3 Animals You Didn't Know Went To Space — One Might Still Be Out There, Waiting To Wake Up

You've seen the headlines. The James Webb Space Telescope detected methane and carbon dioxide on a distant exoplanet, stirring cautious excitement about the possibility of life beyond Earth. It's the strongest signal yet. But for now, it remains just a theory.
What's not theory is this: Life from Earth has already left the planet. And not just humans and dogs, either. Over the decades, we've launched a surprising cast of living organisms into space, from stray cats to microscopic indestructible micro-animals.
Their time out there may have been brief, but they crossed a boundary few lifeforms never will. Some may never return. Here are three you probably didn't expect.
There's a general misconception that Laika, the Soviet space dog, was the first animal in space. But the truth is quieter and smaller. On February 20, 1947, the United States launched a group of fruit flies aboard a captured German V-2 rocket. This swarm went down in history as the first living organisms from Earth to reach space, beating both dogs and humans by years.
The flies were recovered alive after a successful parachute descent, marking the silent start of life's journey off-planet. For context, Laika flew aboard Sputnik 2 in 1957, a full decade later. And Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space, followed in 1961.
Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) have long been model organisms in science — small, easy to breed and genetically well-understood, even in the 1940s. Their short life cycles make them ideal for studying generational effects, and they require minimal life support systems, making them perfect candidates for early, high-risk flights.

More importantly, fruit flies are sensitive to radiation and share some fundamental biological responses with us, making them valuable analogs for studying the genetic effects of cosmic exposure. Researchers were especially interested in how cosmic rays, a largely untested threat at the time, would affect living tissue.
Under the microscope, they look almost like animated plush toys — slow-moving, water-bloated and oddly adorable. But tardigrades, also known as water bears or moss piglets, are among the toughest survivors evolution has ever carved out. And in 2007, they became the first animals known to survive direct exposure to the vacuum and radiation of space.
Less than a millimeter long, these water-dwelling, eight-legged micro-animals can endure boiling ... More heat, freezing cold, crushing pressure and radiation.
Sent into low Earth orbit aboard the European Space Agency's FOTON-M3 mission, dehydrated tardigrades endured ten days in outer space. When rehydrated back on Earth, most of the specimens protected from UV radiation came back to life. Some even went on to reproduce.
Their resilience comes from cryptobiosis, a kind of biological stasis in which they shut down nearly all activity and dry into a glass-like shell. In this 'tun state,' they can survive extreme cold, searing heat and even radiation.
And Earth's biological signature may still be out there. Thousands of tardigrades were aboard the Beresheet lander that crashed on the Moon in 2019. While the odds of survival are slim, and reactivation impossible without water, some may be lying dormant on the lunar surface, frozen in time.
On October 18, 1963, France launched a black-and-white stray cat, later named Félicette, into suborbital space aboard a Véronique AGI 47 sounding rocket. She was one of 14 female cats trained for spaceflight by the French Centre d'Enseignement et de Recherches de Médecine Aéronautique (CERMA).
The cats underwent rigorous training, including exposure to intense G-forces and confinement, to prepare for the mission. Félicette's short flight reached an altitude of 157 kilometers, 57 past the Kármán line, during which she experienced about five minutes of weightlessness. Electrodes implanted in her skull transmitted neurological data back to Earth, providing insights into the effects of space travel on living organisms.
Remarkably, she survived the flight and was safely recovered. Soon after, she was euthanized so scientists could learn more from her autopsy. Despite her contributions, Félicette's story remained largely unknown for decades. While other animal astronauts like Laika became celebrated figures, Félicette faded into obscurity. It wasn't until 2019 that she received formal recognition with a bronze statue honoring her contributions to space exploration.

Using a series of dots streaming across a black screen that mimicked particles in murky water, researchers observed whether harbor seals used optic flow, or the movement of objects across one's field of vision, to determine the direction in which they are moving, according to a May 29 study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. Harbor seals are especially adept at navigating open water, which can be 'a strangely claustrophobic experience' for humans as our view drops to just a few centimeters, according to an article published in the Journal of Experimental Biology about the study. Seals are known to use their highly sensitive and dexterous whiskers to navigate and hunt, but the role of visual perception is less studied. The team designed three computer simulations. The first simulated a seal moving through the open sea with dots coming at them; the second simulated the sea floor passing beneath the seal; and the last simulated the sea surface above the seal's head, according to the article. Three humans participated in the simulation for skill comparison, according to the study. The seals' heading accuracy was 'comparable, but slightly inferior to the heading accuracy of humans and Rhesus macaques (a species of monkey),' according to the study. 'The (seals) were perfectly capable of determining which direction they were traveling in based simply on the dots streaming in their view; exactly as the cloudy water, seabed or water surface would appear to move when they are swimming,' the article said. ___ © 2025 The Charlotte Observer. Marc Garneau left lasting legacy on Earth and in space, former colleagues say

MONTREAL - Canadian scientists working on asteroid missions, exploring the universe through the James Webb Space Telescope or helping to put rovers on Mars say they can in some way thank Marc Garneau, who left an enduring legacy both as an astronaut and head of the country's space agency. While best-known in later years as a federal cabinet minister, Garneau, who died this week at 76, was also a Navy officer, a systems engineer, and an astronaut with a lifelong passion for science, according to his friends and colleagues. In 1984, he made history as the first Canadian in space when he served as a payload specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. He returned to space twice more, in 1996 and 2000, before serving as the president of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001 to 2005. 'All his life was devoted to public service,' said Gilles Leclerc, an ex-CSA official who worked with him. 'And he was really a role model to all the Canadian astronauts who came after him.' As CSA president, Garneau laid the building blocks for the space exploration program that would bring together other initiatives previously developed separately, Leclerc said. He was also 'ahead of his time' when it came to being conscious of the environment and understanding the importance of applying space technology for practical uses such as satellite communications. 'During his tenure, he really wanted us to focus more on science: astronomy, planetary science, lunar exploration,' Leclerc said in a phone interview. 'So all these things that now we see, all these missions that Canada participated in, like a mission to the asteroids, two missions to Mars, the James Webb Space had a real strong influence in shaping the future of the space program for a long time.' On Friday, CSA President Lisa Campbell paid tribute to Garneau, who she called a 'cherished member of the space agency family.' 'We remain deeply grateful for his extraordinary public service and enduring contributions to Canada and the world, from making history as the first Canadian in space to guiding the Canadian Space Agency as its president,' she said at an event at the agency's Montreal-area headquarters. 'his integrity, his generosity of spirit touches everyone who had the privilege of working with him.' Flags at government buildings in Montreal have been lowered to half-mast in tribute. Garneau would carry his love of science — as well as his significant technical knowledge — into his next role as a politician, according to his former chief of staff and close personal friend. Marc Roy said Garneau decided to run for office out of a desire to give back after his successful space career. Garneau often spoke about how seeing the Earth from above 'changed his perspective on many things,' including conflicts and environmental protections, Roy said. 'So many things that unfortunately divide us as humans that become so irrelevant when you look at our world from abroad,' Roy said in a phone interview. 'And that desire to want to contribute at an even higher level, at a different, at a policy level, at a governance level is what inspired him to run for federal politics.' Garneau was elected as MP in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount in 2008 after failing to win another Montreal-area seat in 2006. Roy said Garneau's scientific background shone through most clearly as Transport minister, when he was able to instantly grasp technical briefings on ships, planes and trains. Above all, his history as a naval officer and astronaut gave him a laser focus on safety, Roy said, in a role that would see Garneau introduce measures including the safer skies initiative, and the oceans protection plan to monitor ship traffic, oil spills and wildlife. Roy said Garneau often spoke about the weight of the portfolio, 'wanting to ensure that he did it to the best of his ability, that he truly understood every decision that he was taking and every decision that was possible for him to make in order to ensure the safety of the traveling public and the safety overall of our trade and transportation corridors.' Roy said Garneau brought a scientist's analytic, 'Spock-like' demeanor to his roles. But he said some of the issues Garneau championed most passionately were social causes, including serving as a joint chair of the special joint committee on medical assistance in dying. And, despite his considerable intelligence, Roy said Garneau remained humble. 'He had a very rare quality in a politician, from his very debut until the very last day before he retired as member of Parliament, which was: he listened more than he talked,' Roy said. He said his friend was diagnosed only months ago with two cancers: leukemia and lymphoma, and died after a battle that was 'brave but short.' Roy said his friend's time since retirement was spent enjoying time with his wife, Pam, and his children, and completing work on his autobiography, 'A Most Extraordinary Ride: Space, Politics and the Pursuit of a Canadian Dream.' Roy said the book gave Garneau closure. 'He wanted to tell the story that, 'I'm just like everybody else and I failed and I've screwed up and I pulled up my socks and I learned from my mistakes and I moved on,'' Roy said. One success story where a wounded soldier was evacuated with a ground drone was reported by the 13th Khartiia Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine. The brigade successfully evacuated a wounded man using the Tarhan ("Cockroach") ground robotic system. The drone was able to deliver the wounded man to the evacuation team along a 12-km-long route. "The soldier in need of medical assistance was loaded onto the ground robotic system and successfully delivered to the evacuation team, from where he was taken to doctors," the team noted. This is further proof that the use of ground robotic systems is becoming increasingly common in the evacuation of wounded soldiers.
