New name Rose West calls herself as serial killer now 'can barely walk'
Serial killer Rose West's new alias hasn't erased her infamy behind bars - with the 71-year-old reportedly shunned by her fellow inmates and increasingly isolated, barely leaving her wing
Serial killer Rose West has taken up a new name behind bars, but the alias hasn't erased her dark past among inmates at the female-only prison - where she is reportedly frail, barely able to walk and increasingly isolated.
The 71-year-old has spent the last six years being shunned by fellow inmates at HMP New Hall, a women-only prison near Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Convicted in 1995 of murdering twelve women and girls alongside her husband Fred, West changed her name to Jennifer Jones by deed poll in 2020 in an apparent attempt to escape her past. But fellow inmates haven't forgotten - and continue to avoid her.
Sources say she rarely leaves her wing, eats alone in her cell most mornings - usually tomato soup - and spends her days knitting and watching nature documentaries.
'She's in a disabled room now because she can barely walk,' a source told the Sun. 'She never really leaves the wing she's held on and is escorted all the time by prison officers if she goes anywhere. Sometimes she sits in the communal areas on her own.
'No one talks to her because everyone knows who she is and what she did, even if she has changed her name. When I was there, she tried to make friends with the other women and gave them gifts, like vapes, but she was rejected. She likes to watch nature documentaries on the TV in her cell, especially ones about birds.'
Despite claiming innocence, West is said to have resigned herself to dying in prison. Her husband Fred West took his own life in 1995 while on remand, escaping trial for the couple's horrific crimes during the 1970s and 1980s, several of which took place at their Gloucester home. West's notoriety has resurfaced following the release of Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story on Netflix.
Now nearly 30 years into her sentence, she remains under threat from other inmates and has been moved multiple times over the years for her safety. While her life inside is reportedly comfortable, insiders say she lashes out at staff when things don't go her way - and still receives disturbing letters from so-called 'fans.'
A source said: 'She can be quite abusive to officers if she doesn't get what she wants and she's very set in her ways. If she asks for something and it doesn't happen within five minutes, she'll get the hump. No one wants to talk to her or be close to her. She sits in the social areas around everyone else just to annoy the other women, knowing they don't want to be around her.
'Often she's just in her cell on her own and the other prisoners can hear her talking to the TV if they walk past. Her hair is grey now and she's put on some weight but she still looks the same and she still wears her glasses. She never gets any visitors but still gets loads of post and cards from sick admirers on the outside, which has to go through security checks before it gets to her.'
West was caged for life in 1995 after police discovered a series of mutilated bodies buried in the couple's garden, beneath a patio and even in a sex dungeon cellar. Among the victims was West's eight-year-old stepdaughter Charmaine and the couple's 16-year-old daughter Heather, who had been subjected to horrific sexual abuse by Fred. He forced her to watch porn with him and even tried to impregnate her.
West is allowed to continue living a comfortable life behind bars, despite refusing to help police find the remains of 20 other rumoured victims of her and her husband.

Shocking moment tourist jumps into Terracotta Army clay warriors and damages statues before being overpowered by security guards
In a shocking act of recklessness, a tourist has sparked outrage in China after jumping into a section of the world-famous Terracotta Army, damaging two of the ancient clay statues in the process. The 30-year-old man, identified only by his surname Sun, launched himself over guardrails and a protective netting at the museum housing the clay warriors in the city of Xi'an on Friday. But the man did not stop there. Once inside the protected enclosure, he reportedly began pushing and pulling the priceless statues, resulting in visible damage to two of the figures. Museum security quickly intervened and subdued the intruder. Authorities say Sun suffers from a mental illness and confirmed that an investigation is currently underway following the incident. The pit he leapt into is an eye-watering 18ft deep - raising serious concerns about how he managed to breach safety measures. The Terracotta Army is a breathtaking collection of more than 8,000 life-sized soldiers created 2,000 years ago to guard the tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. It is regarded as one of the country's greatest archaeological treasures. The Terracotta Army site has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1987 and draws millions of visitors each year. Despite the shocking incident, a museum staff member revealed that the exhibit remains open to the public as normal, with officials working swiftly to assess and repair the damage. It comes after Vietnamese police last month detained a man over damage to an ancient throne which is considered one of the nation's most precious artefacts. The man, named locally as Ho Van Phuong Tam, 42, broke into a history exhibit and damaged the antique throne, conservation officials said on May 25. The ornate red-and-gold Nguyen dynasty throne was the royal seat of the last feudal family to rule Vietnam between 1802 and 1945 and has been preserved for posterity in Hue city's Thai Hoa Palace. Tam 'snuck into the Nguyen dynasty display area, screamed and then broke the front left armrest', a statement from the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre (HMCC) said. In footage circulating on social media and Vietnam news sites purporting to show the incident, the man can be seen sitting cross-legged on the two-century-old throne that is adorned with dragon motifs. Local reports claimed the man had purchased an entry ticket before approaching the roped-off area. He then climbed on to the throne while 'exhibiting signs of severe intoxication,' as per Vietnam News. Tam was quickly arrested but showed 'signs of psychosis, screaming, talking nonsense and could not answer the investigator's questions', the HMCC said. And also last month, a vandal sparked outrage after being filmed spray a penis onto a wall at an ancient Peruvian UNESCO site. In footage, the man was seen spraying the crude graffiti on one of the original walls of Chan Chan, a pre-Columbian city 300 miles north of Lima that is flooded with thousands of visitors each month. He wore a backpack and drew a giant black penis on the stone which is more than 600 years old and a World Heritage Site. Peru's ministry of culture said the culprit showed 'a grave disrespect toward our history and cultural heritage, as well as a violation of the regulations that protect archaeological heritage sites.

Rose West welcomes granddaughter after paedophile son has baby with former model
Serial killer Rose West has become a grandmother again after her paedophile son Stephen, 51, and his fiancée Emma Bradley, 39, welcomed a baby girl named Eden. Rose West has welcomed another grandchild into the world after her son fathered a child with an ex-glamour model. Stephen West and his betrothed Emma Bradley are now parents to little Eden, yet 71 year old Rose, behind bars serving a whole life term, will never meet her newest grandchild due to Stephen severing all contact with his notorious mother. Despite the trepidation of Emma's kin over their romance, given Stephen's past conviction in 2004 for underage sex offences, the couple forged ahead. The 51 year old who once lived in the gruesome family home confessed: "There's a bit of my dad in me." His infamous father, Fred West, committed a series of murders with Rose between 1967 and 1987 in Gloucestershire. In 1995, Fred was discovered deceased in his cell. Nearly three decades into her incarceration, Rose has reportedly ceased efforts to contest her judgment since 2001 and seems to accept her fate in prison. Now, insiders relay to The Sun that Stephen and Emma plan to exchange vows come August at Newport's Celtic Manor hotel, reports the Mirror. Despite this happy occasion, it is understood from a source that Emma's family remains unsupportive of the match, discomforted by Stephen and citing "a rift" created in the family. Emma, a trained nurse stationed at Gloucester Royal Hospital, brings two daughters from a former relationship into the fold. Following unsettling reports indicating that Rose may be struggling with her health and has been transferred to a disabled room in prison "because she can barely walk," Emma disclosed that she and her partner were oblivious as they maintain no contact. Acknowledging that they've watched the new Netflix documentary Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story, Emma revealed that her fiancé Stephen "doesn't want to say anything because his main priority is the little ones." She elaborated: "He is adamant, at this time of his life he's got a young family to protect." Stephen, himself a grandfather, has eight children from two previous marriages. As for Rose's experiences behind bars, an insider divulged to The Sun: "She never really leaves the wing she's held on and is escorted all the time by prison officers if she goes anywhere. Sometimes she sits in the communal areas on her own. "No one talks to her because everyone knows who she is and what she did, even if she has changed her name. When I was there, she tried to make friends with the other women and gave them gifts, like vapes, but she was rejected. She likes to watch nature documentaries on the TV in her cell, especially ones about birds." In an effort to distance herself from her heinous acts, it's purported that West shelled out £36 to officially adopt the name Jennifer Jones. Reports suggest she went through the deed poll process last December, expressing to acquaintances that it represents a step towards moving forward. Nonetheless, her true identity remains common knowledge at the all-female HMP New Hall near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. Some prisoners reject her overtures of companionship, leading her to consume tomato soup solitarily in her cell for breakfast, followed by prolonged periods of knitting and conversing with the television due to her limited mobility. West is currently detained in New Hall's designated section called Rivendell House, where she occupies one of the 30 en-suite cells available to inmates, each furnished with a laptop for ordering food. Inspection reports suggest that the shared spaces in this unit are "more inviting" compared to other areas within the prison.
