'I'm being paid to fix issues caused by AI'
However, some businesses are rushing in, and as Ms Skidd shows, it can often create more work and costs than originally intended.Certainly, that's the experience of Sophie Warner, co-owner of Create Designs, a digital marketing agency in Hampshire in the UK.In the last six to eight months, she seen a surge in requests for help from clients who have turned to AI for a quick fix, but have run into problems."Before clients would message us if they were having issues with their site or wanted to introduce new functionality," says Ms Warner. "Now they are going to ChatGPT first."Ms Warner says this has led to clients adding code to their website that has been suggested by ChatGPT. This, she says, has resulted in websites crashing and clients becoming vulnerable to hackers. She points to one client who, instead of manually updating their event page, which she says would have taken 15 minutes, instead turned to ChatGPT for easier instructions. The error ultimately "cost them about £360 and their business was down for three days".Ms Warner says it also happens to larger clients too."We are spending more time educating clients on the consequences [of using AI]. "We often have to charge an investigation fee to find out what has gone wrong, as they don't want to admit it, and the process of correcting these mistakes takes much longer than if professionals had been consulted from the beginning."Prof Feng Li, associate dean for research and innovation at Bayes Business School, says some businesses are too optimistic about what current AI tools can do.He points out that AI is known to hallucinate - to generate content that is irrelevant, made-up, or inconsistent."Human oversight is essential," he says."We've seen companies generate low-quality website content or implement faulty code that breaks critical systems."Poor implementation can lead to reputational damage and unexpected costs – and even significant liabilities, often requiring rework by professionals."
In Gujarat in northwesten India, copywriter Kashish Barot says she has been editing content written by AI for US-based clients to make it appear more human and remove sentence patterns that make it sound like AI.Despite the often-poor quality of the content, she says clients are becoming used to the speed of AI and that is creating unrealistic expectations."AI really makes everyone think it's a few minutes work," says Ms Barot, who says clients are using Open AI's ChatGPT."However good copyediting, like writing, takes time because you need to think and not curate like AI, which also doesn't understand nuance well because it's curating the data."The hype around AI has prompted many companies to experiment without clear goals, adequate infrastructure, or a realistic understanding of what the technology can deliver, says Prof Li."For example, companies must assess whether they have the right data infrastructure, governance processes, and in-house capabilities to support AI use. Relying on off-the-shelf tools without understanding their limitations can lead to poor outcomes," he says.OpenAI says that ChatGPT can help with a wide range of tasks, "but results vary depending on the model used, the user's experience working with AI, and how the prompt is written".It also points out that there are several versions of ChatGPT."Each of our models has different capabilities for completing different tasks."
Is Warner worried about the impact of AI, if – as expected – it rapidly improves?"Yes and no," she says. "While it seems like a quick and inexpensive option, AI rarely takes into account unique brand identity, target demographics, or conversion-focused design. As a result, much of the output looks generic and can actually damage the brand's reputation or effectiveness."She adds: "While AI can be a helpful tool, it simply cannot replace the value of human expertise and context in our industry."

Trump celebrates tax bill victory at Iowa fairground rally
DES MOINES, IOWA, July 3 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump took a victory lap in friendly territory on Thursday, celebrating passage of his massive tax-cut and border security bill among supporters at the Iowa State Fairground. Trump flew to the state, which voted for him by large margins during the last three presidential elections, directly after the U.S. House of Representatives passed his 'big, beautiful bill' and sent it to his desk to be enacted into law. 'Every major promise I made to the people of Iowa in 2024 became a promise kept,' Trump told the crowd of thousands at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. By visiting the state Trump was reinforcing his image as a president who delivers on his promises, especially to his rural and conservative base. Trump said he will sign the bill at a White House ceremony on Friday, the Independence Day holiday in the United States and the deadline he had set for Congress to approve the mammoth piece of legislation. The measure will give Trump billions of dollars to press forward with his domestic agenda, ramping up migrant deportations and cutting taxes while rolling back health benefits and food assistance. 'This bill includes the largest tax cut in American history, the largest spending cut in American history, the largest border security investment in American history,' Trump said. The package will add $3.4 trillion to the nation's $36.2 trillion debt, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The passage of the bill marked weeks of arm twisting by Trump and his allies in Congress to convince skeptical Republicans to push through the bill on a rapid timetable. It was part of a string of victories for Trump in recent days, including convincing Iran and Israel to agree to a ceasefire after the United States struck Iran's nuclear sites last month. Trump lambasted Democrats in Congress for voting against the measure, which passed on party-line votes in both chambers. He attributed that to Democrats hating him. 'But I hate them too," he said. Trump said the vote will make for campaign fodder during next year's midterm elections, when control of Congress will be at stake. Some Republicans worry that deep cuts to the Medicaid health program in the bill will hurt the party's prospects in the 2026 midterm elections. The president said the bill will bolster his already aggressive immigration enforcement and deportation efforts but again pledged to work with farms and hotels concerned about a thinning labor force. Trump's trade policies have whipsawed agricultural communities in Iowa, creating economic uncertainty and testing loyalties. Iowa farmers have been hit hard, especially with China's retaliatory tariffs slashing soybean exports and prices. Reuters spoke to five attendees at the rally who said they braved the sweltering heat to show support for Trump. Most praised his handling of immigration and grocery prices. Despite widespread media coverage, only one of the five was aware of the existence of the tax-cut bill and praised it for giving Trump more resources for immigration enforcement.

EU sticks with timeline for AI rules
BRUSSELS, July 4 (Reuters) - The European Union's landmark rules on artificial intelligence will be rolled out according to the legal timeline in the legislation, the European Commission said on Friday, dismissing calls from some companies and countries for a pause. Google owner Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab, Facebook owner Meta (META.O), opens new tab and other U.S. companies as well as European businesses such as Mistral and ASML ( opens new tab have in recent days urged the Commission to delay the AI Act by years. "I've seen, indeed, a lot of reporting, a lot of letters and a lot of things being said on the AI Act. Let me be as clear as possible, there is no stop the clock. There is no grace period. There is no pause," Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier told a press conference. "We have legal deadlines established in a legal text. The provisions kicked in February, general purpose AI model obligations will begin in August, and next year, we have the obligations for high risk models that will kick in in August 2026," he said. The Commission plans to propose steps to simplify its digital rules towards the end of the year, such as cutting back on reporting obligations for small companies. Some companies have voiced concerns about the compliance costs and tough requirements of the AI rules, which aim to set guardrails on a technology key to multiple sectors of the economy and currently led by the United States and China.
