McDonald's US fans react to new menu item
Published: | Updated:
McDonald's fans take their favourite menu items very seriously and won't hesitate to let the fast food giant know when they're unhappy - as they have demonstrated with uproar over a new menu item. The crispy, peppery Chicken Selects are a firm favorite among McDonald's customers, with many declaring them to be 'elite' chicken strips. But while UK customers get to enjoy them any time, those in the US were disappointed when in 2013, the chain discontinued Chicken Selects on the menu across the pond.
Recently, McDonald's introduced chicken strips again in the US - but they aren't quite what the American audience had hoped for. On May 5, the fast food giant rolled out McCrispy Strips, described as 'irresistibly craveable chicken strips made with juicy, 100% white meat, coated with crispy golden-brown breading and bursting with a bold, new black pepper flavour'. This new version comes as Alyssa Buetikofer, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer at McDonald's, said the demand for chicken strips 'has been remarkable to see across the industry'.
Commenting on why it's taken so long to bring chicken strips back to the US menu, she added: 'We took our time, listened to our fans and created a product we knew they would crave.' But many have taken to social media to complain that McCrispy Strips are simply no match for Chicken Selects. The most noticeable difference is the texture of the battered exterior of the chicken strips.
While Chicken Selects are beloved for their seasoned, crispy coating which delivers a satisfying crunch, McCrispy Strips have a smoother, much less rugged texture - more akin to outside of a McNugget. When McDonald's announced the new chicken menu item in the US, American customers instantly became excited over the prospect that Chicken Selects may have returned. However, they are now taking to social media to complain about how different McCrispy Strips are compared to Chicken Selects - and they aren't holding back about which they prefer.
Even those who thought the McCrispy Strips tasted good admitted that they would have preferred Chicken Selects. 'I just had them today and they're honestly disappointing,' one reviewer said. 'They smelled a lot like the old chicken selects while I drove home with them in the bag, but eating them… yeah, no. 'Just a bland, weirdly breaded, not-at-all crispy chicken strip! I don't understand why they're a permanent addition to the menu. I miss Chicken Selects so, so, so, so, so much!!'
Customers also expressed their displeasure at the fast food chain on X, formerly Twitter. 'McDonald's really played in our face talkin' about some damn 'McCrispy Strips'... WE ASKED FOR THE CHICKEN SELECTS,' one person wrote. Another slammed McDonald's for discontinuing Chicken Selects more than a decade ago, only to bring back a different version.
'You took one of the best items off the menu and then had 12 years to come up with a replacement and this is the slop you've put out,' they said. A third quizzed: '[They're] bringing back dinosaurs, direwolves, AND THEY CAN'T BRING BACK CHICKEN SELECTS???' McDonald's has previously introduced a variation of chicken strips to its US menu in the past, in a bid to satisfy customers still upset about the loss of Chicken Selects.
In 2017, the retailer added Buttermilk Crispy Tenders to the menu. These looked much more similar to Chicken Selects and were popular among customers - but they were discontinued just three years later due to the COVID pandemic. However, McDonald's is standing by its new McCrispy Strips despite the criticism. Cesar Piña, Senior Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer at the chain, said in a press release: 'When we introduce a new menu item like McCrispy Strips, we know we have a big promise to fulfill to meet our customer's expectations.
'From the farms we source from to how food is prepared in our restaurants, bringing new products to our fans requires collaboration across suppliers, franchisees, and company staff. 'We hold ourselves to the highest standard and aim to bring fans nothing less than greatness.'

Former NFL star Taylor Lewan's humiliating first pitch at MLB game goes viral
Former NFL linebacker Taylor Lewan was left devastated after throwing a disastrous first pitch before Thursday's St. Louis Cardinals game. Lewan, who spent the entirety of his career with the Tennessee Titans, was invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch at Busch Stadium alongside his Bussin' With The Boys podcast co-host and fellow ex-football player Will Compton. Yet after stepping up to the plate first, the Titans hero suffered a humiliating moment when he sent his effort miles wide of home plate. His left-handed pitch actually sailed closer to the first-base on-deck circle, where a number of people were watching on. Fortunately no one was struck by the ball, before a distraught Lewan threw his hat to the field and punished himself by getting down for some pushups. To rub salt in the wounds, Compton followed him by throwing a much more successful pitch straight into the hands of the Cardinals pitcher Kyle Leahy. This is the worst day of my athletic career and that includes the Chandler Jones game. I need redemption. — Taylor Lewan (@TaylorLewan77) June 6, 2025 Lewan initially warned social media about the embarrassing video that was about to go viral later that day by posting on X: 'Currently at the Cardinals game, and there's something I need to get ahead of. 'A video will be surfacing of me throwing a pitch from the mound. Let's just say… the haters are going to have an absolute field day.' 'This is the worst day of my athletic career and that includes the Chandler Jones game. I need redemption,' he later concluded, referencing the infamous time he allowed Jones to sack Ryan Tannehill five times while playing for the Titans. Lewan then added in another post: 'No excuses. We have to be better, and there will be redemption.' His pitching nightmare was reminiscent of 50 Cent's shambolic attempt back in 2013, when the rap legend also sent the ball flying wide at a New York Mets game. Lewan enjoyed nine years with Tennessee before retiring from football in 2022, earning three consecutive Pro-Bowl selections in that time.

Marnie Simpson insists she has 'no regrets' over stripping off on OnlyFans and vows to continue while she's 'young' as she fires back at mum-shamers
has insisted that she has 'no regrets' over stripping off on OnlyFans as she fired back at mum-shamers. The Georgie Shore star, 33, who is currently pregnant with her third child, joined the adult subscription website back in 2022 and has since thrilled fans with an array of sizzling lingerie snaps - which she's told is not 'explicit', but 'applied nudity.' And in a new interview, Marnie told how she has no plans to stop showcasing her figure and will continue to do so while she's 'young' as she praised the 'empowering' platform. Marnie went on to note that while she's used to criticism following her years of starring on the controversial MTV show, she remarked that 'no one should have the right to judge others' when it comes to their choices in life. Speaking to The Sun about her decision to share racy photos on the X-rated social media platform, Marnie said she has 'no regrets', explaining: 'While I'm young, I'm going to embrace my body and I'm really proud of my body. Then why not.. I feel empowered by embracing it.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop Following her explicit and drunken antics on Geordie Shore, Marnie told how she's been 'judged and mum-shamed' over the years, but she feels the tide is changing when it comes to adult content creation. She said: 'I honestly feel the stigma and taboo is already breaking down. As the years go by, it's becoming more normalised. So many girls and women and ladies are just having that choice for themselves and I think it's really empowering.' She added that adult content creation is a 'normal thing now' with less 'stigma' than in the past, with the stunner going on to insist that in the current climate, no one should be passing judgement on others for choosing to strip off. Marnie shared: 'I definitely like where it's going because no one should have the right to judge others, there shouldn't really be a stigma around it because not everyone is doing the same thing on there - it's each to their own.' Meanwhile, while she's proud of her OnlyFans career, the reality star also said she doesn't 'live with regret' amid her past antics on Geordie Shore, which she starred in on and off between 2013 to 2025. She told that with the way the world is currently, she doesn't feel that her TV past needs to be 'a conversation' when her children grow older, revealing she has a 'very open and honest' relationship with her family. In February, Marnie opened up about how she plans to talk to her children about her career on the X-rated social media platform, OnlyFans. The beauty is expecting her third child with husband Casey Johnson. The couple already share two sons, Rox, five, and Oax, two. She told new magazine: 'All I'm trying to do is create an amazing life for my family and myself. I've raised my children to be good people, not to judge, and to always be supportive. 'I don't think it'll even need to be a discussion - they know me inside out. Plus, I did much worse on Geordie Shore!' When asked about the type of content she shares on the adult platform, the reality star clarified: 'I'm not classed as an explicit account - it's more applied nudity.' It comes after Marnie announced her pregnancy with a black-and-white video featuring her ultrasound and touching moments of her children cradling her bump. Fans were shocked by the news, as Marnie had previously insisted she wouldn't have a third child due to her past difficult pregnancies. When pregnant with her second child, she stated: 'I would not go to three. I think you've got to find the balance for yourselves. 'We want to enjoy our lives as well. We've not waited too long to have kids and I feel like having two, we can give them the best life possible.' Casey and Marnie first became an item in June 2017 after they appeared on the reality show, Single AF together. The couple tied the knot in 2023.
