Erin Blanchfield vs. Maycee Barber point of interest: Striking in the small cage
The main event in Las Vegas features a women's flyweight affair between two top-five fighters familiar with exchanging in the smaller octagon of the Apex.
Initially coming through Dana White's Contender Series when it was still hosted in the old "TUF" gym, Maycee Barber has quietly accrued some solid experience under the UFC banner – though in that experience, she never had missed weight until Friday. Barber came in a half-pound heavy for the headliner.
A large and powerful athlete for her division, Barber can pack some serious pop compared to her contemporaries. "The Future" still maintains her in-and-out sensibilities from her background in karate, but Barber has made steady efforts to settle down and improve her fundamental striking since spreading her time around with other camps like Team Alpha Male and company.
Now working with striking coaches like Guilherme Faria, Barber has slowly shown more of a feinting and jabbing process as opposed to wading forward with naked kicks and punches.
Primarily fighting from southpaw, Barber wields dangerous offerings off of her left side that range from head kicks to crosses. And when Barber is feeling in stride and can corral her opponents to the cage, she unleashes wicked elbows and Eddie Alvarez-esque punching combos with how animated her hooks can get.
That said, Barber is not beyond being taxed for coming in hot and will need to be careful opposite Erin Blanchfield.
Although Blanchfield has been primarily billed as a grappler, the native New Yorker has made measurable strides in her striking game since working with MK Muay Thai in New Jersey. Steadily pressuring forward behind a prodding jab, Blanchfield employs solid form in her straight punches and front teeps to enter space.
When feeling in stride, Blanchfield can shift to southpaw where she has shown a knack for left crosses and high kicks.
Once Blanchfield can establish herself in the clinch, the 26-year-old smartly prioritizes frames that allow her to get off deceptively effective elbows and knees in close. But considering that Barber also makes her money in this space, I'll be curious to see how the closed-quarter combat shakes out.
Erin Blanchfield vs. Maycee Barber breakdown: Potential grappling threats
Considering Blanchfield's on-paper edges and opportunistic submission acumen, no one should be shocked if "Ice Cold" looks for takedowns early and often.
Since storming onto the scene as the first female EBI flyweight champion, Blanchfield has only continued to grow her grappling abilities in mixed martial arts. Appearing to be an avid driller in the wrestling realm, Blanchfield sequences her attacks like second nature, chaining particularly well from single-leg positions.
Whether Blanchfield is sweeping the standing leg or looking to double off into a more traditional shot, the 7-year pro is certainly not short on ideas in this space. Once she's able to secure top position off of takedowns, Blanchfield's brand of high-percentage choices continues to show itself on the floor.
From cross-wrist rides that lead to pins to kimura traps that allow for positional advances, Blanchfield displays a bevy of high-level tactics that she regularly puts to practice in her fights. Still, larger and stronger athletes have shown to be difficult for Blanchfield to control, so I'm curious as to how she'll stack up against Barber.
Already strong and confident in the clinch from an offensive standpoint, Barber presents a strong first layer of defense for her opponents to break through.
Having a good sense for establishing over-under positions, Barber can work her way out of negative positions and pile on impactful damage in the small openings. Barber's hips seem strong both in the open and against the fence, making double-legs particularly difficult to hit on her (unless her kicks are being countered, of course).
When taken down, Barber has shown a suspect bottom game in past fights as far as her complacency and seeming lack of options.
However, in Barber's defense, she has shown smarter tactical choices in regard to utilizing everything from underhooks to the cage to get back to her feet. And when Babrer is working from top position, she possesses some solid ground and pound that Blanchfield will need to respect.
Erin Blanchfield vs. Maycee Barber odds
The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the New Jersey native, listing Blanchfield -250 and Barber +190 via FanDuel.
Erin Blanchfield vs. Maycee Barber prediction, pick
Although I don't disagree with who is favored, the betting line listed above is starting to get a bit too wide for my liking.
Aside from the fact that women's MMA carries a special kind of volatility from a handicapping and prognostication perspective, Barber has proven to possess some serious X-factors that always make her a live underdog. Whether we're talking about Barber's standout power or her judge-swaying style (which has earned her a couple of questionable scorecards in the UFC), she'll be very lively from start to finish should she avoid getting washed by Blanchfield on the mat.
The potential problem, however, is that Blanchfield – who is very difficult to dissuade in victory or defeat – has some takedown tools that could be very effective against Barber.
So long as Blanchfield doesn't get stuck inside of clinch space with a more dangerous threat in Barber, then I see her single-leg chaining ability being problematic for a first-layer defender who emphasizes on hips and upper-body controls. And though we should all leave some room to be surprised when it comes to Barber and any potential improvements she's made during this one-year layoff she's coming off of, the 27-year-old has shown little outside of recent underhook getup attempts (which can get her front choked if she's not careful) that gives me enough confidence to back her here.
Add in the fact that this fight is taking place in the smaller octagon of the Apex, and I can't help but side with Blanchfield to get her win conditions and potentially take Barber to "exposure city" via a rear-naked choke in Round 2.
Prediction: Blanchfield inside the distance
Erin Blanchfield vs. Maycee Barber start time, how to watch
As the main event, Burns and Morales are expected to make their walks to the octagon at approximately 11:15 p.m. ET. The fight airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Magomed Ankalaev claims Alex Pereira 'never coming back,' will move on from UFC rematch

Magomed Ankalaev claims Alex Pereira 'never coming back,' will move on from UFC rematch Magomed Ankalaev is sick of waiting for a rematch date that accommodates Alex Pereira and is prepared to move on to something else. After taking the light heavyweight title from Pereira (12-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) by unanimous decision at UFC 313 in March, Ankalaev (21-1-1 MMA, 12-1-1 UFC) said he's been ready and willing for the sequel to be confirmed. He claims multiple dates have been offered, including the UFC 317 headliner during International Fight Week on June 28 in Las Vegas. Still, though, nothing has been finalized, and it appears Ankalaev now thinks it never will be. He bluntly said Sunday on social media he thinks Pereira essentially is retired and won't compete again, and therefore he wants to move on to the next contender. (via X): "Alex (is) done he never coming back," Ankalaev wrote. "Let's move on – June, July, August, I said yes." If the Ankalaev vs. Pereira rematch does not come to fruition, there is multiple potential opponents for his first 205-pound title defense. Former champion Jiri Prochazka is the likely leading candidate, Carlos Ulberg is on a seven-fight winning streak in the weight class and on June 21, ex-champ Jamahal Hill meets Khalil Rountree in the UFC on ABC 8 main event in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Transfer window predictions: Top 10 players who could be on the move this summer

With the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Matheus Cunha and Dean Huijsen already sealing big transfers this summer, who are we predicting joins them in making a move? MORE — Full list of ins and outs for all 20 Premier League clubs Below we select 10 players to keep an eye on as plenty of big names are expected to be on the move this summer. Following his comments after the Europa League final it's clear Garnacho is looking for a move. His individual talent is undoubted but like Marcus Rashford his style of play as an out-and-out winger just doesn't fit Ruben Amorim's system at Manchester United. Napoli have long been interested and Garnacho would be a good replacement, stylistically, for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who departed the Italian champs in January. Chelsea have also been linked with Garnacho and he's probably an upgrade on Jadon Sancho, Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke if they can play to his strengths on the counter. Possible destination: Napoli, Chelsea Dibling has just turned 19 and was hugely impressive at Southampton, one of the worst teams in Premier League history, this season in his first season as a pro. His ability to either trick his way past defenders or drive at them with pace and power means he is a true modern attacking midfielder. Dibling glides with the ball and is often likened to a young Jack Grealish. Both Spurs and Man United need that kind of creativity in the final third but Dibling needs to be careful about picking a club where he will play big minutes rather than just sat on the bench. Possible destination: Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur The Swedish striker has scored goals for fun at Sporting Lisbon but his much publicized release clause, and an agreement with Sporting, means he is highly-likely to move on this summer. Arsenal have been looking for a target forward like Gyokeres for a while, but Man United may hold the ace up their sleeve as Amorim helped Gyokeres become one of the best No. 9's in Europe during their time together at Sporting. It seems like he's destined for the Premier League and his style of play suits it perfectly. Possible destination: Arsenal, Manchester United Along with his Brentford teammate Yoane Wissa, Mbuemo is expected to leave in a big-money deal this summer. The Cameroon forward has been so consistent in the Premier League over the last few years and would improve any of the big boys. His clinical finishing means he'd be an upgrade on the current wide forwards United, Liverpool and Arsenal all have and Mbeumo is ready to take the next step. This deal will be costly and close to $100 million. But it will be worth it. Possible destination: Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal The Brazilian winger had a poor 2024-25 season by his very high standards and it appears he could be the main player Real Madrid look to move on this summer to fund other deals. Rodrygo is an electric winger and when's he is hot he is unstoppable. Arsenal have been linked with a move for him and his experience in the Champions League and winning trophies could be crucial in helping them get over the line. Rodrygo will also have something to prove if Real do decide to sell him. Mikel Arteta would love to ignite that kind of fire in Rodrygo's belly a la Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard. Possible destination: Arsenal Nottingham Forest's star playmaker has a superb season as they qualified for Europe but in order to be a regular for England ahead of a host of other talented No. 10's, Gibbs-White may have to make a big move this summer. With Kevin de Bruyne gone and City seemingly missing out on Florian Wirtz, they have reportedly moved their attentions to Gibbs-White. He would give them a different type of threat from central areas. City have so many similar players in the final third and MGW would give Pep Guardila yet another string to his bow. As if they needed it! Possible destination: Manchester City BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 30: Milos Kerkez of Bournemouth and Tyler Dibling of Southamptonduring the Premier League match between AFC Bournemouth and Southampton FC at Vitality Stadium on September 30, 2024 in Bournemouth, England. (Photo by Robin Jones - AFC Bournemouth/AFC Bournemouth via Getty Images) AFC Bournemouth via Getty Images The Hungarian left back, still just 21, is a man in demand and had a brilliant season for Bournemouth. He gets up and down the wing and can whip in wonderfully accurate crosses and loves to get involved in attacks but is very solid defensively. Sound familiar? With Andy Robertson coming towards the end of his career, Kerkez is the perfect replacement for Liverpool's legendary left back. Possible destination: Liverpool It appears the German superstar really wants the move to Liverpool and this would be a huge show of intent from Arne Slot's side. After already signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, they are now closing in on Leverkusen's star attacking midfielder. Wirtz would be perfect to start in a No. 10 or wide role and he would also bring down the average age of this Liverpool side, which is something Slot and Co. appear keen to do. Wirtz turning down Bayern Munich and Man City was surprising and now Liverpool are ready to pounce. Another transfer window means more months of Sesko being linked with a move to the Premier League. It feels like it will happen this summer with the need for new attackers at plenty of the Premier League's big boys. That fact, plus RB Leipzig not qualifying for Europe for the first time as a Bundesliga club, means that this feels like the right time for Sesko to move on. Depending on who they can move on United would be a good fit as he loves to tuck inside from the left flank. But Arsenal would also be a great fit and he's a more clinical version of Gabriel Martinelli. Possible destination: Manchester United, Arsenal There will be a lot of interest in Marc Guehi as the England international center back captained Crystal Palace to FA Cup glory but it looks like that will be his final game in a Palace shirt. He has just 12 months left on his contract at Palace and they are going to cash in on him this summer rather than lose him for nothing. Guehi has long been chased by Newcastle and that seems like a good bet. Spurs have also been linked with Guehi to boost their center back options and with Cristian Romero linked with a move away, Guehi would be a great replacement. But don't rule out Guehi's former club Chelsea coming in for him too, as they want to upgrade their center back options and Guehi is a Chelsea academy product who would slot straight back in. Possible destination: Newcastle United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur

Matheus Cunha signs for Manchester United — How will he fit in to Amorim's system?

Manchester United have made their first signing of the summer with Matheus Cunha joining them from Wolves. Cunha, 26, has reportedly signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further year, and his arrival will excite United's fans. In a short statement on their website, United confirmed the agreement with Wolves for Cunha as his reported $84 million release clause was triggered. 'Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian forward's signing is subject to visa and registration. During two-and-a-half seasons at Wolves, Cunha has scored 33 goals in 92 appearances. Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.' Will Cunha fit Amorim's system? He will fit in extremely well in the 3-4-2-1 system Amorim loves to play, with Cunha expected to play as one of the Number 10's behind a central striker. Alongside Bruno Fernandes he would be superb, although Fernandes' future at United is in question and the arrival of Cunha suggests he could be a like-for-like replacement. Cunha's quality on the ball is undoubted and he scored 15 goals and added six assists in 33 appearances for Wolves to drag them to Premier League safety after a poor start to the 2024-25 campaign. His quality on the pitch is one reason United signed him, but another big reason is his fire and desire. Sometimes that boils over, as we saw during the last Premier League season, but Amorim is going to need that fighting spirit in abundance to turn around the negative vibes at Old Trafford. Cunha is a player, and a personality, who will not be overawed by the high levels of expectations at United and fans will love his drive and desire.
