Celebrate Matariki With 'Matariki Mā Puanga' Live From Ohakune
LIVE from Tirorangi Marae in Ohakune on Friday June 20, as they lead a powerful celebration of one of Aotearoa's most significant cultural holidays - Matariki.
Now in its fourth year, the prestigious LIVE broadcast is embraced and celebrated across multiple networks and media outlets across Aotearoa. This year, Matariki mā Puanga (previously broadcast with the title Mānawatia a Matariki) begins at 5.45am with the traditional hautapu ceremony, honouring ancient customs and ushering in the Māori New Year.
This year's theme recognises the sacred relationship between the stars Matariki (Pleiades) and Puanga (Rigel), both of which rise in Aotearoa's eastern sky before dawn during the winter season.
As Professor Rangiānehu (Rangi) Mātāmua (Tūhoe) ONZM explains:
'Some iwi and regions look to Puanga rather than Matariki as the primary marker of the New Year. This year, we're broadcasting from Ohakune, in the shadow of Ruapehu, and for the iwi of Ngāti Rangi, Puanga holds special significance. It felt right to acknowledge that in the title of this year's broadcast.
Matariki mā Puanga is a reminder that despite our diverse origins and practices, this celebration brings us together—to reflect, to renew, and to celebrate what unites us.'
Over more than three hours, the broadcast will help New Zealanders understand the cultural history and importance of Matariki, and weave together stories of remembrance, renewal, and joy. There will be regional reports from Wairoa to Tāmaki Makaurau, and beyond, and a very special LIVE Kapa Haka performance Te Kura Nui o Paerangi at Tirorangi.
Adding youthful energy and insight is te reo champion and social media star Te Aorere Pewhairangi (Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau a Ruataupare), reporting from the field.
Audiences will be uplifted by powerful musical performances from across the motu, including:

Tāmaki Makaurau to celebrate te ao Māori with kapa haka showcase
This year's Tāmaki Hakangāhau includes 30-minute kapa haka meet-and-greet sessions - a first for the event - giving haka fans a chance to connect directly with performers backstage. Photo: Supplied / Te Matatini / Tāmaki Hakangāhau Haka fans will come together this weekend to celebrate te ao Māori through haka, waiata and whanaungatanga at Tāmaki Hakangāhau - a non-competitive kapa haka event designed to bring audiences closer to the action. The kaupapa will take place on Saturday at Auckland's Spark Arena, and feature 10 haka rōpū from the region - ranging from veteran performers to tamariki. It also includes a Māori business hub, and a mass waiata singalong to close the night. One of the event organisers, Moko Templeton, said it aimed to turn spectators into participants, with a focus on connection and community. "This isn't just about watching haka," she said. "It's about feeling the whenua shake beneath you, letting tears flow as waiata fills your heart, and leaving with your wairua cup overflowing. "Tāmaki Hakangāhau is our way of wrapping our arms around the entire community." This year's event included 30-minute kapa haka meet-and-greet sessions - a first for the event - giving haka fans a chance to connect directly with performers backstage. Jeff Ruha, kaiako (tutor) of Te Poho o Hinekahukura, said haka had the power to uplift peopel going through tough times. "Every performer stands as medicine for whānau going through hardships," he said. "The world of haka is sustenance - it feeds souls and heals hearts." Alongside the performances, the arena will also host a kaupapa Māori market with kai, taonga, kākahu and fundraising stalls supporting local whānau, kura and Māori-led initiatives. GENEVA AM Returns With Urban Planning, Announces Debut Album Pikipiki

I grew up in the bottom of a big valley with a motorway in my back garden. This area would have been a vast wetland and waterway going out to sea.' 'I made this waiata to help me memorise a pepeha which took my Uncle William his lifetime to learn as he took it upon himself to delve into our whanau history, bringing up all of the mamae of the past and giving the next generation this gift. We initially thought we were from Ngāti Kahungunu but we also share a connection to Ngāti Ruapani as well.' 'My pepeha is a foreign place because I grew up in the city, but I never felt lost or alone because I was fortunate to learn Te Reo Māori at urban schools. Urban Planning is my way of sending it out and making new connections with whanau I've never met.' 'This waiata is about never really being lost because everything around us has been touched by our tīpuna in one way or another – now in our lifetime we get to stitch together uncovered mysteries to further our understanding of the true history of Aotearoa.'
