JOHOR BAHRU : A company owner suffered losses amounting to RM1.8 million after allegedly being duped by an online investment scam in October last year.
Johor police chief M Kumar said the 66-year-old man had come across an advertisement on social media that promised high returns in a short time.
Enticed by the offer, he clicked on the link provided to learn more and was offered a 200% return on his investment within three months.
'The victim made payments totalling RM1.8 million to several bank accounts between November 2024 and January this year. He also downloaded an application and created an account, as instructed by the suspect, to monitor his investments.
'However, no returns were received, and the scammer gave various excuses. The victim believed he had been scammed when he could no longer contact the scammer and found himself blocked from accessing the application,' he said in a statement.
He said the businessman lodged a police report yesterday, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.
Kumar advised the public to be vigilant and not be easily deceived by online investment schemes promising quick and attractive returns.

Klang River restoration lays bare haunting finds — over 10 bodies including baby discovered since 2022, along with fridges, motorbikes

SHAH ALAM – More than 10 bodies, including that of an infant, have been discovered during the ongoing Klang River Flood Mitigation Project under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) initiative, shedding light on a grim reality behind the restoration of the river. As reported by Sinar Harian, Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) managing director, Syaiful Azmen Nordin, said the discovery of bodies is not an isolated incident but has occurred almost monthly since dredging and widening works began on November 1, 2022. 'So far, we have handed over more than 10 bodies to the police and fire department for further investigation,' he was quoted as saying. Aside from the grim finds, the team has also encountered severe pollution, having retrieved various heavy waste items such as refrigerators, lorry tyres, bed frames, mattresses, sofas and even motorcycles from the riverbed. 'I honestly don't understand how a fridge ends up in the river,' he said, describing the current level of pollution as severe and a challenge to the dredging efforts. The mitigation project forms part of SMG's holistic efforts to increase the Klang River's capacity by up to 40 per cent, while also rehabilitating the ecosystem and improving water quality to at least Class III on the Water Quality Index (WQI).

‘It's not just women': Govt to boost fertility rate with inclusive solutions, says minister

BUTTERWORTH, June 16 — The government is ramping up efforts to increase Malaysia's total fertility rate (TFR), which has been declining over the past 15 years, by promoting inclusive solutions to include men. Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the country's TFR is at 1.7 this year, a slight improvement from 1.6 last year, but remains below the replacement level of 2.1. 'This is still not enough, which is why we are expanding awareness through more programmes and roadshows. Sometimes, women are not the problem - men could also be the cause of the low fertility.' Nancy said this to reporters here today after officiating the Women's Inspiration Programme: Womenpreneurs - Shaping The Future Economy, organised by the Department of Women's Development in collaboration with the Penang Women's Development Corporation. She said the national roadshow began in Sabah and will soon continue across other states. 'There are several other programmes under the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) that address fertility issues, with solutions catering to both genders,' she said. On today's event, Nancy said the programme provided an avenue for women entrepreneurs to learn, share strategies, and build support networks. She reaffirmed the government's commitment to enhancing women's leadership across multiple sectors, noting this is a key objective of the National Women's Policy and the Women's Development Action Plan 2025–2030, launched on International Women's Day in March. Today, women make up 49 per cent of Malaysia's population, but out of a total of 222 Members of Parliament, only 13.36 per cent are women, which is still a huge gap, she said. 'However, there has been encouraging progress as 38.9 per cent of top positions in the public sector are now held by women, and women also account for 32.2 per cent of board members in publicly listed companies,' she remarked. At the ministerial level, Nancy said her ministry is nurturing future female leaders through initiatives like the Women's Leadership Apprenticeship Programme (Perantis), launched last year, which has mentored over 1,200 women through guidance from 25 prominent figures across 10 major sectors. She said, this year, the programme will be expanded with RM5 million in funding, involving 100 mentors and 5,000 participants — underscoring the government's continued investment in developing women leadership. — Bernama

'We will refer the case to the Deputy Public Prosecutor after the investigation paper is completed,' he told Bernama when contacted today. The case is classified under Section 504 of the Penal Code, which deals with intentional insult with an intent to provoke a breach of peace, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services. Hasbullah was reported as saying that police received a report on June 11 regarding the post, which was made from a Facebook account under the name 'Khalid Yunus'. — Bernama
