Summer and Frederick Adams are the owners of The Candle Shop in Tupelo, Miss.
TUPELO – During the summer, the children of Frederick and Summer Adams spent about an hour every Saturday visiting local barbershops.

The Candle Shop has expanded its assortment. It also sells body oils, burner oils, waxes, dough bowls, body butters and more.
The store is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. They'll also ship: a flat rate of $9.99 takes their scents anywhere.
For more information, visit the store's Facebook page at Adams CandleShop.
Their pitch: selling candles to the shops so they could earn some money to buy games for their PlayStation.
Mom and dad had already been selling candles as a side gig, so the kids decided to give it a try themselves.
"They were able to work it up to 17 barbershops," Frederick Adams said. "Then one day, we were walking in the mall, and my daughter said, 'I want something like that, Bath and Body Works.'"
But rather than opening a store in the mall, his daughter found a small space in the West Main Shopping Center that looked promising. They even went as far as getting the glass cut for shelving for the candles.
"I said we needed to talk about it; who were your employees going to be? At the time she was doing track with the high school and the boys were doing travel baseball," Frederick said.

The Candle Shop is located in the West Main Shopping Center in Tupelo, Miss.
As it turned out, it became a family business, and after eight years, The Candle Shop has expanded its customer base.
"It all started out part-time and a bit of a hobby, but now it's our passion and part of our family," Frederick said.
They were selling candles wholesale, then they decided to buy the rights from a company to pour the candles.

The Candle Shop has a variety of scents.
"They actually came to our house and taught us how," Frederick said. "That was about four years ago when we started pouring the candles ourselves.'
Their candle pouring facility is their garage. All told, the shop has 23 scents and is working to add more.
The candles come in 3-ounce and 11-ounce glass jars.
"It's a lot of work," Summer said. "We have to heat the wax, and that takes about an hour, then after it gets to a certain temperature, we're able to pour. Then depending on the customer's needs, the scents are what we'll pour."
During the pouring process, the wicks are set into the candles.
Once that's done, the candles are left to set and dry.
"Pouring candles is a lot harder than people think," Frederick said. "There's a lot of precise measurements. She does the measuring, and I do the pouring."

The Adamses make the candles they sell themselves.
"We're usually up until 1 in the morning or later," Summer said.
The pouring process now takes about three late nights each week. With the spring and summer festival season, The Candle Shop takes part in as many events as possible to sell their candles. They also set up monthly at the Tupelo Flea Market.
Holidays also mean ramping up production: Christmas, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are the busiest.
Among all the scents, Kudzu is the most popular. It mimics the sweet, grape-light scent of the real vine.
"And kudzu just grows on the side of the road, serving no purpose," Frederick said. "But the candle does."
The Adams family would like to expand The Candle Shop into other locations. In some aspects, they have laid the foundation for expansion: The Candle Shop uses a van to service some of the barber shops the children reached out to years ago.
"Our daughter is graduating next year with a business degree, so we'd like to look at franchising to other cities,' Frederick said.

Walmart Deals of the Day: Save $70 on Beats' Sleek On-Ear Solo 4 Headphones

Summer is just around the corner, and Walmart is celebrating the warm weather with a fresh batch of savings. You'll find thousands of offers available online, and there are some true bargains to be had if you're willing to sift through all of the deals. Fortunately, CNET has done most of the heavy lifting for you, and we've collected some of best daily offers below. For today, June 6, that includes a top-rated pair of over-ear Beats headphones that you can grab for $70 off, a single-serve Keurig brewer that whips up refreshing iced coffees on sale for less than $60 and a previous-gen Samsung smartwatch available for just $99. If you find over-ear headphones to be a little bulky, the Beats Solo 4s are an excellent alternative. They're one of our favorite pairs of on-ear headphones for 2025, with our reviewer commending them for their sound quality, battery life and voice-calling performance. They lack active noise cancellation, but do support spatial audio if you're an Apple user. Plus, they boast an impressive 50 hours of listening time per charge. They're also very lightweight at just 217 grams, and the plush ear cushions help reduce outside noise. Now that the warm summer weather is here, a refreshing iced coffee is the perfect way to start your day. And with this single-serve Keurig brewer, you can make it at home in minutes. It has a special "brew over ice setting" that starts hot to help extract flavor and then cools down so it won't melt the ice and water down your drink. It has multiple different cup size settings, and this deal also comes with a 12-ounce tumbler so you can take your coffee on the go. This 2021 Samsung smartwatch is now three generations old, but it's a great option for those on a tight budget who don't want to spend $300 or more on the latest model. It's equipped with a 40mm display and 16GB of onboard storage, and still has all the basic features you need. These include tons of fitness tracking functions like preset workout modes, sleep tracking and even a built-in ECG, as well as some convenient smart features like on-wrist notifications and support for tons of Android apps. Both the black and pink gold variants are on sale.

True Standard Distilling comes to downtown Frederick

One of the keys to True Standard Distilling's operations sits away from the shiny white quartz countertop of the new tasting room or the 500-gallon copper still that sits behind a glass wall nearby. In a corner of a back room of the distillery — which celebrated its grand opening on Frederick's North Carroll Street on May 29 — is a case of glass beakers, each labeled with a strip of blue tape. The beakers contain extracts pulled from various types of fruits and spices, which head distiller Kristian Naslund, co-owner Brian Allen, and their team use in creating the distillery's products. Each of the extracts — whether from orange, grapefruit, lime, peppercorn, ginger, cardamom, or other items — is made in-house, said Allen, who co-owns the business with his wife, Ashley. The products include silver rum, spiced rum, silver spiced rum, and dark spiced rum, as well as a vodka. 'We're a house of cane,' Allen said, with their drinks based around cane sugars. The silver spiced rum is especially good for light, refreshing summer drinks, Naslund said. 'We want to be able to appeal to anyone who walks in the door,' he said. The neighborhood near Frederick's East Street has a history of brewing and distilling, Allen said. He and Ashley looked at the building, a former antique store, several years ago when they were looking for a location, then came back to it in 2021, he said. They kept most of the exterior walls, but gutted almost everything else, took off the roof, put in new trusses, and rebuilt the front wall. It took about a year to design the new building, and about two years to construct, he said. Allen started distilling as a hobby about 15 years ago. He and Ashley have three children. Eventually, she told him, he needed to find another location for his hobby other than at their house, he said with a laugh. He said he most enjoys the art and craftsmanship of experimenting with chemistry to create different products. Naslund also started distilling as a hobby, and began working professionally in Colorado in 2008. He said he likes trying to improve on a technique developed a long time ago, as well as the people he comes in contact with. 'For me, it's the people and connections, he said. He said that when he met Allen, he showed Naslund what he had in mind, then let him go to work. About 90% of what they produce goes into old bourbon barrels to age, Allen said. The barrels are stacked along a rear wall of the distillery's back room. The rest goes into the spiced rum and other drinks. Rum is traditionally aged in barrels, and flavors are pulled out of the wood, Naslund said. Along with the tasting room in Frederick, they're also focusing on distribution to be able to sell their product outside the Frederick area, Allen said. The tasting room is about 1,500 square feet, while the building is about 9,000 square feet overall, he said. They currently have 11 employees, bur plan to eventually have 15 to 20, he said. They're looking for a good chef, but are currently coordinating with some food trucks to provide food options, he said. As the business continues to grow, both Allen and Naslund are enjoying making a living at what they love. 'Once you get into the hobby of distilling, it gets into your blood, literally and figuratively,' Allen said.
