…,' police wrote. Participating departments included the CCSDPD, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Boulder City Police Department, Henderson Police Department, and Nevada State Police. Over 130 drivers pulled over for failing to stop as Metro officer used crosswalk

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The police officer dressed in a large red heart costume stood out while walking across the street yet more than 130 drivers were pulled over for not stopping to let him cross the street in a marked crosswalk. It was part of a safety campaign to alert drivers to pay more attention to pedestrians. Police said it's already been a deadly year in Clark County with an average of two pedestrians a week getting killed in the first six weeks of the year. On Tuesday, police from Las Vegas Metropolitan police, North Las Vegas police, and Clark County School District police came together for four hours — as they do several times a year — to remind drivers to be alert when around pedestrians and crosswalks. Have a Heart campaign promotes pedestrian safety awareness The officer, dressed in a large heart costume, used a crosswalk repeatedly on Rainbow Boulevard and Dewey Drive as motorcycle officers waited nearby to nab drivers for failing to stop. In all, 136 drivers were pulled over and 127 were ticketed for either failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk or passing a vehicle that stopped at a crosswalk to allow a pedestrian the right of way. 'If you can't see one of our costumed officers, you aren't going to see one of the kiddos on their way to and from school,' the Clark County School District Police Department posted on its Facebook page. According to CCSDPD, 14 pedestrians have died already this year and 85 students were hit by cars on their way to or from school. Drivers traveling at 30 mph or more are unlikely to notice pedestrians unless they are actively looking for them, police said. The risks become even more severe at higher speeds. A news release for the annual Have a Heart, Stop for Pedestrians campaign said a pedestrian hit by a vehicle traveling at 45 mph has a 90 percent chance of not surviving. The campaign suggests drivers follow these rules: If you are moving more than 15 mph, you need to scan right and left to see pedestrians, they won't be in your natural field of vision. Make eye contact and let the pedestrian know you have seen them. In an active school zone or crossing zone, it is unlawful to pass another vehicle, no matter the speed of the slowest driver. Drivers may not turn right or left when there is a pedestrian in any of the lanes of travel in the direction they are turning. 'Please SLOW DOWN and keep an eye out for those pedestrians,' CCSDPD said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. CCSD police have seized guns, ammunition, and drugs

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Clark County school police have peeled back the curtain on the guns officers have found on campuses this school year. Six months into the new school year, officers with the Clark County School District Police Department have seized 24 guns. Twelve of them belonged to students. Through a public records request, 8 News Now obtained several photos and police reports starting from August 2024 on the guns CCSDPD seized. According to a police report dated Sept. 17, officers arrived at Del Sol Academy to find a student and staff member in a struggle. An assistant principal had wrapped his arms around the student and took him to the ground. Police said the student had a handgun near his pants leg and tried reaching for it. On Oct. 2, the principal at Swainston Middle School found a loaded gun in a student's backpack, according to a police report. A parent had called the school after that student showed another child the gun. A hard lockdown was placed at Ullom Elementary School on Dec. 20 after a child was caught on surveillance video with a brown handgun, according to police, but it was an air gun. Police visited the child's home and they said officers found an unsecured AR-15, which was confiscated. According to a police report, officers said the AR-15 'lacked essential safety mechanisms that could mitigate risks associated with firearm ownership.' At Canyon Springs High School last month, police confiscated a loaded gun that had one round in the chamber. CCSDPD arrested Ar'Voni Jett on Jan 14. Police found more rounds inside Jett's vehicle, according to his arrest report. Jett told officers he got out of his car and approached a few teens over a stolen chain. A witness contacted a campus security monitor after seeing Jett pulling at the front of his pants like he had a weapon, according to police. When Jett tried getting back inside his car, he locked himself out. Jett was reportedly high on marijuana. The Clark County School District's policy states any student caught with a gun on campus is immediately expelled. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
