‘Better than past Federal leaders'

Published on: Fri, May 09, 2025 Text Size: Felix stressed that nine out of the 13 issues related to the MA63 demands have been fully resolved. Kota Kinabalu: Although several Sabah leaders held federal minister posts for dozens of years, their achievements are no match for Upko's where fighting for the rights of the state is concerned. 'We are not just speaking out, we are acting. We put forward proposals, we fight for the implementation of MA63 and we ensure that the demands of the people of Sabah are given due attention in national policy,' said its Youth Chief Felix Joseph Saang. He was responding to actions of some groups trying to belittle Upko President Datuk Ewon Benedick's efforts in fighting for the rights and interests of Sabah. 'Ewon's excellence in achieving several successes regarding the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) is far better than other leaders. 'Among the most obvious successes is the Amendment of the Inland Revenue Board Act (IRB) to include official representatives of the Sabah and Sarawak Governments in addition to the increase in special grants as an interim solution which now amounts to RM600 million, the highest so far. We will certainly continue to demand 40 per cent rights,' he said in a statement. Felix stressed that nine out of the 13 issues related to the MA63 demands have been fully resolved. All this happened during the Unity Government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Upko being represented in the Federal Cabinet. Felix said Upko is now among the most active voices demanding implementation of MA63, especially administrative rights, state revenue and infrastructure development in Sabah. 'Some of the demands fought by Upko have received positive feedback from the Federal Government,' he said. Felix criticised the political culture of some leaders who speak loud without solutions or thoughtful ideas. 'We do not want to be leaders only good at talking outside, but fail in the Cabinet and Parliament. 'It thus positions Upko as one of the important pillars in today's Unity Government.' * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mustapha open to friendly contests if seat talks fail
Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Mohamad Fadli, FMT Text Size: SERDANG: Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud ( pic ) says he is open to 'friendly contests' between allies if the ongoing negotiations over seat allocations ahead of the Sabah state election fail. Mustapha said PKR is working to prevent clashes between parties in the government coalition, and aiming for fair seat distribution without overlaps. Advertisement 'We're still negotiating and doing our best to avoid contests. The goal is fair allocation without duplication,' he said. 'But if talks break down, friendly contests are an option. It's common in politics.' He did not specify which parties are involved in the negotiations. Mustapha, the deputy higher education minister, was speaking to reporters at an event at Universiti Putra Malaysia here today. Sabah Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak yesterday suggested that overlapping seats be handled through friendly contests, while maintaining unity and a shared objective. He said this approach was better than allowing internal tensions or encouraging sponsored independent candidates. Mustapha said PKR's main priority was political stability, and warned that clashes at the state level could strain relationships within the federal government. 'I urge everyone to stay open-minded. There's no benefit in fighting among ourselves and risking division. 'We want unity to continue. Avoiding unnecessary contests can help reduce friction among parties,' he said. - FMT * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ukraine says Russian strikes hit Kharkiv, killing two
KYIV: Fresh Russian strikes on Ukraine's northeastern city of Kharkiv killed two people and wounded 54 including children early Wednesday, authorities said, as Moscow pushed ahead with its relentless attacks after rejecting an unconditional ceasefire. 'Seventeen strikes by enemy UAVs (drones) were carried out in two districts of the city tonight,' Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov said on Telegram, later adding that 37 people were wounded and 'several people were rescued from houses engulfed in flames'. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said eight children were wounded in the attack. Russia has escalated its bombardments of Ukraine despite US President Donald Trump urging Moscow to end its three-year invasion, with Kyiv launching retaliatory attacks deep inside Russian territory. After a previous overnight barrage of more than 300 drones and seven missiles on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Kyiv's Western allies to respond with 'concrete action'. 'Action from America, which has the power to force Russia into peace. Action from Europe, which has no alternative but to be strong,' Zelensky wrote on social media. Peace talks in Turkey last week failed to yield a breakthrough towards ending the conflict, with Russia rejecting calls for an unconditional ceasefire and demanding Ukraine give up its territory and bid to join NATO. But the two sides agreed to swap more than 1,000 prisoners of war and hand over the bodies of dead soldiers, swapping groups of captured soldiers on Monday and Tuesday. Prisoner exchanges Kharkhiv, which lies less than 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the Russian border, has been hit by a surge in large-scale nighttime attacks over the past week. Wednesday's strikes left a five-story building on fire in Slobidskyi district, while several houses were hit in Osnovyansky district, Mayor Terekhov said. He said 'there may be people trapped under the rubble'. The attack came after Russia pummelled the city on Saturday in what Terekhov called 'the most powerful attack' on Kharkiv since the start of the war. Four people were killed and more than 50 wounded as homes and apartment blocks were hit overnight and guided bombs were dropped on the city on Saturday afternoon. Ukraine is also stepping up its drone attacks on Russia, targeting military production and bases. On Tuesday, one person was killed and four others wounded in a drone attack that destroyed a convenience store in the Russian region of Belgorod, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. Nevertheless, the two sides carried out a second prisoner of war swap on Tuesday. The deal should see the freeing of all captured soldiers under the age of 25, as well as those who are sick or severely wounded, though neither side has specified the number of soldiers involved. But Zelensky has said it is 'pointless' to hold further talks with the current Russian delegation -- who he previously dismissed as 'empty heads' -- since they could not agree to a ceasefire. As a condition for halting its invasion, Russia has demanded that Ukraine cede the territories Moscow says it has annexed and forswear joining NATO. It has also rejected a proposed 30-day unconditional ceasefire sought by Kyiv and the European Union, arguing that this would allow Ukrainian forces to rearm with Western deliveries. Ukraine is demanding a complete Russian withdrawal of from its territory and security guarantees from the West.

Autonomy is a right under MA63: Warisan
Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 Text Size: Mazliwati's statement comes amid growing public calls for stronger state rights and cleaner governance, particularly in light of Sabah's ongoing push to reclaim powers under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Kota Kinabalu: Sabah needs leadership that is grounded in integrity, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the rights and dignity of its people, said Warisan Supreme Councillor and MA63 Research Head, Mazliwati Abdul Malek. Highlighting Sabah's rich culture, abundant resources and resilient spirit, Mazliwati emphasised the urgent need for the state to regain full autonomy in managing its own affairs – economically, environmentally, and socially – without what she described as 'unnecessary outside control.' Advertisement 'Autonomy is not a privilege. It is our right under the Malaysia Agreement 1963, and it must be safeguarded,' she said in a statement. She also issued a stern warning against the dangers of corruption, pointing out that leaders who prioritise personal gain compromise Sabah's institutions and future. 'Corrupt leaders are easily manipulated and become weak negotiators, making it impossible for Sabah to stand strong or secure the best outcomes for its people,' she stressed. Mazliwati called for integrity to be placed at the heart of the state's pursuit of self-governance. 'In our pursuit of greater self-governance, integrity must be treated not as an option, but as an absolute requirement. 'We must demand leaders who are clean, principled, and deeply rooted in service – not those who serve themselves or bow to distant powers,' she said. She added that Sabah's progress depends not only on policy direction, but on the character of its leaders. She urged voters to be vigilant and to choose leaders who truly represent Sabah's voice and interests. 'The time has come to think beyond personalities and promises, and instead to commit to a leadership that is local, clean, and determined to see Sabah truly thrive,' she concluded.
