
Newark airport disruption grounds United Airlines' Q3 forecast
United Airlines trimmed its third-quarter profit forecast on July 17 after continuing operational disruptions at Newark Liberty International Airport dented its performance for a second straight quarter. The airline cited infrastructure issues, air traffic control bottlenecks, and severe weather impacts that disproportionately hit its busiest hub.
According to Reuters, United now expects a 0.9 percentage point decline in Q3 profit margin due to Newark-related complications—after a 1.2-point hit in the second quarter. This has led to adjusted earnings per share forecasts falling below Wall Street expectations.
United operates over 70% of its domestic flights through Newark, making any issues at the airport disproportionately harmful to its operations.
The problems aren't new: earlier in the year, a combination of runway construction, aging ground equipment, and limited radar coverage caused cascading flight delays. According to CNBC, over 30% of United's flights through Newark experienced delays in June and early July, far higher than the national average.
In a call with investors, United CEO Scott Kirby described the situation as 'a perfect storm of systemic issues,' noting that persistent problems at Newark could limit growth despite otherwise strong travel demand.
He emphasized the need for FAA and Port Authority coordination to resolve traffic bottlenecks, calling the current state 'unsustainable for a global hub.' Despite the Newark-specific challenges, United's overall demand outlook remains healthy.
Passenger revenue grew 6.3% year-over-year in Q2, and international routes — particularly across the Atlantic and South Pacific — remain profitable, according to Yahoo Finance. Business travel recovery continues, albeit unevenly across regions.
The airline said it expects full-year capacity to increase by 5%, although operational issues could limit peak-season availability.
The carrier is also facing increased labor costs, including a new union agreement with pilots approved earlier this month, which adds long-term cost pressure.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has acknowledged the strain at Newark and has floated plans to reduce scheduled flights during peak hours.
However, United argues this approach punishes carriers rather than addressing root problems like outdated air traffic control systems and slow infrastructure modernization.
Newark, operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has lagged behind other major airports in upgrades, despite recent renovations to terminals.
United is calling for federal investment in radar and control tower technology to modernize the hub. As The Wall Street Journal reports, airline industry groups have also lobbied for new NextGen satellite-based navigation to reduce congestion.United's stock fell about 3% in premarket trading following the profit warning, and analysts have started adjusting earnings models to reflect persistent Newark underperformance. Bank of America downgraded the stock to 'Neutral', citing 'execution risk tied to Newark throughput and infrastructure reliance.' Still, the airline remains profitable and sees room for margin expansion — if disruptions ease. Its cargo operations also posted a 9% YoY gain, and loyalty revenue from its MileagePlus program continues to grow.
United is working with regulators to explore temporary slot adjustments, rerouting options, and more automation on the ground to manage turnaround times better.
However, until Newark's issues are fixed, the hub's challenges are likely to remain a drag on earnings — even as the broader travel market continues to recover.

'We are just allowing these players to have time to think and to decide. If we reach a point where they have to join the team, they will join the team because they are our players. 'I know for a fact that these people, Omar and Jason, and the club have a number (price) for these players. If they don't reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that. 'I understand clubs are maybe waiting for the last minute, but they can have a surprise and I'm ready. I'm ready to receive the players. 'They have more competition - if you want to play in the World Cup you need to play, so I'm really happy with that because I have more options. If they have to fight each other to play, for me it is perfect.' United have spent about £130million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon but are still in the market for a defensive midfielder and a striker. However, previous mis-steps on transfers mean United are being more circumspect this summer. 'At the moment, our club needs to be really careful when we sign a player,' added Amorim. 'So if we have to start the season with this squad, I'm happy because all the players that are here want to be here - and that for me is the most important thing.'

Fact check: Could Trump's trade tariffs pay off the US deficit?
One of the Trump administration's biggest tariff boosters, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, recently said tariffs will not only energise the industrial sector in the United States but also help the government's finances. During a July 20 interview on CBS's Face the Nation, Lutnick told host Margaret Brennan that the US is collecting close to $30bn a month in tariffs. 'You got to remember – this is going to pay off our deficit. This is going to make America stronger,' he said. But the maths falls short. Multiplying the most recent month of US tariff collections by a full decade would not cover the 10-year costs of President Donald Trump's new tax-and-spending legislation, much less all federal deficits during that decade. The current tariffs are slated to increase on August 1, including levies ranging from 20 percent to 40 percent for 21 countries, based on what the Trump administration has said. An analysis by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) – Congress's nonpartisan number-crunching arm – also projects that 10 years of tariff revenue increases under Trump will not pay for the added deficits from his bill or the cumulative deficits over the next decade. The projected added deficit from the bill is $3.4 trillion, on top of the existing projected deficit over the next decade of $21.8 trillion. 'I can't envision a scenario where the tariff revenues eliminate the deficit,' said Steve Ellis, president of Taxpayers for Common Sense, a group that tracks the federal budget. The White House did not respond to a request for comment for this story. How much is the US collecting from Trump tariffs? The federal government has been taking in higher tariff revenues under Trump's more aggressive tariff policies. Currently, the tariffs are a baseline 10 percent for all countries, plus additional tariffs on some products such as steel. Economists say consumers will ultimately swallow much of the tariff increases. Federal tariff revenue tracked by the Penn-Wharton Budget Model shows that, up to July 11, the federal government had collected about $100bn in tariffs so far this year. During the same period in 2024, before Trump took office, the federal government had collected less than $48bn in tariff revenue. In June 2025, the most recent monthly data available, the federal government took in $27bn in tariffs, according to the Treasury Department. A year earlier, that figure was $6bn. That's an increase of $21bn a month because of Trump's trade policies. If the government were to continue collecting tariff revenue at the June 2025 pace for a full decade – 120 months – that would produce $2.52 trillion in tariff revenue. That is in the ballpark of what the CBO published in June. Taking into account the potential economic shrinkage from higher tariffs, such as higher consumer prices, CBO projected that the boost in tariff revenue would reduce total federal deficits by $2.8 trillion over 10 years. How does this tariff revenue compare with the federal deficit? Without adding in the deficits from the bill Trump just signed, CBO's baseline projection for the cumulative deficits over the next 10 years is almost $21.8 trillion. That is about seven times the size of the CBO's projected tariff revenues over the same period. And the projected tariff revenue under Trump would not fully cover the added deficits just from the 'megabill' Trump signed. According to CBO estimates, the law Trump signed on July 4 will raise deficits by $3.4 trillion beyond their previous trajectory over the next 10 years, which exceeds CBO's tariff revenue projection. There is uncertainty about how much tariff revenue Trump's policies will generate, because he has frequently announced and then paused higher tariffs. 'It is hard to know what the end game is,' Ellis said. 'Is it high tariffs to generate revenue, which would reduce economic activity, or is it to rebalance the trade and eventually lower tariffs', and thus their revenue? The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a fiscally hawkish group, has noted that Trump's tariff policies have been challenged in court, and the initial ruling by the Court of International Trade went against the administration. If the initial ruling is upheld on appeal, then Trump would lose his power to unilaterally enact many of the tariffs he has been imposing, and the new tariff revenues now being generated would largely dry up. And even if Trump's tariff powers are upheld on appeal, Trump's successor could reverse them by executive order, meaning any tariff revenues would cover the next four years, not the next 10 years. Our ruling Lutnick said tariffs are 'going to pay off our deficit'. Trump's on-again, off-again pattern for implementing tariffs makes estimates tricky. But two projections show that the Trump administration's tariff revenues would not cover the next 10 years of projected deficits. The CBO said it expects tariff revenues to reach $2.8 trillion over the next 10 years, while a back-of-the-envelope calculation based on the tariffs collected in June 2025 would reach $2.52 trillion. Both sums are only a fraction of the nearly $22 trillion in cumulative deficits projected over the next 10 years. We rate the statement False.

EU and US edge closer to trade deal as tariff deadline looms
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that negotiations between the European Union and the United States over a long-running trade dispute are making progress. Speaking in Berlin on Wednesday ahead of a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron, Merz said, 'We have been hearing in the last few minutes that there could possibly be decisions,' referring to ongoing talks aimed at avoiding steep tariffs on European goods. The United States has threatened to impose a 30 percent tariff on EU exports if no agreement is reached by August 1. But hopes for a breakthrough rose this week after reports that both sides are close to a deal that would set a 15 percent tariff rate on EU goods – a compromise similar to a recent agreement between the US and Japan. Macron said that European leaders and the European Commission had been in 'constant contact' to coordinate their response to the US pressure. He added: 'We want the lowest possible tariffs, but also to be respected as the partners that we are.' US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent echoed the optimism, telling Bloomberg Television that the talks were 'going better than they had been', and that progress was being made. Diplomats say the recent deal between Washington and Tokyo has increased pressure on Brussels to accept a compromise, even if reluctantly. 'The Japan agreement made clear the terms of the shakedown,' an EU diplomat told the Financial Times. 'Most member states are holding their noses and could take this deal.' If finalised, the EU-US deal could include some exemptions, such as for aircraft, medical devices and alcoholic beverages, according to the newspaper. However, the European Commission, which leads trade policy for the EU, has already prepared a plan to hit back with more than $100bn in tariffs if talks collapse. It comes as EU exporters have already been facing a 10 percent tariff on goods sent to the US since April, on top of pre-existing levies.
