Rest house staff faces action in Pakistan for using judges crockery
The Lahore High Court had ordered a probe into the use of 'forbidden" crockery meant for judges of the superior court against four suspects — Samuel Sandhu (waiter), Faisal Hayat (coolie), Shahzad Masih (sweeper) and Muhammad Imran (counter staff).
Two of the accused were Christians.
During a probe conducted by the LHC Additional Registrar, the staffers in question were found using crockery while having lunch in the Judges Rest House," a court official said, adding that the accused have denied any wrongdoing.
The official said the probe body on Friday recommended that Christian waiter Samuel should be removed from service while the other three be issued 'censure" letters.
As the inquiry focuses on administrative discipline, this case has sparked legal and ethical debate on social media.
One netizen named Samrina Hashmi on her X account criticised the move and asked, 'Are these judges royal that none else could eat in their crockery…are these accused employees animals? 'Eating food has become a crime. Those who feast on the nation's wealth took notice of the staff's 'crime" of eating from the plates bought with the staff's own earnings," another social media user posted on X.
Another person named Ali Hasan lambasted the LHC for treating a Christian staffer differently.
'If all accused committed the same basic act of violating crockery use rules, and only one belonging to a religious minority is singled out for removal, it could be viewed as discriminatory. The inquiry must ensure procedural fairness," he demanded. PTI MZ NSA NSA NSA

JDA demolishes residential house of drug peddler built on its land in Jammu
Agency: PTI Jammu, Jul 21 (PTI) Jammu Development Authority (JDA) on Monday demolished a residential house allegedly illegally constructed by a drug peddler on the authority's land in Jammu city, officials said. The property belonged to Reena alias Roopa, wife of Bobby, a notorious drug peddler from Rajeev Nagar. The JDA team, led by Tehsildar Megha Gupta and assisted by police, carried out the demolition operation against the 'illegally" constructed residential structure at Rajeev Nagar in Tehsil Bahu, they said. The demolished property belonged to Reena, a notorious drug peddler with a criminal background, against whom multiple cases have been registered in the city, they said. She was also detained under the Public Safety Act in 2019 due to her continued involvement in the drug trade and threat to public order, they added. On July 31, 2024, police successfully obtained confirmation of property attachment orders against Reena and three other notorious drug peddlers from the Rajeev Nagar and Ragoora areas. 610 antiquities retrieved from six countries including US during 2020-24: Govt
New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) A total of 610 antiquities were retrieved from the US, the UK and four other countries over the last five years, the government informed Parliament on Monday. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat shared this information in a written reply to a question on whether the government has conducted any survey or study regarding theft of Indian artefacts in the last five years; and details of the total number of artefacts recovered, still missing and unaccounted for over the same period. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) maintains up-to-date data of theft cases in respect of protected monuments, sites and museums under its jurisdiction, he said. On retrieval of antiquities from abroad, according to the data shared by him, in 2020, three artefacts were brought back from Australia and five from the UK. In 2021, 157 antiquities were brought back from the US and one each from Canada and the UK. In 2023 and 2024, the figures stood at 105 (the US) and 297 (the US) respectively. For the US, the total number of retrieved antiquities for 2020-24 stood at 559, and for Australia, the corresponding figures stood at 34. The total number spanning the six countries — the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, Italy and Thailand — for 2020-24 stands at 610. In response to another query, Shekhawat said, a total of 655 antiquities have been retrieved from foreign countries since 1976. Dhankhar 3rd vice president to quit mid-term
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday became the third vice president to have resigned mid-term. Earlier, Vice President V V Giri, who had taken over as the acting president after the death of incumbent Zakir Hussain on May 3, 1969, had resigned from the post. Giri resigned as the vice president on July 2, 1969 to contest the presidential election as an independent candidate. He also became the first vice president not to complete his term in office. Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat resigned from the post on July 21, 2007, after being defeated in the presidential election against Congress-led UPA nominee Pratibha Patil. After Shekhawat's resignation, the vice president's post was vacant for 21 days, before Mohammad Hamid Ansari was elected to the position. Vice Presidents R Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma and K R Narayanan too had resigned from their posts, but after their election as the president.
