Las Vegas ‘Filipino Town' boosts cultural development
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – It's been less than two month since Clark County officially proclaimed the area along Maryland Parkway between Desert Inn and Flamingo roads, 'Filipino Town.'
With the official title now set, many Las Vegas residents across the valley have taken an interest and want a piece of the cultural district.
Boulevard Mall General Manager and President Timo Kuusela said he is excited about the new developments on the horizon for the newly recognized cultural hub, 'Filipino Town.'
'We're seeing a lot of action heat up now,' Kuusela told 8 News Now.
Anchor stores, such as a supermarket and a well-known Filipino restaurant, could build foot traffic- something the area desperately needs. Other ethnic businesses are in the pipeline Kuusela said.
'Currently, we're in discussions with several companies and we hope to see them opening up here in the next six months or so,' he added.
Cultural activist, Rozita Lee spearheaded the initiative to get the area along Maryland Parkway between Desert Inn and Flamingo roads designated as 'Filipino Town.' Lee said that seeing her dreams become a reality is beyond rewarding.
'I was the one that went to see Commissioner Tick Segerblom, and I asked him what the possibility was of having a designated area for Filipinos because there are 250,000 of us in Las Vegas now and we are growing,' Lee said.
Part of her master plan includes opening a museum, showcasing Filipino artifacts, and promoting Filipino artists.
'The museum is an entity that we feel will draw people and educate people about our culture. Timo of Boulevard Mall was kind enough to open a space for us,' Lee said.
Currently, plans are still in the works with no construction date set, but Lee told 8 News Now that they are looking at naming it, 'The Museum for Filipino Town Las Vegas.'
Down the way, near where the Dillard's used to be, Fashion Designer, David Tupaz, was thrilled to see this cultural corridor come to fruition.
'It was a blessing when 'Filipino Town' was established in April, and now the Boulevard Mall awarded an area where we could build a Filipino museum,' Tupaz said.
He also said he plans to open a retail shop inside the mall just in time for holiday shoppers.
'I have a brand, and I was thinking of opening a showroom in the mall. I might as well set a presence where my people are, right?' Tupaz added.
Boulevard Mall was the first mall in Nevada, opening in 1968. 57 years later, it's getting a full makeover to attract new business in an ever-changing retail landscape.
You can expect to see signs designating 'Filipino Town' sometime this year.

Las Vegas couple killed after apparent online streamer clash
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Sunday's murder of a husband and wife stems from an online beef between two YouTube streamers arguing over, among other things, copyright infringement, the 8 News Now Investigators' review of hours worth of archived video reveals. Finny Da Legend, one of two of the shooting victims, and fellow streamer Sin City Manny, had argued for several months, the video appears to show. The two trolled each other, disagreed, and had lengthy conversations over the course of hours on a myriad of streams and sometimes different social media handles. Sin City Manny, whose real name is Manuel Ruiz, 41, will appear in Las Vegas Justice Court Tuesday morning. He faces two charges of open murder. By Monday morning, Ruiz's streams seem to have been scrubbed from the Internet. But Finny Da Legend's stream included some of Ruiz's stream, where Finny and a cast of online guests criticize his prowess of Las Vegas. 'He's the least informed Vegas person out there,' one of Finny's co-streamers said in an online broadcast that lasted over five hours. Someone with the screen name Kevin, another streamer on Finny's channel, in the same post, directly addressed the feud over copyright. That portion of the stream, from just five days ago. 'If anyone should be striked down, it should be Manny,' Kevin said. 'That's who needs the copyright strikes. That's who needs the axe.' It is unclear what exactly the copyright issue entails. That comment appears sometime after the opening sequence of Finny's stream, which included a copyright disclaimer and an obviously fake portrayal of President Donald Trump saying, 'I want to say '[Expletive] Sin City Family and [Expletive] Manny.' Sin City Family, apparently, include other online streamers who have banded together. Finny Da Legend's streams remain online, with approximately 4,000 subscribers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Advertisement Thousands of fans, media members, and boxing luminaries gathered at the Hall's historic grounds and the Turning Stone Resort Casino to welcome the Class of 2025; an emotional and star-studded tribute to the athletes and contributors who shaped boxing's legacy. Among those celebrated were Manny Pacquiao, Vinny Paz, Michael Nunn, Mary Jo Sanders, Yessica Chavez, and Anne Sophie Mathis. Others inducted included Referees, Broadcasters, and Journalists, alongside trailblazers and pioneers who shaped the evolution of boxing. Those inducted were chosen by the membership of the Boxing Writers Association of America and a panel of international boxing historians. Pacquiao was the headline name in the class of 2025 that was enshrined during the ceremony. His speech was nothing but humble and faith-filled. 'Thank you for the awards. I came from nothing, just a small boy; no shoes, no food, no chance, just a dream in my heart. I know pain, but I also know what God can do if you keep the Faith and never give up. Every fight, every victory, was a step further from poverty. It was not just for me but for my family, for the Filipino people," said Pacquiao on YouTube. Vinny Paz, the three-division champion who overcame a broken neck sustained in a car crash to resume his career, and Michael Nunn, a champion at middleweight and super middleweight, were the other top men's fighters in the class. The women's modern category spotlighted Yessica Chavez, Anne Sophie Mathis, and Mary Jo Sanders, each a fearless world champion.
