Sabahans have two choices in coming polls: Maslan
Published on: Fri, Jul 18, 2025 Text Size: Maslan urged Sabahans to view the M4S framework in a broader light, describing S4S as a seasonal slogan that tends to re-emerge during elections. Kota Kinabalu: Sabahans are faced with two major ideological paths in the 17th Sabah State Election – Malaysia for Sabahans (M4S) or Sabah for Sabahans (S4S). While S4S is being championed by local political parties advocating state autonomy and local interests, M4S is framed as a more national-centric agenda promoting inclusivity and unity within the Malaysian Federation.
Advertisement Umno Central War Room Secretariat Chief, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, said the M4S concept aims to promote national unity, integration and equity while still respecting the rights and interests of Sabahans. 'M4S also means that Sabahans are not only for Sabah but for entire Malaysia. After all, we are one nation of 14 states and territories,' he said. He was speaking during a working visit to the state on Wednesday night, adding that the S4S agenda is more limited in scope compared to the broader and more inclusive M4S. However, he made no reference to the Sarawak situation which also emphasises a 'Sarawak first' policy, where Federal Government departments are also headed by Sarawakians, unlike in Sabah. According to Maslan, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 Sabahans are currently in Peninsular Malaysia for work, education or due to intermarriage. It is a testament, he said, to the inclusive nature of the Malaysian federation. 'Wouldn't it be better for Malaysia to belong to all Sabahans? Sabahans can travel to Sarawak and the Peninsula, and at the same time, Sarawakians and Peninsular Malaysians can find a home here in Sabah too,' he said. He said many from the peninsula and Sarawak are already integrated into Sabah society, serving as police officers, military personnel, teachers, doctors, nurses, technicians, engineers, and more. He urged Sabahans to view the M4S framework in a broader light, describing S4S as a seasonal slogan that tends to re-emerge during elections. On Sabah umno's autonomy, particularly in selecting candidates, he said the party employs a consultative approach, carefully listening to every proposal submitted. 'But let's be clear. There are no Peninsular Malaysians heading Umno at any level in Sabah. It is the Sabahans who lead the party here.' At the same time, Ahmad said Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) needed to win all, or at least a majority of the seats it contests if it hoped to be the core component in forming a new unity government after the election. He believes this is achievable if the party machinery can rally voters to unite behind Umno-BN candidates, with the party expected to contest up to 30 seats. 'In politics, nothing is impossible. We can regain the people's trust to rise again, especially after Sabahans have experienced several changes in government,' he said. He added that strategies for the upcoming state election have been finalised and handed over to each division's party machinery to execute for maximum impact. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Puad denies Umno-PN backdoor talks
Puad Zarkashi said he would have been the first to object to a proposal for Umno to forge a new government with PN. PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has rubbished claims that party representatives have been meeting with Perikatan Nasional leaders for talks on forming a new government. He claimed that it was PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man who initiated contact with Umno intermediaries and allegedly offered the party the prime minister's post if it agreed to a plan for a backdoor government. 'But that idea was never brought to or discussed in the Supreme Council. Even if it had been, I would have been the first to speak up and strongly oppose it,' he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian. His remarks were in response to Tuan Ibrahim's statement that Umno leaders had held discreet meetings with PN leaders to explore 'cross-party movement' led by PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin. Speaking to the media at the Selangor PAS Youth muktamar yesterday, Tuan Ibrahim also reportedly invited dissatisfied Umno members to join PN, likening it to 'leaving a sinking ship'. Puad dismissed the overture and said Umno would not repeat what he described as a mistake of the past. 'Tuan Ibrahim knows full well that Umno will not fall into the same trap again. All of this is just an attempt to lure us in,' he said. 'The idea of Umno working with PAS, let alone Bersatu, is nothing but a dream.' The last time Umno, Bersatu and PAS cooperated was when they formed the government in March 2020 following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration.

In a statement posted on the Sarawakku Facebook page in conjunction with the Sarawak Day 2025 celebration, the Premier described Miri not only as an economic hub but also as a reflection of Sarawak's strength in diversity, built on the foundations of its oil and gas industry. 'It symbolises the progress of our state and the harmony among our multiracial communities,' he added in a statement shared via the Sarawakku Facebook page today in conjunction with the Sarawak Day 2025 celebration. He also revealed that this year's Sarawak Day celebration carries the theme 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' (Progressive and Prosperous Sarawak), underscoring the government's commitment to strengthening ties between the state and its people across all ethnic backgrounds. He thus stressed that unity among Sarawakians is the cornerstone for sustainable development as Sarawak moves toward becoming a high-income and developed region by 2030 while also praising Sarawak's long-standing racial and religious harmony, urging the people to preserve this legacy as a source of strength and identity. The Premier also reaffirmed the Sarawak government's commitment to implementing the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, aimed at achieving inclusive socio-economic growth. 'The Sarawak government will continue pushing forward the digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI), environmental sustainability, and the development of core sectors such as oil and gas, tourism, modern agriculture, and plantations,' he said. On education, he announced that beginning next year, the Sarawak government will provide free tertiary education in selected fields at state-owned universities to reduce the financial burden on families and promote equal access to higher learning. Abang Johari further reiterated Sarawak's determination to uphold its rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), calling on Sarawakians to remain united in support of this cause. 'May Sarawak continue to progress, prosper, and stand as a model of harmony in Malaysia. Happy Sarawak Day 2025,' he concluded in the Facebook post.
