Onam celebrations to begin on September 3
Various departments should work in tandem to organise the Onam celebrations in an attractive manner, the Chief Minister directed. The area from Kowdiar to Manacaud in Thiruvananthapuram will be declared a festival zone. Onam programmes will be organised adhering to the green protocol. Onam fairs, under the aegis of Kudumbashree, will be organised at community development societies and area development societies across the State. Besides these, fairs will be held at the district level too. Vegetables and flowers cultivated under the Kudumbashree will be harvested ahead of the Onam.

It has also been decided to make available Onam kits containing all the essential items both directly and online. Supplyco Onam markets will also be launched at the district, taluk, and constituency levels, the meeting decided. The State government also decided to explore the possibility of organising cultural events by roping in cultural institutions and programmes involving fishing vessels in the fisheries sector to attract people.
Distribution of vegetables and essential items has already been started through Consumerfed and primary cooperative societies. More primary societies are engaged in the cultivation of vegetables aimed at the Onam markets. More items would be brought to the Onam markets through Horticorp's vegetable markets and by activating the support systems of the Agriculture department, the meeting decided.

KOCHI: As the Onam season approaches, Malayalis based in major cities like Bengaluru and Chennai are navigating a complex travel landscape. This year, unlike in last, early planners are reaping the benefits of lower fares on flights and private buses, though travel experts warn this temporary relief may not last as the festival nears. The perennial struggle for long-distance train tickets, however, remains a persistent and unresolved issue. According to industry insiders, the current ticket fares for both air and road transport are notably more affordable than last year's holiday surge pricing. For travel on high-demand days like August 29, when the Onam vacation begins, luxury private bus fares hover around Rs 2,500, a significant drop from the Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,200 they commanded during the same period last year. Similarly, flight tickets are available for around Rs 3,000, thanks in part to a greater number of special services. IndiGo alone has announced 24 extra round-trip flights to metros like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai from Kochi, said a Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) spokesperson. However, travel experts are cautious about the trend's longevity. Biji Eapen, national president of the IATA Agents Association of India, warns that while a current 'growth slowness' benefits those booking early, prices on monopoly routes like Kochi-Chennai will inevitably rise. 'The ticket prices will now go up as the festive season arrives,' Biji said. The dynamic is most visible in the pricing for return journeys. While outbound bus fares on August 29 average around Rs 2,500, the average fare for the return trip on September 7 soars to roughly Rs 3,500.

Metro project remains stalled as follow-up meeting not held
T'puram: Two months after a high-level meeting chaired by CM Pinarayi Vijayan decided to form an expert committee to finalise the alignment of the proposed Thiruvananthapuram metro rail, state govt has shown little urgency in moving the project forward. The expert panel, which was supposed to study the technical and financial aspects of the project's alignment, has not even convened a follow-up meeting since the announcement, a delay that raised concerns about govt's commitment to the much-anticipated project. Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) managing director Loknath Behera told TOI that there has been no communication from state govt since the meeting. "We proposed seven alignments so far. Govt assured us that they would finalise one and inform us, but there has been no word since then," he said. The expert committee was expected to include secretaries from the revenue, finance, local self-govt and transport departments. Its mandate was to evaluate various alignment options proposed by KMRL and submit recommendations to govt to expedite the project. The key corridors under consideration are Kazhakkoottam to Pappanamcode, Kazhakkoottam to Killipalam and Palayam to Civil Station. While the proposed alignments were based on traffic density and urban connectivity, cost considerations became a significant hurdle. However, govt sources claimed that the delay was due to internal discussions regarding the alignment and cost structure. "Multiple routes are still under evaluation and no final decision has been made," an official source said. One of the major sticking points is the estimated cost of underground metro construction. While KMRL estimated the cost to be around Rs 550 crore per kilometre for underground sections, other experts argue that new technologies can reduce the cost to Rs 250 crore per kilometre. People in Thiruvananthapuram are waiting eagerly for the metro, but there is complete inaction," he said. With the absence of coordination between state govt and KMRL, concerns are growing that the project, initially envisioned to ease the city's mounting traffic woes and boost urban mobility, will be indefinitely delayed. Meanwhile, when contacted, chief secretary A Jayathilak was unavailable for a comment despite repeated attempts. Urban planners and civic groups urged govt to act swiftly, warning that any further delay will push up costs and affect public confidence in state's infrastructure planning. Once the alignment is finalised, it will be handed to KMRL to revise the detailed project report (DPR) originally prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The DPR's executive summary was submitted to state govt in Feb 2024. Finance department approved the project earlier this year. Onam Khadi fair opens in Alappuzha
Promotion of khadi will ensure a steady income for ordinary people, Agriculture Minister P. Prasad has said. He was speaking after inaugurating the district-level launch of Onam Khadi Fair organised by the Alappuzha District Khadi and Village Industries Office here on Friday (August 8, 2025). The Minister also inaugurated the silver jubilee celebrations of a ready-made garments unit under the Alappuzha Khadi Project. 'Khadi has a rich tradition and heritage. It emerged as a product of resistance against injustice and as a source of energy for the freedom struggle. When someone buys a khadi product, its benefits reach farmers, workers, and ordinary people. This, in turn, will contribute to the progress of the nation,' Mr. Prasad said. Promoting the message 'I too want Khadi', a wide collection of diverse cotton, silk, and linen khadi garments, along with attractive gift schemes, has been arranged in khadi sales outlets as part of the Onam celebrations to make khadi more popular. A fair of Milleni brand khadi shirts is also being organised in connection with the fair. On the occasion, Alappuzha municipal chairperson K.K. Jayamma conducted the first sale and launched the gift coupon. Khadi Board member K.
