Pharma exports robust at $5bn in April, May: Pharmexcil
This marks a strong 7.38% expansion compared with the same period last year, highlighting the industry's continued upward trajectory and its key role globally.
Pharmexcil, a body under the ministry of commerce, attributed the momentum to strategic initiatives focused on sustainable manufacturing, expanded global market presence, and digital innovation aimed at streamlining regulatory processes.
It said these efforts are fundamental to India's ambitious goal of achieving a trillion-dollar trade target for its pharma industry.
"India's pharmaceutical exports continue to demonstrate a steady year-over-year growth, with drug formulations and biologicals continuing to dominate the export category," stated Namit Joshi, chairman of Pharmexcil.
"We attribute this growth to rising global demand, streamlined regulatory approvals, technological innovations, strategic partnerships, and economic stability,' Joshi said.
Formulations and biologicals remain the backbone of India's pharma exports, accounting for 75.74% of the total. Bulk drugs and drug intermediates also saw healthy growth, expanding by 4.40% in May 2025-26.
Notably, there was a significant 13.64% increase in vaccine exports, reaching $190.13 million, underscoring India's contribution to global health. Other key segments were surgical items (up 8.58%) and Ayush & herbals products (up 7.36%).
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) region, Europe, Africa, and Latin America make up 76% of India's pharmaceutical export destinations.
The US remains the top destination, with exports valued at $1.7 billion in May, representing 34.5% of total pharma exports and a 1.5% expansion. While Europe and Africa saw moderate growth, the Asean region emerged as a newly contracted area, showing promising diversification, the statement said.
Joshi said the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) discussions showed it will significantly enhance supply chains, improve access to affordable medicines, and attract foreign direct investment, particularly in contract development and manufacturing (CDMO) and joint research.

New Delhi: The India-US trade negotiations are at an advanced stage and a consensus on an interim deal is within reach, a key official told NDTV on Tuesday, adding that Washington's demands on agricultural products are proving to be a hurdle. Indo-American Chamber of Commerce Executive Council Member Sunil Jain spoke to the channel on Tuesday, a day after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was reported as having said that agriculture and dairy are "big red lines" for India in the trade talks. "The deal has progressed a lot and the chief negotiators of India are extending their stay in the US and trying to complete the deal. I think the two areas where the deal is getting stuck are related to agricultural products. Agriculture is the lifeline of the Indian GDP and Indian people. It is very difficult for us to import agricultural products. There are many difficulties and sensitivities involved," Mr Jain said in Hindi. "The second thing is that the products the US sells to us are genetically modified products, which are banned in India. Till date, no law has been enacted in India to allow these products. So, it is very difficult for us to import maize, cotton, soya, almonds, apples, etc. The US is telling us to make a deal on these products," he added. The negotiations between India and the US entered the sixth day in Washington on Tuesday. The Indian team, headed by Rajesh Agrawal, special secretary in the Department of Commerce, was initially scheduled to stay for two days. The extension is important because US President Donald Trump's 26% reciprocal tariffs had been suspended for 90 days till July 9. The baseline tariffs of 10%, though, are still in place. "I think both countries can keep this obstacle aside and move forward with other products. For the US, exports of auto components, aluminium and steel from India are a problem. I think we should make a deal and keep some products out of it... We can debate and come to an agreement on these products after three to four months," he said. If this can be worked out, the executive council member said, a large part of India's exports to the US will be saved from the reciprocal tariffs, but the base tariff of 10% is likely to remain. "The zero tariff trade will be settled only after September-October. But, even if we work with 10% as the base tariff, it is fine for the country... If there is any bilateral trade agreement, it will have to involve give and take. So, we will move forward and America will move forward. Both are the largest democracies in the world and they will have to move together," Mr Jain said.

Rajnath Singh, Pete Hegseth Speak On Deepening Defence Industry Cooperation
New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday spoke to US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and appreciated the "unwavering support" the US extended to India in its fight against terrorism. In their phone conversation, Singh and Hegseth discussed a wide range of issues -- from long-term cooperation in the defence sector, including training and military exchanges, to expanding industry collaborations. "Excellent discussion to review the ongoing and new initiatives to further deepen India-US defence partnership and strengthen cooperation in capacity building," Singh said in a social media post. "Conveyed my deep appreciation for the unwavering support extended by the US to India in its fight against terrorism. Looking forward to meet him at an early date," he said. The defence ministry said Singh and Hegseth agreed to further build upon the momentum of the "critical and mutually beneficial" partnership across all its pillars. "The two leaders discussed a wide canvas of issues ranging from long-term cooperation in the defence sector, including training and military exchanges, to expanding the industry collaboration," it said in a statement. "They agreed to further build upon the momentum of this critical and mutually beneficial partnership across all its pillars such as interoperability, integration of defence industrial supply chains, logistics sharing, increased joint military exercises and cooperation with other like-minded partners," the ministry said. It said the defence minister appreciated the unwavering support extended by the US to India for its fight against terrorism. "He complimented the US Secretary of Defence for his dynamic leadership which has propelled defence cooperation between the US and India to new levels," the ministry said. Hegseth invited Singh to the US for an in-person meeting to take the bilateral defence partnership forward, the ministry added. It was the third telephone conversation between Singh and Hegseth since January this year.
