Frankie Dettori set to return to Royal Ascot for first time since bankruptcy declaration
Frankie Dettori won 81 times at the Royal meeting and topped the jockey standings at the five-day extravaganza on seven occasions, but he's not back in the saddle at Ascot this week

Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori is set to return to Royal Ascot this week, albeit not in the saddle.
The 54-year-old, who has ridden 81 winners at the five-day racing event and topped the leaderboard for most winners seven times, quit Britain after 35 years at the end of 2023. Despite announcing his retirement, he made a U-turn and resumed his career in the US.
This month, he celebrated his biggest win since relocating, riding Raging Torrent to victory in the £1million Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga. Raging Torrent's success has contributed to Dettori's 21 wins in the US in 2025, earning him £2.3m, following a difficult start to the year when he declared bankruptcy in Britain, reports the Mirror.
A petition on his behalf was filed in March after his tax arrangements were challenged by HMRC. "I am saddened and embarrassed by this outcome and would advise others to take a stronger rein over their financial matters," he said in a statement at the time.
"Bankruptcy is a major decision and its consequences will affect me for many years. I am relieved to be drawing a line on this long-term matter, which enables me to reset and focus on my international riding career."
Dettori attended Royal Ascot as a spectator last year and plans to do the same this year, despite feeling the pull to ride competitively again before he retires. "I won't lie to you, I do have the little devil on my shoulder that says to me, 'One more time,' but I just didn't think that this year or last year would have been appropriate," confessed Dettori in a blog for betting site Stake.

"But I will be coming over to Ascot, with a little bit of anxiety feeling that I could have rode. I did get some offers but I am not going to lie, I do miss it. I had over 80 winners, it has been a huge part of my life. It is quite hard but after a few champagnes, I get over it. I really do miss it though.

"I will be there this year. There is a bit of a period from now until Saratoga, I will fly over this weekend, it is my daughter's birthday and I will try and see as many kids as I can in my tribe of five, and show my face at Royal Ascot and see some old friends before I come back to Saratoga and start again. I use this opportunity to enjoy the racing and then see the family."
Dettori offered his tips for the Group 1 races at Ascot this week, with the action getting underway on Tuesday and running through to Saturday.
Queen Anne Stakes: "It is an amazing race. I really like Rosallion, he ran a super race last time out and I would also put in the American horse, Carl Spackler. I was second to him at Keeneland and he absolutely destroyed me. He is a horse that is improving, not a typical American horse as he is easy to handle, the occasion will not get to him. He could be a bit of a price."
King Charles III Stakes: "You could name 10 contenders in this race, but I've gone with last year's winner - Asfoora. In my opinion, he stands head and shoulders above the rest. He's had a prep run and I wouldn't be surprised if he's been specifically trained for this race. It's the toughest race of the week to predict."

St James's Palace Stakes: "This is likely the best race of the week. We might see three Guineas winners competing, but I'd love to see my old boss, John Gosden, win it with Field Of Gold. I was incredibly impressed last time, he's still improving, and I reckon he'll be one of the NAPs for the week. I'd be surprised if he gets beaten."
Prince of Wales's Stakes: "There are a few you could consider, but I'm going to stick with the obvious choice, Los Angeles. He has stamina, a big heart, and Ryan Moore will keep him prominent. Any horse that passes him will win, but possibly none will, because he'll put them to the test. He's a fighter too, so I'll back him."
Ascot Gold Cup: "Aidan O'Brien's runner, Kyprios, is out, leaving a big gap. They're now relying on Illinois, but I'm going to stick with a horse that loves Ascot. He has stamina, he's not Stradivarius, but Trawlerman is as reliable as they come. John has trained him specifically for this race this year, so I know Trawlerman is a solid bet."
Commonwealth Cup: "This is my NAP in the Group 1s of the week - Shadow Of Light. He demonstrated great speed in the Guineas, most of the good horses have gone to the St James's Palace, I reckon this leaves the door open for him to show his stuff. He could be my banker of the week, Field Of Gold would have been a bit too obvious."

Coronation Stakes: "This was my last Royal Ascot winner, it took me years to get it, in this race. Zarigana is my pick. She was a lucky winner of the French Guineas but she is a top class filly. Mikael Barzalona gave her too much to do and got beat but won it in the Stewards Room, but he won't make that mistake again."
Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes: "I fancy Inisherin, Kevin Ryan's horse. I have chosen him, it is a wide open race, you also have to consider the Japanese horse they are raving about, you have to."
Longshot of the week: "I have selected Billy Loughnane, the up and coming young jockey, he is riding the crest of a wave right now so I am going with the one he rides, Oliver Show in the Royal Hunt Cup." Banker of the week (non-Group 1): "I couldn't leave him out - Willie Mullins. His runner in the Queen Alexandra Stakes - Sober."

Royal Ascot drinks prices as punter's Peroni and Champagne costs revealed
Royal Ascot begins on Tuesday with punters needing to cough up hefty sums for a day on the drink with beer, cider, wine and champagne prices all catching the eye Those heading to Royal Ascot best prepare themselves for an expensive day with a bottle of Moet champagne costing up to £250 for a bottle. Even those wishing to knock back Guinness or Peroni for the day will be spending nearly £8 for a pint. Arguably the sport's most popular meeting gets underway on Tuesday at the world famous Berkshire venue. Prices have continued to rise in recent years with tickets costing just shy of £100 in the grandstand - and those price hikes are reflected when you head to the bar. A Peroni will set a punter back £7.80 - the same for a Guinness. A Meantime pale ale is only marginally cheaper at £7.50. Even those wishing to be sensible and have a day on the non-alcoholic beers will still have to fork out £5.50 for a 0% Peroni. A bottle of Cornish Orchards comes in at £7.80. Anybody eyeing up the wine or the champagne best prepare themselves. A bottle of the very popular rose wine Whispering Angel will be costing you a mammoth £75 for a bottle. Bottles of red and white wine are anything between £30 - £45. A large class comes in at £11 - but not for a Whispering Angel. That is only available by the bottle. Those in need of some fizz could spend up to £560. That will land you a bottle of Dom Perignon Blanc. Moet comes in at between £210 - £250 but those prices are for a 1500ml bottle - anything that's 750ml comes it generally at just under half the price. Those at Royal Ascot will be able to see some stunning race however with three Group 1s kicking off the meeting on Tuesday. It all begins with the Queen Anne Stakes at 2.30pm where Rosallion goes off as the favourite. The feature race is a 4.20pm and features a tantalising prospect of a 2,000 Guineas repeat. Ruling Court won on that May afternoon at Newmarket, edging out Fields of Gold, but goes into this afternoon's St James' Palace Stakes as the second favourite. Fields of Gold has since won the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Thady Gosden, who trains the favourite with dad John, said: "He's been in good order at home since his win in the Irish Two Thousand Guineas and the likely fast ground will play to his strengths. "It's a small but elite field and he goes there in good shape. His draw in stall five is a positive as it will give Colin Keane options rather than being drawn close to the rail, which can make things tricky." Henri Matisse represents the icon that is Aidan O'Brien, the race's most successful trainer. Fresh off the back of a French Guineas success at Longchamp, this horse is a third contender in the St James' Palace Stakes with Ryan Moore on board.

Royal Ascot day 1: Tips and racecards for today's racing
The opening day of Royal Ascot is special for many reasons but chief among them is the bounty of top-class racing there is to enjoy. The only one across the five days to feature three Group One races, today's action will be truly exhilarating. The three Group Ones – the Queen Anne Stakes (2.30), the King Charles III Stakes (3.40) and the St James's Palace Stakes (4.20) – are among the most competitive races of the entire week and Telegraph Sport is here to help you find the winner. There will be extra attention on the Ascot Stakes (5.00) with Reaching High set to go off favourite in the colours of the King and Queen. Below, our experts give their selections for every race on the card as well their best bet (Nap) on Tuesday. Check back here once racing kicks-off for the results. Royal Ascot Tuesday tips 2.30pm: Queen Anne Stakes (Group One) Charlie Brooks – Dancing Gemini does not have to find much improvement to reverse Lockinge Stakes form with Lead Artist. Marcus Armytage – Lead Artist. Nothing wrong with his Lockinge win, going away at the finish, and should relish Ascot's stiff mile. Marlborough – Notable Speech should be suited by the stiff Ascot mile and fitness is sure to have improved for his reappearance fourth at Newbury. 3.05pm: Coventry Stakes (Group Two) Charlie Brooks – Aidan O'Brien's second string quite often represents good value and so it's Warsaw for me. Marcus Armytage – American Gulf was obviously showing up well at home to justify favouritism first time out. Trainer Paul Cole used to farm these races. Marlborough – Rock On Thunder did well to win in tricky conditions on debut and the third and fifth from that race won at the weekend. 3.40pm: King Charles III Stakes (Group One) Charlie Brooks – Mgheera is going in the right direction for her new trainer. Marcus Armytage – Believing consistently found one or two too good last year, but she's now in foal to Frankel and it's amazing how often pregnancy in a mare can bring out some improvement. Marlborough – Believing seemed to be better than ever in April when winning at Meydan and deserves to win a Group 1 on these shores. 4.20pm: St James's Palace Stakes (Group One) Charlie Brooks – Field Of Gold is the best three year old colt in Europe. (NAP) Marcus Armytage – I'm not sure Field Of Gold is way clear of either Henri Matisse or Ruling Court, but he appears to hold the aces in a race for the ages. Marlborough – Field Of Gold will enjoy the likely pacemakers as much as his opponents and the most impressive Guineas winner out of the three in the field can land the spoils. 5pm: Ascot Stakes (Handicap) Charlie Brooks – Ascending for Henry de Bromhead. Irish National Hunt trainers do well in these staying handicaps. Marcus Armytage – All eyes will be on Royal runner Reaching High but stablemate Poniros, who won the Triumph Hurdle at 100-1, can spoil the party. Marlborough – Willie Mullins is usually a trainer to keep on the right side of in these races and two of Reaching High's last three runs suggest this stamina test will suit. 5.35pm: Wolferton Stakes (Listed) Charlie Brooks – Ecureuil Secret was hugely impressive at Epsom – he can back up here. Marcus Armytage – Ecureuil Secret was excellent at Epsom and should come on for the run. The only concern is the quick ground. (NAP) Marlborough – This has been the plan for Sons And Lovers all spring and the form of his two warm-up runs in Ireland couldn't have worked out better. (NAP) 6.10pm: Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap) Charlie Brooks – You just can't ignore the Willie Mullins/Ryan Moore combination. Charlus is the one. Marcus Armytage – My Mate Mozzie, third a year ago, is only a pound higher this time and has apprentice find-of-the-season Warren Fentiman taking off 5lb. Marlborough – French Master was brought by Wathnan Racing after an impressive victory last time and he can take this before moving on from handicap company. What are the racecards for the week? Kia Joorabchian pays £2m for Royal Ascot horse his son said 'we've got to buy'
The football agent who heads emerging racing power Amo Racing secured the top lot at the Goffs London Sale when buying Hardwicke Stakes runner Ghostwriter Kia Joorabchian splashed more than £2 million on the eve of Royal Ascot to buy a horse his son told him he had to buy. The football agent heads the big spending racing outfit Amo Racing which has ambitions to challenge the leading powers, such as the Coolmore partners and Godolphin. Amo Racing has backed that up with statement purchases at the top bloodstock auctions. Joorabchian's team has a host of runners at the five day royal meeting, which starts on Tuesday, but topped it up with two more buys at the Goffs London Sale on Monday evening. Joorabchian landed the top lot when bidding £2 million for the Clive Cox-trained Group 1 campaigner Ghostwriter, who was third behind City Of Troy in both the Eclipse Stakes and Juddmonte International last year. Ghostwriter will become its highest profile horse since King Of Steel, who delivered royal meeting honours by winning the King Edward VII Stakes in 2023 on the way to adding the Champion Stakes at the end of that year. He is set to run in the Hardwicke Stakes on Saturday in the Amo Racing silks, who also bought Hampton Court Stakes entry Tycoon for £600,000. 'To be honest, my son picked this horse out a little while ago and he said 'We've got to buy this!',' reported the owner, whose previous Goffs London Sale purchases include Beresford Stakes winner Crypto Force. 'Maxi isn't here, but I've got my adopted son, Alex Elliott with me. Anyway, he didn't want to buy it so he doesn't have any pressure. This one's on me. 'Ghostwriter is third favourite for the Hardwicke and I think he's got a chance to go up to Group 1 level, so we'll see.' Tycoon, who finished third in the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood last time for owner-breeder Bjorn Nielsen, was knocked down to Nick Bell, on behalf of Amo. Bell said: 'I thought he was very impressive at Windsor when he won, and then he didn't quite stay at Goodwood. 'I'm very keen to run him in the Golden Gates on Saturday, and I think Kia is intending on leaving him with the Gosdens for that race at least. He's lightly raced and has a big pedigree, so he has the right profile to put in a big run. 'He's going to be a single-figure price on Saturday. If he runs well in that he'd end up looking well bought at this sort of money, especially considering the different jurisdictions he could race in. I thought he was a fair price.'
